Kapono Struggling to find an Opportunity

Quote:
There was talk that having T.J. Ford back at the point would be a boon to Kapono's game, because with Ford out 31 games this season, the Raptors' bench players weren't getting the quality passes and open looks that they might have been with a bonafide, well-rested point guard running the offence. But Ford has been back for the past six games and Kapono still hasn't broken out.

Head coach Sam Mitchell said that he needs his key bench players -- Kapono, Carlos Delfino, Rasho Nesterovic -- to play well in order for his club, which has lost two straight heading into tonight's contest in Orlando against the Magic, to have any chance of moving up in the Eastern Conference standings or getting past the first round in the playoffs.

Why the Treys haven't been Falling

Quote:
Why? His long-bomb silence amounts to the flipside of the club's rebounding woes. Not only can opponents do damage on the offensive glass when the Raptors fail to rebound; the Raptors can't run if they can't corral the ball. And it's in the transition game, after all, where defences scramble, assignments are missed and Kapono can theoretically find openings behind the arc. It was certainly so last season in Miami.

"When Jason played in Miami, he had Shaq and (Udonis) Haslem rebounding the basketball," said Sam Mitchell, the Toronto coach. "Jason was out (running). They kicked the ball ahead, got a shot."...

"Now (Kapono) has got to go to the glass. Everybody's got to (freaking) go," Mitchell said. "There's no transition game any more."

The Raptors are Losing their Lunch Money

Quote:
This time a week from now, the Raptors will have left the friendly Eastern Conference behind for a nasty five-game trip in the West, where they'll be viewed as fresh meat in one of the most ruthless playoff buildups in NBA history.

The way they're going, their lunch money will be gone and their dignity, too. And there will be no safe side of the street to run to.

Reality can bite.

Rebounding a Nightmare for Raptors

Quote:
The Raptors watched film on all of those games, yet rebounding continues to confound them. At some point, it has to be considered a fundamental flaw of this team, not something with a workable solution.

"Rebounding and setting good picks are two things we don't do that well as a basketball team," Mitchell said bluntly.

On the surface, Toronto's rebounding inadequacy only affects one side of the ledger. Offensive rebounds often lead to easy baskets, which is how Charlotte shot 43% on Sunday, as opposed to a percentage in the mid-30s. Aside from allowing slashing swingmen to explode every third game or so, the problem is clearly not with Toronto's initial defence.

In addition to inflating the opposition's tally, however, the Raptors' rebounding woes serve as a drain on Toronto's output.

When their opponents start to dominate on the glass, each of Toronto's players, including the guards, start to go to their own basket with more verve to help stem the tide.
Yao undergoes successful foot surgery

Quote:
"I am very relieved that everything went well with my surgery," said Yao. "I am looking forward to getting better and starting my physical rehab as soon as the doctors say I can.

"If I cannot play in the Olympics for my country, that would be the biggest blow of my career. I don't want to know how disappointed the people in China would be

i dont think you all are being entirely fair. i tend to agree that the photographers are god aweful, in terms of lighting their subjects. but lets not forget that there's the make-up and hairstylist to blame as well. plus her outfit blows. its hard to tell who's underneath all of that..

Why can't the Raptors find a way to free up their flamethrower in the halfcourt offence? That question brings up another weakness.

"We're running plays for him, but then you've got to get good picks. ... You've got to have somebody head-hunt his guy and get him open," Mitchell said. "Rebounding and setting good picks, two things we don't do well as a basketball team."

Heh.

I been saying this for a while now.

And all ya hear in response is "MITCHELL SUCKS".

It's true though, Kapono ain't hitting cuz he's ain't getting open.

It's not all his fault, but it isn't the coaches fault.
