Default Thrillers Intrasquad Game Analysis

Alright guys, back from the scrimmage, heres what I saw:

Well worth the 20 bucks. If youre in Ottawa and didnt go and they come back next year, GO.

All the players were introduced seperately, and Bargnani got the biggest cheer...

Until they had a seperate intro for Bosh after the national anthems and it was even louder in the place.

From what I remember:

TEAM BLACK- Bargs, Jack, Evans, Wright, Weems

TEAM WHITE: Rasho, Johnson, Belinelli, Calderon, Douby, Obryant, Banks, Derozan...one of these guys switched teams i nthe 2nd half I beleive.

Bargnani was easily the best player on the court. He contested everything at the rim, and he had 2 blocks on Amir, and a really nice shot contest vs Derozan on the fast break which sort of surprised me because I thought Demar was going to blow right by him for an easy one. His shot looks smooth though he only took 2-3 jumpers. Most of the time he was driving to the basket when he had the ball and he had a couple nice assists off the drive and dish.

I thought Jack was the 2nd best player on the court though most would say Reggie Evans should fill this spot. Jack did a great job of running the offence(split the pick and roll about 3 times vs Jose and OBryant) and getting to the rim for the drive and dish and finished the 2 layups where he went all the way(one was an and one). He was a lot more focused on getting to the rim on the pick and roll than any of the other PGs, as I dont think he took one jumper. His help defence on the weak side when there was a post entry feed was fabulous. He really seems like a high IQ PG.

Evans and Derozan are tied for 3rd best player.

The way Evans defends the pick and roll is amazing. He gets away with a subtle push on the pick man(often Johnson) and thats how he gets out to the ball handler so easy. If the refs ever caught that he was pushing Johnson out of the way to get a line on Jose to trap him he would have fouled out in the 1st qtr but hes very sneaky about it. He grabbed about every single rebound there was to grab, and he showed his veteran savvy by drawing fouls on Johnson and Obryant by exaggerating the contact when he was the roller, something both OBryant and Johnson dont have a clue to do. Reggie played like the player we thought we were getting, and any doubt of him not being the backup PF in favor of Johnson was shattered today, as I was one of those that thought Amir would beat him out for the backup minutes. Its not even close folks. My new nickname for him is 'The Board Collector'. Its probably been made up on here before though.

Derozan really showed off the good parts in his game. He had a couple of nice midrange jumpers, and one spectacular baseline alley oop where he snuck in backdoor after Jack split the D and his man lost him on the wing. Derozan really cuts hard to the ball and knows where to be on the floor. He also had a couple of really nice drives at the end of the game and showed his finishing ability with both hands. Hes going to be a great fit in the starting 5 as the 5th option who will take open midrange shots and sneak in for lobs in the half court. His handle was a lot better than I thought itd be. I think he may get beat up a bit on defence in the first couple of months but thats to be expected. Hes got great potential.

Belinelli showed some good ballhandling and passing skills. He had a couple of really nice left handed passes off of penetration, and his shot is smooth. He had a really nice pullup midrange jumper off of penetration. Hes undoubtedly going to be a solid rotation player for us. Having another playmaker off the bench is going to be invaluable.

Wright looked good in the 1st half with a couple of nice jumpers and some good help defence but wasnt noticeable in the 2nd half. Hes going to be a good rotation player though with his man D and ability to hit open 3s.

Jose was on cruise control. Didnt force anything at all on the pick and roll, just went around it and made a simple pass. He did have to force against the shot clock though and Douby defended him well on those. I think he went 0/2 and not much else to speak on, though he looked more in tune on defence I guess.

Rasho was solid on defence and had a couple of nice layups on the high low with Johnson. He had to postup vs Bargs twice with the shot clock running down and that didnt end well, with Bargs forcing him to shoot one off the top of the backboard and the other was blocked. Rasho was Rasho.

Douby showed us what we already knew, hes a SG in a PGs body and he likes to shoot. Not much more to talk about.

