SportsNation David Thorpe: (11:08 AM ET ) John thinks winning close games is mostly luck. I agree to some extent, but not in the playoffs. Edge to Cleveland.
I hope and pray we don't play LeBron and the Cavs in the first round of the playoffs. But anyhow, do you guys think winning close games is mostly do to luck?

if guys would simply step into the lane, they could get him in foul trouble.

Find one raptor that would do it other than Delfino though.

I think it's in the middle. Having a killer guy like lebron or kobe, really helps in close games. That being sad, even kobe has something like a 20% success on game winning shots, so in the end luck is a factor. We were actually a lot luckier last season, we've won most of our overtime games and a lot of very close games. This year was mostly a 50-50 affair. And we are a better team this year - which goes to show that luck is important.

As for Lebron - he's scary, but I'd still take my chances with him than Detroit/Boston who would destroy us. I don't even remember the last time we beat Detroit in a game where they cared about the outcome. Last April it was a semi-pre season game, so it doesn't count. I still hope the cavs can catch orlando, although games like last night will not help ...

Yeah, last night's cav game was funny to watch. Last minute execution was brutal...but that was solely because the new players (mainly Wally) was bricking shots and passing to noone. Even with all the wasted plays, Lebron managed to drive and tie the game on more than one occasion. Bron would eat us in the playoffs.

We have a better chance vs CLE than we do Boston. Bostons gonna play better than they did early i nthe season come playoff time and we have no chance vs that.

Vs Cle, I think we have a chance if Mitchell ever figured out a scheme to slow down the Lebron top iso, like TRAPPING him on the pick and rolls or the screen set by the PG when hes trying to go top iso like MIL did last night. Get the ball out of his hands and make another guy dribble the ball and dont let him get it back. CLE's D doesnt scare me either.

i just think that all the pressure in the world will be on the shoulders of the celts...
and it may crack them a bit.
we have the skill to take them deep into the series and that pressure will add up with every game... which will be to our advantage.
Garnett will be a force, but i just like how we match up against them.

the cavs just scare me because i hate them so much and we have absolutely NO answer for lebron.
2 games this season he took over and buried us at the end of the game... i do not want to go thru that for a whole series.
and of course he'd have the refs in his pocket... which would cause me to rip every hair out of my head... i dont think i could handle that.

i think us vs the celts would allow us to play "our " game and play as hard as possible to win.
vs the cavs, lebron would take us out of our game plan and we'd be whinning about the refs all series long, which would get into our heads and distract us.
the raps play their best when they are in control, and rolling... when we play the cavs we lose that control... and in the end we beat ourselves and let lebron walk all over us.

It took the greatest shooting night since the 1980's for us to beat the Celtics. And I'll take Tom Thibodeaus adjustments to defending the pick and roll if it gets out of hand again over Mitchells ability to adjust to find another way to exploit Boston. Boston didnt defend the pick and roll the same way they did all season that night for some reason and paid for it. I dont think we'd even win a game vs them, vs CLE we've shown we can outplay them, but we just couldnt finish. I think we'd be able to win 2+ vs them in comparison.

Agreed...not to mention they shot rather poorly in both our win and the game we almost won in TO. Cleveland 9 times out of 10, even if we only win 3-4 of those 10.

we should have 2 wins vs the Celts this season.
how in the worl Ray Ray hit that buzzer beater, i dont know.

but thats it right there... the celts are capable of having off nights.
they are capable of struggling.
and with the pressure that they will be dealing with, the chances of those things happening doubles.

cavs on the other hand, we'd outplay them for 3 quarters, only to get destroyed in the 4th by one man.
it doesnt matter how much we're ahead... or how badly they are shooting... lebron will fuck us up... and whats worse is that he'll get every whistle.

we play boston and win or lose, we'll have our heads up high... boston is a competitor worthy of losing to.
but if we lose to cleveland, it will rip our hearts right out of our chests... it will leave a sour taste in our mouths.

that one i'm a little skeptical on...
other than us taking them to a 7 game series and winning...
the only team i see beating the Celts is Detroit.
Cavs dont match up well vs really good teams.

Let me add my voice to Thriller's - I'd rather play LeBrons. True, our dumbass coach doesn't seem to be able to figure out the way to slow him down, but weirder things have happened before, you know. Namely, the Knicks in our first ever playoff series have executed beautifully against Carter, basically double-teaming him with their big as soon as he caught the ball at the top of the key and then doing their best to make sure he never gets it back. I'd let the rest of that team beat me rather than allowing LeBron to operate one-on-one against my perimeter defenders. On top of that, as amazing as his Allison-inspired shooting display was, I'd play him for the shot at all times rather than allowing dribble-penetration - in those cases when they do decide to allow that top-of-the-key iso.

P.S. The dude is 31% three-popint shooter this season and 32% for his career. As the season winds down and playoffs grind arrives, with the minutes he plays, even such a remarkable physical specimen is bound to get tired - and when the legs go, so does the long jumper. Let him shoot rather than drive and be physical with him when he does drive - and see what happens.

I'd take lebron too - we'll probably lose, but we stand a chance. Against Det/Bos we have none. At least we dominate the cavs at pg and pf, against boston we barely have an advantage at point and against detroit we are outmatched top to bottom ... All of our games against the Cavs the past 2 seasons have been even or we blew them - against Boston/Detroit we had one win, one tough loss and 4 blowouts so far ..
