Default Thoughts after the first 2 games

Based on all the speculation for this 09-10 new Raptors team, expectations are extremely high. I want to analyze where the team is at, what's good, and what needs to change: immediately.

1. The Memphis game ended, it wasn't pretty. No one was happy. But the best part coming out of that game is Chris Bosh's play. He flat out dominated, which is an amazing sign.

2. Jose Calderon - The most disappointing Raptor in my opinion. If we are going to be successful, he will need to become the point guard he is capable of being. Jose has top 5 point guard written all over him, but he's missing something the first 2 games. I think the problem is that Jose doesn't make enough plays with the ball. His percentages are so high, but he never takes advantage of his skills. Why eliminate yourself from the offense in terms of scoring, when you shoot 50% from the field? I think he has superstar point guard potential if he can shift his attitude to more scoring. He's been pass first way too much, especially in the half court.

3. Bargnani - Either he's gonna be consistent or not. A 5 year/$50 million player must produce every night. Otherwise shows he's not worth the money.

4. Tomorrow's game against Orlando: I think if we win tomorrow, we will send a message by beating two good teams at home, and winning two home games in a row. We have to establish the ACC as a tough place to play. With VC not playing, we can boo him on the bench and it will be even more fun. We have to come out with energy at home, and dominate them. Turkoglu against old team will be sick.

5. Most importantly: I think we have shown that we have a solid defensive system, especially in the first game. Jay Triano has really impressed me with his committment to defense. When people say that he's a bad coach, they don't realize that another coach would be focusing on offense as well. He has 99% of the time been focusing on defense, and this is the key to our success. I think we have potential to as Jay said: "absolutely destroy teams on the defensive end". This, along with other factors will be the key.

1. Yeah it was an ugly game. And yes, Bosh was a beast when he attacks the basket. But, I wish he wouldn't take those impossible jump shots and would just pass it to his teammates.

2. Jose hasn't been shooting well at all and all he does is pass the ball to Bosh. But when he does shoot well, he's pretty damn good. But of course most of the time he's passing it to Bosh lol

3. Bargs will become better

4. I think Magic will win because they're a freaking monster.

5. Yeah our D is a bit better. More work to be done though

Calderon shoots the same percentage as Bosh, therefore I think he needs to be taking a lot more shot attempts.

Our D is a bit better is not true. It was pretty amazing against Cleveland, and the key is there was a system. A good defensive system = success, and I think if the players can master the system, we have a chance. Before, there was no system on D. Now you can see good rotations, and a legitamate system.

Turkoglu needs to be more involved in the offense.

when Jose has the ball in his hands, he just stands there....
in 2 games he has under 20 shots...he needs more touches....
not maximizing his use.

Jose was about perfect in the first game, as far as what I want to see out of him. The other night he made Marcus Williams look like an All-Star, and I just don't get that.

As far as the defense goes, it has to be about everyone playing their part and making their rotations. If you have a guy like Bargnani reacting so poorly, and not getting anything in terms of positioning, then it's not going to work. I liked the charge he got on Gasol, but even there he looked a little slow. I'm hoping that he's still getting his conditioning together and that it's not going to be a consistent problem, or I'm going to have little interest in watching that.

Is he being held accountable or treated with kid gloves? If it's not the former, then my optimism is entirely misplaced.

Thoughts after only two games of play aren't really fair to this team but at the same time they are not surprising me. This team is so relied on FG% its unbelievable. Game 1 you have Bargs on total fire and that just carried the team and game 2 no one really stepped up on shooting and what do u know a loss. This will be the theme of the season unless you can get a player giving out easy buckets which you won't. This team needs a garbage man down low to keep giving the team points when their shot isn't falling. The closest a player gets to the basket (besides penetration points) is prob Bosh and he could also be considered a perimeter oriented PF.

I hope I'm wrong but if you are a perimeter team you have to continue to out shoot other teams in order to win. A hard thing to do in the NBA day in and day out.

For me, the biggest dissapointment was Bosh. As I said before, the only chance we could be good this year was if Bosh was going to play good defense. In the first game he seemed much improved, but against Memphis he showed that he is still underpowered and will be exploited at will by all the strong PFs this year again. The fact that he can abuse an even worse defender in randolph will not come even close to offsetting his defense.

Regarding Bargnani, I wasn't shocked that he couldn't defend Gasol, he is also underpowered and always had difficulties defending big centers. However, what truly shocked me was how selfish he started the Memphis game. He was the second coming of TJ Ford in the first quarter.

Calderon is not even a dissapointment anymore. I wanted to believe he's a better defender that what he showed last season, but deep down I probably knew that wasn't the case. Right now I'm almost certain that by the end of december he will either be traded or moved to the bench.

All in all, I would have MUCH preferred to lose against the Cavs and win in Memphis. In order to have a shot at a high playoff seed this year we must destroy the weak teams and maybe grab a game here and there against the top teams. After two games it's clear that this team will be a .500 give or take team, and more likely "take" ....

1. I admit, that game was really disappointing. Bosh should do well offensively cause its a mismatch when Randolph. He needs to improve his defense to more agile and bulkier PF.

2. My only gripe with Calderon was he was settling for his jumpshots that wasn't falling. He started to drive in the lane at some point in the game which freed up some shooters but after he got blocked, he went back to the jumpshots.

3. Bargnani, *sigh* what can i say about this guy. most players kinda find themselves after hitting the rookie wall, others take a little longer. His inconsistency is really hurting the Raps. I kinda base the Raps game the first 2 min. of bargnani's game. when he is aggressive and his shots are falling, Raps will have a good game.

4. I'm kinda looking forward to playing Orlando. Win or lose, it will be a "learning" game for the raps as always when playing the big 3 of the eastern conference.

5. Jay Triano's defense system is way better when mitchell was coaching the Raps. We do have a solid defense as proven with the game against Cleveland. What we need to improve on is dealing with pick & rolls, boxing out to prevent the other team to get an offensive rebound and defensive rotation when somebody tries helping on a mismatch.

my thought: inconsistency.

if the other one is in full-throttle. the other is playing a half-assed game. no wonder...

^ Bosh made that up with his insane boards and what.. 37 points? Bargs is the one that needed stepping up in that game.

I really think is too early to draw any conclusions. I said before the season started that Raptors has a very good potential but there are so many things to glue together; some of these little things will work, some of them no. Jose playing along with Turk and other ball handlers was one of the possible issues. Jose is still Jose, but he may not be that efficient playing off ball, he needs to find new ways of contributing and to be comfortable with this role. Is going to take time to adjust, is not about Jose being unselfish/selfish, is just a matter of adjusting. Clearly, the game that Jose use to run in the past (controlling the ball most of the time, looking for the best safe pass or jumper) is not going to work for Raptors, it is too predictable. The new plan, to have 2-3 ball handlers (Jose/Turk/ optional(Jack or Belinelli)) requires quite few changes for Jose game. Patience guys, I would say by middle December we should know if this is going to work.
