Bosh and Mitchell poles apart

"We did some good things but, all in all, some of the bad defensive things outweigh a lot of our good things," O'Neal said. "Defensively is where we looked pretty bad. We gave up a lot of dribble penetration, we let some of the guys in the low post catch the ball where they wanted to catch it.

"We have to be a tough, physical team if we want to be a better defensive team this year. Obviously, there's going to be nights where we don't shoot the ball well."

Graham or Moon? No small decision

"Joey is probably a little bit more aggressive scoring than Jamario, but then Jamario does other things defensively," Mitchell said.

"I'm just trying to figure out what I need. If I feel like I need a little more scoring from that second group than I will probably play Joey with that group."
Raptors focus on defence

Perhaps because it is a part of his game that comes so naturally, O'Neal seemed most taken aback by the Raptors' inability, or is it unwillingness, to physically deny the opposition its chosen path.

"We've got to be a tough, physical team if we want to be a better defensive team this year," O'Neal said. "It would be nice if we shot the ball well every night, but we have to give ourselves a chance defensively to stay in the game when we are not shooting the ball particularly well on a given night.

Raptors questions still linger

"I play the most physical position in basketball," O'Neal said as he brushed off the logical question about the condition of his leg. "I'm going to get a little sore, my hamstring is going to get a little tight. I don't want to have to answer questions about it every single night. I don't want the people, especially the fans, to be on pins and needles all the time."

Raptors Bosh ready and rarin' to go

For the first time this season, it appears Ukic has nudged ahead in the battle to be the primary backup point guard. It is not so much that he earned the spot, although he has turned the ball over less than Solomon did in his time. Instead, Solomon has a sore hamstring that caused him to miss the game in Edmonton. His involvement in practice yesterday was limited.

"Right now, Roko gets those minutes," Mitchell said. "You can't give minutes to a guy who hasn't been practising

Speights might start against Raptors

This might not have been the original plan, but, more and more, it seems rookie Marreese Speights might crack the 76ers' rotation right from the start.

Coach Maurice Cheeks wouldn't commit to anything specific yesterday, except to say, as he has several times previously, that Speights "has been very good."

Cheeks reiterated he would spend several days finalizing a substitution and rotation plan and would have it in place by Wednesday night's NBA season opener against the Toronto Raptors in the Wachovia Center.
