O'Neal quite happy to be north of the border

Quote:
Yesterday, O'Neal and Chris Bosh, the all-star Olympic gold medallist, walked together with a purpose: "The best friends got to get their picture taken," said Bosh.
Spotlight squarely on Raptors' Bargnani

Quote:
"We do have a streamlined team, so there's not many places to turn to," said Toronto president and general manager Bryan Colangelo yesterday.

"So Andrea is going to have to do it, and do it quick, and be with this team at the speed of the team. I think you're going to see some very positive things."

Big expectations

Quote:
From his trademark headband (exchanged for Raptors red after years of Indiana Pacers gold) to his slimmed-down frame (thanks to eight weeks without sugar and dairy) to his healed left knee, O'Neal looked quite at ease in his new surroundings yesterday.

"This is a nice group and I've been with some good teams and some good players," O'Neal said. "We know what (the media) and the city expects of the Raptors. We have to develop that swagger, to believe we are the better team. I know this is a hockey town, but we'd like to make it a Maple Leafs and Raptors town."

O'Neal ready to take his lumps

Quote:
"My financial adviser was saying, yeah, you're just getting killed in taxes," said O'Neal, a six-time NBA all-star acquired by the Raptors from the Indiana Pacers in an off-season trade after a chaotic, injury-plagued finish to his eight-year run with the Pacers.

"And I was like, look, I've made a lot of money over my 12 years in the NBA, and I've made a lot of money the last few years in Indiana. But I did not think about money one time when I was miserable."

Raptors to build team on defence, board work

Quote:
"I've blocked like 40 shots in like three days," O'Neal said of his performance in unofficial team workouts over the past week. "Playing with me first hand and working out, that's one thing (teammates have) talked about a lot. I like to block shots, I like to take charges and I'm going to cover a lot of area in a quick amount of time."

"Even on help side, it's unbelievable what he can do," Bosh said of his battles against O'Neal's Pacer teams. "I beat my man a couple of times, and then I had to beat him, too.

"And that's hard, to beat one guy and then to beat another. That's tough."

Raptor Jawai held out of practice because of heart irregularity

Quote:
Forward Nathan Jawai will be held out of practice for the short-term as a pre-season cardiac screening raised some concerns for the club. More details were not immediately available. The team did say further testing would be done later in the week, at which point Jawai will be re-evaluated. He will not practise until then, with the club kicking off official work-outs Tuesday in Ottawa.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. As the season rolls closer, the more news they'll be.
