Time To Blow It Up

The ceiling for this group appears to be very low. If everything goes well, maybe they can make a first round playoff exit in a good year.

It should be obvious to everyone by now that mediocrity is the ceiling for this group, and it's not acceptable.

There are exactly three players on this team that I would keep: Jonas Valanciunas (future starting C), Terrence Ross (future starting SG) and Ed Davis (future first big off the bench).

Everyone else is expendable. Long term the Raptors would be better off with 2013/2014 lottery picks, promising rookies, and cap relief, rather than the roster as is currently assembled.

BC is a good GM, but if he's not prepared for another 2+ years of rebuilding, then he's not a good fit for this team.

Casey is a good coach, but if he's not prepared for another 2+ years of rebuilding, then he's not a good fit for this team.

We all love this team, but it's time to face reality.

Agree 100% with every point with the exception of Casey being a good coach and Ed worth keeping.

Players that need to go: Bargnani, Calderon, Kleiza, Amir + our scrubs

Players to go forward with: Lowry, Derozan, Valanciunas, Ross, Davis, Fields (because he's going nowhere for at least 18 months)

Aaron Gray is the only consistent defender on this team. It may be time to blow it up.

JoeyJoJo Shabbadu 11-28-2012 10:07 AM

New years is when its time to decide to blow it all up.

ejeezy 11-28-2012 10:15 AM

Of course it's time to blow it up, which is why I never understood the Lowry trade.

MLSE will not allow the franchise to explicitly tank seasons in a row with hopes of landing a superstar at the draft. They'll lose way too much money.

The issue here is that for us this seems like the only way we'll ever see a championship north of the border. Suck for a while, get lucky in the draft, and attract complimentary free agents.

Step one will be to re-acquire a first round pick this upcoming draft.

Now if we want to just barely scrape by and win 1 maybe 2 rounds tops in the next couple years, then the Raptors are headed down the right path.

I don't get the term blow it up though. Considering this team is only 2.3 years into a rebuild. It wouldn't necessarily be a complete blow up but some changes. Blowing it up is a bit overstating it imo.

Without picks and a lot of salary, it'd be a rebuild. They tried to rush it. It failed. JV is the only stud on this squad. We need one more.

BC seemed to change the direction of this team from rebuilding to playoff contenders this off season.

Well, that doesn't seem to be a realistic goal for this group.

I use the term "blow it up" because the direction of this team needs to change drastically. I don't see a whole lot of potential for success over a 5 year time span when I look over the roster, with the exception of the players I noted in the OP.

Theres no point in blowing it up if we don't get the players we want. If we can get a young superstar type player, then I'd say yeah lets blow it up... but if we blow it up for more mediocre players just to tank games, wtf is the point.

We're not in a position to get a young superstar.

The way to do that for this team is through the draft.

There's no way to know for sure that we will land a young superstar, you just have to keep rolling the dice until you get a solid group of guys, then let them build their own success and fill the gaps with veteran signings.

ollyaaa 11-28-2012 10:48 AM

Hope for the future is better than a lottery finish, any day.

We're not there yet but if in a month or so we're still this bad or worse I believe we should trade Bargs + filler(kleiza?) + our 2nd round pick depending what kind of return we could get. Hopefully a decent SF + 1st round pick. Then you let Calderon expire and amnesty Amir's 6.5Mil for next season. And go from there with that pick + some capspace in the summer. My guess is they want to re-sign Lowry, but they better aquire talent in the next 8 months if they have an ounce of a chance to do that.

FLO 11-28-2012 11:10 AM

Colangelo has hurt this team so much giving out big contracts to mediocre players. On top of that, he gave away what looks to be a top lotto pick over one of the next 2-3 years to Oklahoma/Houston. That pick could end up being Andrew Wiggins.

It's looking like we're years away from even being years away.

The way you say it......

HE hasn't really made any impact so far so in these circumstances the club is bigger than the player imo. Don't kiss his ass. He isn't getting us anywhere.

Mobat 11-28-2012 12:15 PM

Time for a new GM to clean house and start a new vision for the Raptors. This, of course implies that our current GM ever had a vision for this team, which is extremely questionable.

MikeToronto 11-28-2012 12:17 PM

Put it this way... I've long maintained that the only way to build a contender here is to draft a future sure-fire All-Star, preferably two, and the only way to do so is to suck hard enough long enough while having great talent evaluators and being lucky. ;)

If "blowing it all up" means trading everyone we can for picks and making sure we get as much chances in the lottery as we can - I am all for it. That's my biggest beef with BC, really - he has never committed to a decisive course of actions while in TO.

The point is the lottery...finishing last gives you the 1-3 spot. Finishing just out of or in playoffs guarantees a no chance at a great player. You cannot rebuild drafting from 7-15 spot.... light the fuse:tank::tank::tank:

JoeyJoJo Shabbadu 11-28-2012 12:58 PM

Until MLSE decides to spend over the cap, this team is going to suck with the assets it has. Spending is the only way that this doesn't take another 5-7 years.

FLO 11-28-2012 01:01 PM

We can't even tank effectively because our pick is beholden to OKC! Even if we're the worst in the fucking league this year we could get 4th pick and have to give it to OKC.

But at the same time, we NEED to suck and blow it up.
