Raptors have plenty of time for fine-tuning

In theory, it's a wonderful idea and there were times in the eight pre-season games when Bosh and Jermaine O'Neal were able to force guards to backpedal coming off high screens, which did slow down the offence.

But there were far too many occasions when the big men particularly Andrea Bargnani, who isn't as quick or experienced as either Bosh or O'Neal was slow to trap, allowing the guard with the ball to slip between his man and the Raptor big man, giving the opponent an unimpeded pathway to the paint.

"It's something we have to work on," Bosh admitted. "We have to be connected to the bigs a little bit. Sometimes when you jump out a little bit too early and you jump the wrong way, the guard can split you.

"You have to come right off his back and when you do that, the guard has nowhere to go. It's just repetition and timing."
NBA to use more video replay

The NBA's board of governors has approved the expanded use of instant replay for this season.

Referees will be allowed to review video to determine if a field goal was a two- or three-point attempt, or to decide if a shooting foul was committed behind the arc and warrants three shots instead of two.

At their meeting yesterday, owners also approved the use of replay if the game clock malfunctions in the final seconds of a quarter of overtime, helping the officials better determine how much time should have come off the clock or if the period should have ended. Now, refs must make that determination without video.

Europe bound

The NBA may soon take regular-season games to Europe, and David Stern isn't concerned his best players might decide to stay there.

Although Stern said logistics would make an all-star game in Europe difficult -- he said players have asked him about staging one -- fans there might not have to settle for exhibitions much longer.

"To the extent that we're asked the question, what about a regular-season game, we decided: 'OK, with the lead-up to the Olympics, we'll pop a regular-season game or two or more, I don't know exactly how many, over there by the 2012 Olympics,' " the commissioner said yesterday during his annual pre-season conference call.

London will host those games.

The NBA Board of Governors voted to allow the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas to accept bets on league games even though the Maloof family owns both the casino and the Sacramento Kings, owner George Maloof Jr. said yesterday.

Maloof told The Associated Press the unanimous vote means that for the first time the Palms will be allowed to take wagers on all NBA teams, except the Kings.
