Bench booster

Quote:
Centre/forward Andrea Bargnani will get the same assignment against Howard he did Friday against Yao.

"(Howard) is a big guy playing in the low post and he has a job to do, so do your work early," Triano said of Bargnani and Jake Voskuhl. "Andrea will have to get back and help out on the screen quicker, but I think Andrea has played well since our Christmas break."
Three's a crowd

Quote:
The Raptors are bracing for a barrage of bombs today by the Orlando Magic, one of the NBA's most active three-point advocates, sinking more than 300 already this season.

"It will be a bit different than Friday's (win over Houston), but we have to stay with our (defensive) principles as much as we can," Toronto coach Jay Triano said. "They're a good team that shoots far more three-pointers than anyone else. We're not only going to have to protect against (Dwight Howard) inside, but we have to get out to their three-point shooters, no matter what, make sure they're more contested and that they don't get wide-open looks."

Raptors reserves target 'Superman'

Quote:
Voskuhl is more than a 6-foot-11 body off the bench; today he represents six fouls to expend on Howard. And he understands his role well. Though he has played a total of 47 minutes since being acquired last month less than a regulation 48-minute game he has registered 14 fouls for the Raptors. He picked up four against Yao in a mere 18 minutes on Friday. If the fouls are delivered with the requisite force and purpose and Voskuhl's usually are they serve to wear down an opponent, which might have at least partly explained Yao's two points in Friday's second half.

"It's like a wrestling match," said Voskuhl. "You have to push back, but not push too hard. It's not a who's-the-strongest-guy-on-the-court contest."

Orlando Magic look to extend domination of Toronto Raptors

Quote:
The Magic continued to amaze at home and earned their 10th straight win over division rival Miami, 86-76 on Friday night. They will put a nine-game win streak at Amway Arena on hold as they try to extend their recent ownership of Toronto. F Rashard Lewis continues to shoot well from the 3-point line (41 percent) and his 19.6 points per game average is just ahead of C Dwight Howard's 19.5 ppg.
Orlando Magic try to avoid letdowns against 20-loss teams as halfway point approaches

Quote:
On the Raptors' side, Bosh won't have any help from guard Jose Calderon for the second straight time against the Magic. Calderon, who is averaging 13.1 points and is among the NBA's leaders in assists, is out with the same strained right hamstring that sidelined him for two games in November.

Will Solomon is expected to start for him.

NBA Notes

Quote:
The Spanish Stockton?
If you tuned in to the Nuggets-Raptors game last week, you were treated to a little helping of Jose Calderon, the Toronto point guard. I continually say he's one of the more underrated players in the league, because he didn't play American college basketball, he's not a flashy, Nike-ad sort of guy and he plays for the Raptors. Against Denver, he tallied 11 assists, each time the public-address announcer saying the scorer's name, followed by: "Gracias, Jose Calderon."

He is third in the league with 9.0 assists per game and second with 4.03 assists per turnover.

"He's a true point who cares about the point," Karl said, "and in the last few years we talk about Chris Paul and Deron Williams, but this kid isn't very far behind him. I think Calderon is (John) Stockton-like. Eighty percent of his team's decisions are made by his decisions."

thats exactly how he gets his numbers.
and if you believe Karl that 80% of our decisions are made by Calderon then why are we a losing team?
