Today in Raptorland - 11/6/08
Lost in transition
Quote:
A bid for a franchise-best fourth consecutive victory to open the season clanked when Jermaine O'Neal could not match the second-half pace set by Chris Bosh and Jose Calderon. And, for the first time, no other starter or bench player picked up the flag, as Toronto fell 100-93 to the Allen Iverson-less Detroit Pistons in a clash of undefeateds last night at the Air Canada Centre.

Mitchell's friendly foe
Quote:
Coach Sam Mitchell said he was taking no greater interest in the fortunes of new Pistons' coach Michael Curry than any other NBA colleague, even though his friendship with the one-time Raptor stretches back 10 years to their role in helping end the 1999 lockout.
"He'll do well, but he didn't need me to hold his hand the past four years (as an assistant) and he doesn't need it now," Mitchell said.

Referee Scott Foster broke his silence yesterday, discussing his role in the NBA's betting scandal and his relationship with former official Tim Donaghy in published interviews.

Pistons too hot to handle for Raptors
Quote:
Running off screens and getting open looks like they've done countless times before, Prince had 27 points and Hamilton added 22 in Detroit's 100-93 win at the Air Canada Centre last night.
"Rip and Tayshaun just kicked our butts," said Toronto coach Sam Mitchell.

'Basketball guy' Obama a winner in Raptorland
Quote:
Obama, 47, who found refuge on the blacktop as a young man and was said to engage in his usual good-luck pickup game in the hours before the election returns rolled in on Tuesday, has mused about building a Pennsylvania Avenue court suitable for 5-on-5.
Said Rasheed Wallace, the Pistons forward: "That's heaven-sent! ... You wouldn't see (72-year-old) John McCain out there shooting jump shots."

Amare amazes Pacers

Stoudemire was 17-for-21 from the field, made 15 free throws without a miss and had 11 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Short-handed Pistons make short work of Raptors
Quote:
But while the Raptors have visions of challenging for an elite spot in the East by relying on a short rotation - forward Chris Bosh was on the floor for 44 minutes, his third consecutive game in that range - the Pistons proved that even short-handed they have more tools to work with, ranging from veteran wings Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton, to an energetic bench that goes five deep.

Pistons end Raptors' early perfection
Quote:
"I'm still having a hard time getting comfortable in the offence," O'Neal said after making just three of 10 shots for eight points. "I haven't really been able to find a rhythm at all outside of the first game.
"Coming from a situation [in Indiana] where you got a lot of shots, to a situation where you want the best shot ... I'm just struggling. And we've been able to win games without me scoring. And then a night like tonight, where the team needed some baskets late in the game, and I wasn't able to do it.
"I'm a little upset about it."

Unusual lineups spark Pistons
Quote:
"That's a really good team over there (Raptors), and we wanted to keep the ball in the hands of (Jose) Calderon and (Chris) Bosh and not let everybody else beat us," Curry said.
Bosh had 26 points (hitting 11 of 24 shots) and Calderon had 24. But the Pistons shut down everybody else. The Raptors made just six 3-pointers. Jason Kapono and Anthony Parker were a combined 3 for 15 from beyond the arc.
