Default Thinking hard about Amare....

First off, I know it's a risk.... but like the old saying goes "With great risk comes great reward".

With the Knicks playing as well as they are right now with Amare out of the lineup (and I honestly can't see him being ok coming off the bench when he comes back) you'd have to think that the time might be right to think about grabbing him.

Lord knows the Knicks want some cap relief and we can offer some in Jose so I was thinking about a deal along these lines....

Amare + Prigioni

for

Bargs + Jose

They get relief and a PF in return who'd be fine coming off the pine (I'd imagine) for that team.

We get an all-star PF and a decent replacement at the back up PG spot for Jose. Prigioni can ball.

Worst comes to absolute worst, Amare's contract runs the same length as Bargs'. And even if his knee was completely fugged and he never played another game for us we'd have clear minutes for Ed, Jonas, Amir and Kleiza up front and we'd have Prigioni there to keep the PG spot stable.

TBH, at this point I think it's addition by subtraction with Bargs and if Amare could come back and remain healthy for most of his remaining contract.... DD, Lowry and him? We shouldn't have any problems scoring the ball then. And Jonas would fit alongside Amare beautifully.

Thoughts?

I haven't seen much of him but I liked what I saw. Seems like another Jose TBH. Smart guy with a lot of experience who knows how to get others involved and run a team. And remember.... he just has to come in and spell Lowry... not talking about him for the starting job.

valid point, but i think we need to go pass the Calderon era, and get some solid attack first pgs. dont get me wrong, i like calderon, but it hasnt been working for us for years

the biggest issue here isn't whether amare will hold up or his contact. (though his contract will severely limit us from getting a starting caliber SF, let alone a star one). the biggest issue is I think bargnani's game would compliment NY's game very well. melo in the post, Bargnani providing spacing for that. it could make NY stronger than it makes us, and that's if Amare does work out.

and it's not addition by subtraction, if we needed that we would amnesty bargnani. this team, without bargnani, is worse. period. derozan's game without Bargnani will suffer, do not doubt that for a second. and you know, lowry's will too I think. just not enough range in this team without bargnani. Shooters get into slumps. his shot will come back. for 6 years, if we've seen one thing from bargnani, it's an elite or near elite offence.

we lose in this trade. big time

i don't amare is an all-star at this point. his contract is grossly overpaid for what he brings and there's no insurance on his contract. it's too much of a risk for ownership. i think he's going to be what elton brand became in his later years. decent, but an enormous cap killer. i wouldn't curse a team outside of new york with that. dude is getting paid 20 million.

wow, i actually agree with torap I have been thinking about this for a while. We might have to get them to somehow take back fields.

Amare will consistently give you 20/10 and Valanciunas playing beside him would be a good fit for both.

I am officially off the Bargnani bandwagon after 6 season. BC has been blindly supporting Bargs for years and now its time to move on.

He would arguable be a no. 1 option on this team, you dont think he could put up 20 a game?. Weather you like him or not, he is almost unstoppable on the offensive end.

people say that about Bargnani. is he doing it? nothing's a guarantee, and coming off an injury like that? and with lowry here I don't think he'd be a number 1 option here necessarily. they'd be 1a/1b with derozan being almost a 1c if his development keeps going. if Val get's to be as good as advertised, he could even be a 1D. and when fields comes along at a super star rate, 1E! what a problem to have huh?

To the original poster.... YAY, we'd have clear minutes for our bench players!

I think Amare is awesome, but he's not even playing. It's too much to give up for a guy that has a ruptured cyst in his knee. But the Prigioni guy sounds really good just looking at his name, he must be another soft euro!

yeah, it's just that simple.

for a start prigioni is not better than jose.

then we have the fact that Bargs is what, 3 years younger than amare? and on about 8mill less per year? And although Bargs has lots of niggly injuries, he has no major concerns.

plus we need a SF!

we lose.

Going for Amare is addressing the wrong issue, we need a SF... not a PF.

Ummm, please dont compare to amare to bargnani. Not looking at the salaries, it not even close. Amare has proven it over a very long time compared to barg's 13 games. I would take amare over Bargnani 10 out of 10 times.

Consistency > Bargnani

Ridiculous insinuation?

Given what you just said about Bargnani's "elite-level offense"?

Amare is a PROVEN all-star who scored 25/night as little as 2 years ago. He's also a career 53% shooter and grabs almost 9 rebs/gm.

Even LAST season when he was pretty bad for the Knicks he avgd about 17 & 8 on 48% shooting.

Compare that to Bargs' BEST season... 21 & 5 on 45% shooting.

Again... I acknowledge that it's a bit of a gamble but this would also show Lowry that we're serious about competing and would probably go a long way when it comes to convincing him to re-sign.

It's either this... or a play for Eric Gordon IMO.

Those are moves that are going to get us OFF this treadmill.

We lose? Why?

Bargs is younger, yes.... and cheaper.... for a REASON. He sucks!

Fields is here for another 2-3 years whether we like it or not. So is Ross. So is DD. One of them can end up playing the SF spot.

Question. The Raptors would be able to amnesty Amare in the off season, yes? If he's a total lemon. Guess my question is, can you use your amnesty on somebody you didn't sign?

If so, I'd think about this deal. Except substitute Shumpert for Prignoni.
