Today In Raptorland - 2/3/09

Raptors' all-star Bosh denies getaway plans

With an emphatic "No. No. No, I have not told him that," Bosh shot down an ESPN report that he informed Colangelo that he'd leave as a free agent in 2010 and said the only conversations with his boss have been about trying to make things better now.

"Me and Bryan talk about how to improve this team and what we can do to get better as far as personnel-wise, pushing the guys, practising better and what I can do to get better," said Bosh.

Bosh target of more rumours

Colangelo was understandably curious about this given no such conversation has taken place, a fact confirmed by Bosh yesterday. So Colangelo e-mailed Smith about his so-called information yesterday.

The only response he got was that Smith was sick with the flu and unable to respond to any e-mails.

While the average basketball fan can laugh off nonsense like this, Colangelo was not laughing yesterday.

You can see his tolerance for such rumour-mongering has long since reached its peak. In a post-practice talk, Colangelo was, at times, resigned to the fact that such misinformation was part of the business of running a professional sports franchise while at other times angered that this was in fact the case.

"Unfortunately, I guess there is an obligation to answer the question," Colangelo said. "There is no truth to the rumour or speculation that (Bosh) said anything to any of us in the organization, that he is going to be leaving. There is no truth to the fact that he is on the trading block or being shopped in any regard. It already has created a flood of phone calls from the media this morning and maybe even one or two teams that would probably be interested in doing something if I were to throw that out there.

"The point is this is just another example of information that is out there that is just not true. It's unfortunate. It's part of the business we deal with and there just doesn't seem to be a lot of accountability with respect to the topic sometimes and that's why we're here today talking about it."

Triano cracks whip

We haven't had practices the way I wanted to because of injuries, because guys needed a rest," Triano said. "We had a really good practice today. I said to heck with who is tired. We need to bust through this. We need to have an energy practice because we don't practise energy. So I'm going to take responsibility if they didn't have the energy they needed. We'll find out."

While practice is not open to the media, those present said there was much more contact, much more physicality than in recent practices.

Battling the best

LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers are bookend nightmares who slash and drive and rise and dunk.

They are co-favourites for the NBA's most valuable player award and good bets to meet in the league final. And beginning tonight in Cleveland, the struggling Toronto Raptors become the first NBA team this season to try to contain the duo no, they can't be stopped on consecutive nights.

Good luck.

Raptors' 'best' not good enough

Chris Bosh, angry at himself for fumbling a routine pass, walked out of a second-quarter timeout stone-faced as could be.

Bosh sprinkled talcum powder onto the courtside scoring table, as is his habit. And instead of rubbing his hands in the sticky stuff, the Toronto Raptors star simply slammed the table, open-handed, as hard as he could. The impact briefly disconnected the feed of a courtside television, and it left half a palm print that lingered well after Toronto's 113-90 loss to the Orlando Magic on Sunday.

The loss by itself seems unlikely to linger. There is no shame in losing to Orlando, drilled Cleveland in much the same way Thursday night. It is the method of losing that's more likely to stick with the Raptors. Toronto lost to Milwaukee Friday night in the same dispiriting fashion: a decent first half, a multiplying series of mistakes, and a team-wide flattening. Emotion, spirit, competitiveness; it bleeds too easily from this team.
