Post Today in Raptorland - 2/5/08

Better late than never. Sorry for being late with the daily news fellas. Was in court this morning.

Raps scorch the Heat

Quote:
"As a team it's hard for us to play much better than we did (last night)," Raps head coach Sam Mitchell said. "Our defence was good, we rebounded the ball for the most part. We moved the ball. We made shots but we got great looks. We will be hard pressed to play much better than we did (last night)." Mitchell didn't care that the opponent was an undermanned Miami Heat squad.
Quote:
Too quick, too efficient, too ready: That was Toronto in the first quarter," Riley said. "It was just an absolute basketball clinic. They had us back on our heals before we even knew what was going on. It was just right from the get-go. It was a very, very impressive performance on their part."
Aussie Shaq

Quote:
Nathan Jawai is a 6-foot-10, 270 pound centre who is eligible for this year's NBA draft. With the Australian league schedule winding down the Raptors sent Jim Kelly, their director of player personnel, over to Australia to see him recently.
Ford makes early return

Quote:
Ford's return to the court was delayed a little as Jose Calderon felt it was necessary to mark the moment with a little more than a slap of hands.

He stopped Ford on his way out and embraced him, catching the Raptors' returning point guard off-guard a little.

"My mind was probably floating," Ford said. "I didn't recognize the hug, but we respect one another, we care about one another and we support one another. We've never made it about one of us (over the other)."

Ford flashes ol' form

Quote:
"I did not anticipate playing on this trip. The purpose was to be around the team, get a couple of practices underneath my belt, but I wasn't quite sure how things were going to go," said Ford.

"I think the performance speaks for itself."

On his first possession, Ford ran the offence patiently and, setting a foot into the paint, found the back-cutting Jason Kapono with a heady bounce pass that led to a layup.
Clinging to tradition

Quote:
For the Raptors, most of the time each morning is spent re-affirming what they want to do consistently on defence rather than making wholesale changes to react to what that night's opponent might do. There is some "tweaking" of defensive principles, Mitchell said, depending on the personnel they'll face, but the basics remain the same.

"You've got your ways that you play things, like screen and rolls (and) are you going to trap on the post," said Mitchell. "We practice our defensive principles, we don't practice against other teams' plays because if three guys remember the play and the other two don't, what good is that?
Ford's biggest hurdle was all mental

Quote:
I would look at that court and I would think, even though I could retire if I wanted to, I still would play basketball," said Ford. "I'm at the same risk playing in my backyard that I am playing on this court, I feel. So that helped me understand it.

"I'm still young. It doesn't make sense to quit something I've worked so hard at to get to this level. To come back down and play at somebody else's level?"

Raptors romp in Ford's return

Quote:
"Glad to have him back," he said. "Back like old times. I knew he was down in Houston working hard though, that was the whole purpose of the trip."

Sophomore centre Andrea Bargnani came up with another good game, scoring 22 points, while Anthony Parker added 18 for the Raptors.

Former Heat forward Jason Kapono scored 13 as his former team lost for the 19th time in the past 20 games to fall to 9-37. The Raptors are 26-21.

Ford returns, Raptors blow out Heat

Quote:
With the Raptors up by 27 points heading into the final frame, Ford was able to get a solid block of minutes in with his teammates. In all, he wound up with four assists and just one turnover in 17 minutes.

"It felt good. I think my overall play felt good," Ford told Raptors NBA TV after the game. "I was excited. I was able to create for guys and guys were able to get shots."

Heat hits rock bottom with 'terrible' defeat

Quote:
Asked what it means that Miami, which is now 9-37 overall and has lost 19 of its last 20 games, has three 30-point losses among its past 10 games, Wade said, "it's bad basketball, terrible basketball."

Then he spoke haunting words.

"Maybe it's getting away," he said of the season. "At first we were coming down to the fourth quarter and losing ballgames, now we're losing by 30 and the game is over early in the third quarter."

Wade said he's at wit's end.

"I'm trying," Wade said. "I've said all I can say, done what I can do, tried to talk to guys. There's only so much I can do. I don't have the answers."

Heat's loss is another wipeout

Quote:
AmericanAirlines Arena was as empty as it has been in years. Despite the team listing another sellout at 19,600, half that figure would be closer to the truth when it came to actual attendance.

"Am I happy?" Arison asked rhetorically about the crowd that featured vast stretches of empty sections. "We've been here before."

Said Wade, "It's very quiet. You hear the boos.

"You hear the things they're saying."

Speeding ticket from a year and a half ago.

I've been postponing it for over a year now hoping that the OPP officer would been transferred elswhere by now, meaning that he wouldn't show up and my offence would be dismissed. Well, he's still in Perth and the judge owned me today.

Anyhow, wasn't that bad. It was only a $62 dollar ticket, but I don't believe in paying for tickets without at least a fight. I've been to court for parking tickets about 3 or 4 times and won every time. Had another traffic violation last fall when I turned right during a time when your not suppose too. Contested that in court and it was dismissed because the cop was a no show.

I was hoping for a similiar outcome this morning, but in turn I lost for the first time.

Perth, Ontario .... not Perth, Australia.

It's only a 30 minutes drive from Almonte so its not bad at all. But that's were the county courts are for out here in the sticks.

Nope ... hop, skip and a jump for me. If I was wealthy and didn't mind driving 30 extra minutes daily to work I'd buy a house in Perth in a flash. Gorgeous town.
