Mitchell defends strategy

Quote:
Mitchell was asked point blank how many games he thought he would win with Bosh scoring just one basket in the second half.

"If they keep putting two people on Chris, other guys have to score," Mitchell said. "The difference in the game was we didn't make shots."
A little too unselfish

Quote:
Monday's loss in Boston had a number of positives, but the biggest negative from head coach Sam Mitchell's standpoint was the Raptors' inability to take shots when they presented themselves.

Raptors wary of bad defensive habits

Quote:
"We made some mistakes that had nothing to do with Jason (Kapono, the primary defender on Pierce), where we were supposed to do other things that guys didn't do," said Mitchell. "Like on the layup (a Pierce drive that put the Celts up six in the final minute); I'm not going to say who it was, because I don't believe in doing that. That's something we talk to our players about."
Mitchell's blinding love of Garnett proves costly

Quote:
Mitchell's love is unequivocal and real. But Mitchell's reverence for Garnett reached ridiculous proportions in Monday night's 94-87 loss in Boston. Apparently convinced that Garnett, the league's reigning defensive player of the year, was unassailable even by Toronto's best player, Mitchell sketched out a scheme that saw Chris Bosh, who came into the game averaging a team-high 26.6 points, take zero shots in the fourth quarter and one shot in an entire second half in which the Celtics, in a comeback onslaught, outscored the Raptors 58-39.

You don't need to be an NBA guru to know that if you allow your opponent to take away your top weapon without even attempting to counter the strategy, you're tying your best shooting hand behind your back.
Quote:
"None of y'all had anything to say when we were up 16 in the second quarter," said Mitchell. "I'm not going to talk about why I do what I do, because I have my reasons for doing it. ... Other guys gotta make plays. ... Last time I checked, is Chris the only guy on the team that gets a cheque? Does nobody else get paid?"

Raptors return from Boston with more questions than answers

Quote:
As for his observer-type role in the fourth quarter against Boston, Bosh said he will try to be more assertive next time.

"It goes back to what I've been saying all along, I have to do a better job of imposing my will," he said. "No matter what the defence is doing I have to get to the ball and get to where I'm most effective on the court."

Raptors notebook: Mitchell commends Kapono's defence on Pierce

Quote:
Most of Pierce's offence came off difficult shots. There was a series of turn-around jumpers, and a couple of three-pointers in transition.

"Jason contested every shot," Mitchell said. "Great players make tough shots sometimes."
Quote:
When Kevin Garnett was taunting Jose Calderon late in the third quarter,...
Quote:
"It was nothing," Calderon said. "I was on the basketball court. It happens sometimes. It was nice. We talked after the game. It was great. Nothing at all, not a big deal.

"He's trying to get his team involved, and the fans and me, too, with my team."
Raptors Game Day

Quote:
Who's hot? Jermaine O'Neal is coming off his best game as a Raptor, a 23-point, 11-rebound night against the Celtics.

Who's not? Jose Calderon shot just 10-for-29 (34%) from the floor during the Raptors' road trip.

FOUR Raptors ON BALLOT FOR THIS SEASON'S NBA ALL-STAR GAME

Quote:
Joining Bosh are six-time all-star centre Jermaine O'Neal and guards Jose Calderon and Anthony Parker. The game will be held in Phoenix on Feb. 15.