Obryant had a couple of nice blocks, but if you look at the entire game, he was manhandled by Evans on the pick and roll like I spoke about before, and he didnt know how to defend Reggie driving right into him. Hes just not aggressive or physical enough. And Jack absolutely made him look stupid on a couple of those pick and rolls where he split them and got to the rim.

Banks sucked.

Weems displayed a new style that should catch on in the NBA quickly, the mouthguard on his ear. He had a nice midrange shot on one possession, besides that he was invisible. He had some nice dunks in practice though and his shot looks nice.

And Johnsons finishing around the bucket was awful. If hes going to beat out Evans for minutes later in the year hes gotta out beast him on the boards and with his defence. His offence was awful. He looked like he didnt know what he was doing out there.

All in all it was a fun outing and I hope they come back again. My friend had a crazy digital camera from Carleton so he took some amazing pics which I'll post once he sends them to me.

Judging by the game, I'd have the lineup as so:

Jose, Jack, Douby
Derozan, Belinelli
Turk, Wright
Bosh, Evans, Johnson
Bargs, Rasho, Johnson

If you guys have any questions feel free.

great news about bargnani, and if evans is the better man, than so be it
I'm really sorry about amir, I had very high hopes for him, maybe during the season he will start learning some offense, we has a ton of teachers on that side of the ball

Thriller fantastic.

If you had to say one thing though, what does it seem Bargnani improved the most upon? Or is it more rounded?

Amazing. Wish I could have bee there, but that description is the next best thing.

My only question is, obviously Bosh and Turk were out, did anyone look not to be not quite 100%?

Good work, dude.

I think we should call Evans "Chairman of the Board"

Nice job Thriller. Nice to see Bargs and DeRozan doing well. I loved the thing about Evans the best. The thing that made me laugh the most:

He actually looks like he cares about guarding the basket this year. His post defence has always been good to very good, but he looks like hes more in tune to whats going on on the help defence side of things, which is the one thing I said he needed to improve on the most. He was defending most of the shots that came near the basket. The only time I was disappointed with him is when he didnt get on the floor when there was a loose ball and Jose did. He still doesnt like bending much, heh.

I cant say its rounded as he didnt really do all that much on offence with the team looking to run specific plays and not so much what theyd run more in game with specific iso's and pick and rolls for our best players. It would have been nice if they isolated him so he could show if he improved his midrange game off the dribble and post game. Most of the shots he took were set shots or dribble drives.

Everyone looked pretty healthy.

Only Johnson and Banks looked out of place. Banks on both sides of the ball, and Johnson on offence. Actually, OBryant too on pick and rolls. Man was he awful on those.

I like Bargs, I'm hard on all of our players when they dont play up to the potential I think they should. I loved Bargs in his rookie year, and I believe I rightfully blasted him in his 2nd yr. He looked a lot better last season and thus I stopped hating on him for the most part besides his help D which looks like its improved, but its just a scrimmage so we'll see.

Honestly, POB & Banks are horrible and hopefully they see nothing but garbage time this season. Banks will be lucky to even get that.Johnson...we'll see. But i doubt he plays much either.

Players that aren't worth much, and should see much if any time on the floor....Weems, Banks, POB, Douby. And Johnson might just be added that list.

I still like Johnsons potential, he just has to get it together and go harder. Reggie needs to beat the crap out of him too to get him to play tougher. Theres a huge difference between the two right now and its very apparent.

Awesome Thriller. Nice to see he's improved on that aspect of the game as it should makes Bosh's life easier and not worry about solely trying to defend the rim. If Bargnani is able to do it then maybe we'll be able to see the Bosh we saw at the Olympics where he demonstrated he could defend extremely well when playing with the right players.

Secondly, I love what you had to say about Evans. I think it was leftcoastbbalfan who said he's a terrible defender. The fact that he'll be defending back up PFs like Amir make me hopeful for the season.
