Raps' backups need to step up a bunch

Quote:
As drop-offs go, it has often looked like Niagara Falls. Jason Kapono, the Raptors' off-the-bench sharpshooter, was shaking his head at the state of the second-stringers yesterday.

"It's like, `Oh my God, dude, why are we always faced with four seconds on the shot clock, being forced to take a bad shot?'" said Kapono. "We've been, uh, slow to gel."
Raptors prove to be a work in progress in loss to Nuggets

Quote:
That was at least partly because Jermaine O'Neal, the Raptors centre, played just 13 minutes before leaving the game with what the team described as tightness in his right hamstring. O'Neal said he'd be "ready to rock and roll" when practice resumes Friday.

O'Neal's leg a concern

Quote:
"The Jamario of last year isn't good enough for this year," Mitchell declared. "The light will come on ... he will come and seek me out."

But the coach also hinted his patience had limits.

"If you're not going to apply (what's being taught), we'll get people who will. But it's coming for him."

Raptors close out pre-season with loss to Nuggets

Quote:
Prior to the game, Raptors coach Sam Mitchell talked at length about the importance of taking advantage of his team's last game that didn't count toward anything. He wanted to see aggression and smart plays out of his team. Instead, he got an extended game of catch-up out of his roster of 11 players.

Melo big hit with Canadian crowd

Quote:
They unleashed a shower of boos midway through the opening session when Anthony stole the ball at midcourt but elected to stuff the ball softly through the hoop at the end of his breakaway instead of treating the spectators to a showtime jam.

Anthony made amends for that at the end of the first half when he took an inbound pass with 8.9 seconds to go and calmly dribbled upcourt before penetrating and dishing to Nene, who brought the house to its feet with a thunderous dunk over Jamario Moon as the last second ticked off.
"I guess they figured we had come too far for me to be just laying it up like that," Anthony said good-naturedly. "But I told the fans, I told them I made up for it. I gave them something to cheer about."

It's the little things that keep me going.
