Default Top Trios in the NBA 2007-2008

Interesting chart which followed teams and their top three players who led their team in wins produced. Bosh, Jose & Moon (yes Jamario) were rated as number #10 of the 30 teams. Take a look at the chart for yourself.

This means that the top three players on a 15 man roster tend to be the driving force behind a teamís success.

Last summer I posted a list of the top trios - defined as the three leaders on each team in Wins Produced - for each team in 2006-07. The list - re-posted below - revealed that the top trios were in Phoenix, San Antonio, Chicago, Dallas, and New Jersey.

As noted, Top Trios has been defined in terms of Wins Produced. What if we focused instead on WP48 [Wins Produced per 48 minutes] of the top trio [calculated by adding the Wins Produced of the top three together, dividing by minutes played, and multiplying by 48]?

Focusing on WP48 reveals that Phoenix - with Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, and Shawn Marion - led the way last season (as it did in 2006-07). Unfortunately the trade for Shaq, who posted a 0.227 WP48 with the Suns last year (Marionís mark was 0.306), probably means Phoenix will not top the trio rankings next season (the new Suns trio, though, might still rank in the top five).

If Phoenix fades from the top spot, though, who is likely to take their place? To find candidates to lead the WP48 Trio Rankings for 2008-09 we first should look at the other top five threesomes this past season. And that list includes the trios in San Antonio, the LA Lakers, Boston, and New Orleans. If I had to guess, I would suspect the Lakers Trio of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol (or Lamar Odom), and Andrew Bynum will lead the way in 2008-09. Of course we should remember that my last attempt to predict this contest failed.

The trios are calculated based on the combinations that produce the most wins added, which is why there's weird names in there.

In my opinion it's a little dubious given a guy who plays efficiently in somewhat limited minutes, like Moon, can outproduce a guy who realistically adds more value to a team, but does so less efficiently in more minutes.

Effciency (ie, low turnovers, high FG%, etc) is great, but you can't fill a team with guys shooting 5 or 6 times a game.

Nick Collison and them are nice, but they aren't actually more valuable to the Sonics than Kevin Durant is. Ditto Chuck Hayes vs. Tracy McGrady.

Here's one for y'all.

How long before our obvious Ego starved Star Bosh get's pissy if Oneal starts playing the way he can????

Honestly, you're talking Bosh numbers, but with an actual MANS presense inside.

Who's team would it be then????

And stuff the shit Oneal said about it being Bosh's team. What if he takes over?

I would argue O Neal isn't capable of taking over from Bosh at this point. I just don't think his game is at the level Bosh's is at.

Even if he did though, I don't think we have any evidence that Bosh wouldn't welcome that.

It would still be Bosh's team. He knows the organization is committed to him long term, and he remains a more valuable piece down the road than O Neal because of his youth.

It's not like he's gonna drop his numbers significantly anyway. If anything, you're looking at a Garnett/Pierce style drop down to around 20 ppg, and that's simply a result of another player on the team being able to carry a load offensively. If that's the price you pay for a 50 win season, I think Bosh would be fine with it.

If they're losing and Chris is seeing a decline in his numbers and touches, then that's a different story. But then I would wonder why he's seeing the ball less, and could hardly blame him if he were getting upset.

I don't think you quite get the new culture in Toronto. The team was never about simply passing the ball to Chris and letting him jack it up 20-30 times a game in the first place. Bosh will still get his and Jermaine will pick up the offensive slack left by TJ and take a little from other guys. The problem with this team has been that they've needed another strong leader. Jermaine can only help Bosh, not hurt him. Not to mention Bosh has never shown signs of having an ego. He's been the opposite, selfless.
