With Wicked West Behind Schedule Eases for Raps

Quote:
Having seen their game go south during their trip to the NBA's wildly competitive West, the Raptors have nowhere to go but up.

At least that's the hope in these troubling times in Raptorland.

Despite their 0-5 trip and despite losing eight of their past 10 games heading into tonight's home tip against the undermanned Miami Heat, the Raptors don't appear in any danger of missing the post-season.

The Raptors' remaining 15-game schedule is somewhat favourable, given nine will be played at the Air Canada Centre, including two against the wretched Heat.

The only time the Raptors will be forced to play in a different time zone will be the season finale on April 16 against the Chicago Bulls.
Rockets Crash Down to Earth

Quote:
The shots stopped falling, Boston's stars took over and just like that, the Houston Rockets' 22-game winning streak was history.

Kevin Garnett scored 22 points and Paul Pierce added 20 as the Celtics beat the Rockets 94-74 last night, stopping Houston's remarkable victory run.

The Rockets hadn't lost since a 97-89 defeat to Utah on Jan. 27 and put together the NBA's second-longest winning streak. It ended 11 victories shy of the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, who won 33 in a row.
Out of Control Ford

Quote:
Eight days and five losses leave a lot to ponder, but nothing more so than how to get T.J. Ford back to being T.J. Ford.

In the aftermath of his fourth-quarter meltdown and subsequent ejection in Monday's 96-79 loss to Utah, Ford said all the right things in owning up to letting his emotions get the better of him.

But the circumstances leading up to that costly tantrum weren't limited to last night's game.

The consecutive fouls called by Marc Davis were the last straw for a disgruntled veteran who is having a tough time coming to grips with his new role with the Raptors.

Head coach Sam Mitchell summed it up nicely: "He's making a lot of adjustments and it's difficult when you've never had to adjust to this role. It's an adjustment for our team, too," Mitchell said.

Bosh's Return a Huge Boost

Quote:
Chris Bosh smiled when asked if he'd make his return to the Raptor lineup tonight, the smile of a guy who can't wait to get back doing what he does best and loves most.

"If nothing crazy happens . . . I'm going to suit up," he said with a glint in his eye.

Crazy? This team? You never know. With the way things are going, you'd half expect to get reports that Bosh tripped down the stairs of the charter aircraft, wiping out Rasho Nesterovic and Jose Calderon, and all three would be sidelined for the final 15 games of the regular season.

Bosh Announces Return

Quote:
"I've been working out for the past couple of days getting back in shape and my knee has responded pretty well," he said. "I'm really excited because I've been waiting for a while now, watching on the bench every game. I'm finally back now!"
We've all been Frustrated by this Trip

Quote:
Mitchell said that, considering Bosh's absence, he felt his team played well in four of the five games on the trip, the exception being a blowout loss at the Denver Nuggets last Friday. The quality of competition (the Utah Jazz, Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers) was certainly high, and, realistically, winning those games without Bosh would have qualified as huge upsets.
Celtics Bring Rockets Down to Earth

Quote:
The shots stopped falling, Boston's stars took over and just like that, the Houston Rockets' 22-game winning streak was history.

Kevin Garnett scored 22 points and Paul Pierce added 20 as the Celtics beat the Rockets 94-74 on Tuesday night, stopping Houston's remarkable victory run.

The Rockets hadn't lost since a 97-89 defeat to Utah on Jan. 27 and put together the NBA's second-longest winning streak. It ended 11 victories shy of the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, who won 33 in a row.
Bynum Should Return for Playoffs

Quote:
The Lakers have finally put a timetable on the return of Andrew Bynum: probably the first round of the playoffs.

Bynum has been out since Jan. 13, when he dislocated his left kneecap and bruised a bone landing on a teammate's foot while going for a rebound. The Lakers haven't been more specific about his recovery than saying he would be out for at least eight weeks.
Wolves Owner say Garnett Tanked

Quote:
Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, a staunch supporter and friend of Garnett's during their 12 seasons together in Minnesota, leveled some rare criticism at his former star on Tuesday, suggesting Garnett "tanked it" when he missed the last five games last year.

Taylor's remarks came after practice, as the Wolves' strong play down the stretch was being discussed. They have won four of their last six games and say they want to win as many as possible to create some momentum going into the offseason.
Garbo Caught in Crossfire

Quote:
oronto Raptors forward Jorge Garbajosa is stuck between warring factions like a child whose parents are going through a messy separation.

And like that child, he is powerless to fix the matter.

The dispute between Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the Raptors' parent company, and the Spanish Basketball Federation took another turn yesterday when a Toronto newspaper reported the NBA team's lawsuit against the federation could be worth more than $14-million.

"It's not a good situation but there's nothing I can do," Garbajosa said last night before Toronto's game against the Utah Jazz. "It is a decision that the Raptors took and we'll see what happens. I just wish they find an agreement as soon as possible between both of them.
Kapono Exhibits all around game

Quote:
Jason Kapono will never be known for his defence and rebounding.

The Toronto Raptors' small forward is a shooter, maybe the best shooter in the world, and his career 46.4 percentage behind the three-point line is the best in NBA history.

But Raptors head coach Sam Mitchell says it has been defence and rebounding that have kept the Californian on the floor over the last fortnight when his shooting stroke had left him.

That missing stroke re-emerged Sunday night in Sacramento, when Kapono put on an exhibition and led the Raptors with 26 points in a 106-100 loss. He made 12 of 19 shots, including two of six from three-point territory, and finished three points off his season high.

Ford is Lost, and Raptors are Feeling it

Quote:
t was the grand finale of T.J.'s badly reviewed travelling show, in which he responded to - and confirmed - his backup status by playing like a one-man band, complete with cymbal crashes. Ford's season was derailed by injuries, and a period of adjustment was expected. But right now Ford is lost, and he's screwing the entire team up. And a season that was already vaguely disappointing has taken a sharp turn for the worse.
Raptors Schedule is favourable in race for fifth

Quote:
A few weeks ago, the Toronto Raptors were in a battle for home-court advantage in the first round of the NBA playoffs with the Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers. But after losing nine of their last 11 games, the Raptors now find themselves in a different battle: the one to hold on to fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Going into Wednesday's play, the Raptors have a half-game lead on sixth-place Washington and a one-game cushion on seventh-place Philadelphia. The real concern is staying out of the seventh spot. The team that winds up in that position will likely draw the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs and be looking at the strong possibility of an early exit.

Again.... what is up with these Sun photographers? Can't they afford real backdrops? I mean, I'm all for recycling, but using old wrapping paper is the epitome of ghetto.
