Thought on our options for Summer of 09...and 2010

With all the talk of the signing of Jermaine O'neal, I thought it would be good to take a look at some of the possibilities the offseason his 20 Million/yr contract comes off the books. That offseason, he is our only Unrestricted FA (With Jawai and Bargs being restricted). However, there is some SERIOUS TALENT hitting the open market that season. Let's discuss what the best possible move for the raps will be in 09. Should the resign JO, or try to land one (or 2 of the following players:

Wing players:

Joe Johnson
Tracy McGrady
Ray Allen
Manu Ginobli
Hedo Turkoglu

Bigs:

M. Camby
M. Okur
C. Boozer
B. Haywood

NOTE: Steve Nash is also an UFA , but I don't think we have a need there.

I say we try to a combo of say Camby/Haywood and Ginobli/Johnson. That would give us a true 5, both of which are huge on D and the boards, and a legit scoring wingman that can create and take offensive pressure off of Bosh. I think that puts us into the contender bracket with a starting line of say:

1.Calderon
2.Ginobli/Johnson
3.Parker/Barg's
4.Bosh
5.Haywood/Camby

Another possibility is that they don't resign him, and they save the money to try and resign Bosh to an extension before he hits the market and one of the other premium players hitting the market in 2010. Everyone is talking about LBJ, but there is an abundance of superstars hitting the market then:

Kobe,LBJ,Pierce,Nowitzki,Richardson.C. Butler,J. Howard,Prince,Battier,Ming
Gasol,Wade,T.Parker, Jefferson, Stoudemire,Chandler,Dalembert

I know we won't land LBJ, Kobe or Pierce, but unless Miami turns it around, I could see D.Wade leaving Miami. If Washington doesn't make any strides I could see Butler leaving there. If Nash ever left Phoenix next season, I could see Amare wanting out in 2010. There is solid players like Prince and Battier available who know how to win and play shut down permiter D. There are All-Star 5's in Chandler and Ming (dalembert is also solid and would come much cheaper letting us sign a wingman too perhaps). If we don't resign Kapono either, we'd have like 15-20million per season to spend on someone hopefully, so we'd have a shot at alot of these players IMO. If the unthinkable at this time happens and we don't resign Bosh, we would have a stupid amount of money available and we shouls easily be able to revamp the roster with other promising superstars. Imagine we replaced JO, Bosh and Kapono with say........D.Wade or C.Butler,A Soudemire and S. Dalembert !!!!!Would anyone care we lost Bosh, I bet not. With a starting line of :

1 Calderon
2.Wade/C.Butler
3. Parker/Bargs
4. Stoudemire
5. Dalembert

I know that is a stretch, but it does give good light on the possibilities the JO contract will give when it does expire, and prove just how good of a trade it was......

What do you guys think the best option is for us, go big in 09, or wait for 2010?

2010:
And then offer a big contract to Joe Johnson(15 per)

Can resign JO for around 5 per then roll with

Calderon/Ukic
JJ/
Moon/Kaps
Bosh/Bargs
Brags/JO

Signing Camby will not be an option in 2010...he's a dinosaur now....he'll be an even greater dinosaur then. It'll be us signing Hakeem all over again.

Hmm... I hate to be a party poopers, but JO's contract runs through the 2009-10 season. So, his 23 mil. come off the books in the summer of 2010, not 2009. We will be lucky to be able to use the full MLE next summer without going over the luxury tax...

I would go after:

Joe Johnson (SG)
Hedo Tukoglu (SF)

Line up:

Calderon/Ukic ?
Johnson/Parker
Hedo/Kapono
C.bosh/Bargnani
JO/Jawai/Humphries

And if JO for what ever reason doesn't work out then:

Joe Johnson (SG)
Haywood (C)

Line up:

Calderon/ Ukic?
Johnson/Parker
Kapono/Moon
Bosh/Bargnani
Haywood/Jawai/Hump

Vets minimum?
And Manu would be around 32-33 by that time.

manu in 2 years will be a shelf, too old and too many injuries and too many summers spent with the national team. I would LOVE to have last season's Manu on our team, but I'm very skeptical about his 2010 version.

Anyway, going back to the topic, I think it's way too early to think about 2010. First Bryan has to see how this roster performs, and he might try a new coach in 2009 if things don't go all that well. Then you have Bargnani and Moon, two big unknowns that will be critical for any future aquisitions. If Andreea proves to be a star at the center position, than JO is expendable, otherwise we might stick with JO (at a significant discount) and try to dangle andreea (and maybe moon) for a quality wing player.

Too many ifs at this point ...
