Raptors Things could have been so different.

Denver's going to get something for their main man to leave town, even though his contract is up and they are bargaining from a point of relative weakness. Carmelo could have lied and said he does not know what he wants to do, and Denver is in the mix. He could have told Denver management to their faces repeatedly that there is nothing going on and no matter what, he will work with the team that has been on his side for years. He then could have clammed up, waited 'til the season was over and went into hiding except for some backs-stabbing social media.

He could have left Ujiri holdng the bag, rolled back into town, and then tried to cozy up with George Karl like he was still a man of honour. "What's your problem, George?" You're just a hater!"

Whatever happened to having some honour or keeping your word? The reason Triano didn't feel like shaking Bosh's hand before a game is because he has lost some of that in the whole move to Miami.

There's a bunch of deflecting going on by the "amigos" saying that people are haters or just want you to live your life according to what they want. Many stars have changed teams and don't end up villains. Lying through your teeth and lying face to face with your organization when you know exactly what the plan is leaves you looking like a snake.

Fortunately, other players recognize a snake and call it out. To quote Carmelo:

"I'm not Chris Bosh".

I agree that what Melo has done is more fair to the team that has drafted him. However, Bosh and LeBron were free agents and made their decisions (or Decisions, if you will) within the rules of the CBA, exercising their right to choose where they wanted to play. Could we please, please let it all go?

And if they behaved in an untoward manner while doing it (Bosh - not so much, LeBron - definitely so) - bad on them, but what can you do?

Since this is a discussion board, there really is no place for stuffing conversation in a secret place because it is recent history. I like dunk contests, old uniforms and Butch Carter too, but that is not the only thing from the past worth discussing. In fact, it is current because Carmelo is doing it right currently. To see Denver getting multiple picks and players back is a kick in the nuts....further, their organization is not left with an ugly stigma.

As far as what we can do, we can shed light on it, discuss it, learn from it, honour the honourable, and learn what to expect so we don't get the wind knocked out of us again. It's a good fanbase, so it does not deserve much of what it gets.

I also think the management in this city responds to what fans scream for. There have been many players who have openly stated that they actually want to be here. If lessons are not being learned, the next guy who starts this "I don't know what I want to do"....in ths city? The fans have got to start calling to move him.

It's a good article... Being a snake isn't good... and trying to justify it by blaming others is clearly their only solution left.

the only way for Bosh to have teamed up with lebron and wade would have been through FA because no team had enough assets to trade for all three. thus its not justified that he did this solely to screw over the city. he had only one option and that one option happened to include us getting screwed. im not defending him, im just saying the decision wasnt entirely through spite.

It was a pretty good article but it was written in November, he already went back on his word, he doesn't care if the team gets better he just wants to leave.

There needs to be less emphasis on the league looking to lock up "franchise players", and allowing for easier movement of stars via trades.

As much as Melo supposedly is doing something right, he's still holding up any trade that's not to the Knicks. And Denver could easily get stuck just watching him walk.

The only problem with that is, he was always saying he wanted to be "the guy", he wanted to be in toronto. A year ago at the all star break his comments were, I want someone to come join me, why do I have to be thge one to go play somewhere else". Comments like that lead the fans and the organation to believe he likely will stay, or consider greatly. He doesn't seem to have been forthcoming with the organization. Apparently as soon as the season ended he pretty much washed his hands of this organization. Sorry, but what Melo is doing is at the very least a lot more honest.

Yeah - it's great going through a season with your main guy sticking one foot out the door all season long. And don't forget that the reason we and the Nuggets have to see the constant crap, is because he wants his big payday before the new CBA takes effect.

thats true, isnt new york screwing themselves over by making this trade?

a) trading pieces for melo and they arent trading scrubs. felton, i dunno who else but definatly people theyd prefer to keep

b) theyd be paying melo max money under THIS cba and his contract will count against their cap next year under the new, lower caped cba, thus reducing their ability to add good role players.

wouldnt it be better for newyork just to wait it out? melo wants to go there anyways.., theyd be shooting themselves in the foot by doing this, granted not as much as new jersey but still

only problem with that is...PEOPLE CHANGE THEIR MINDS...

especially when given the opportunity to play alongside two super stars, with guaranteed opportunities to win rings.

if he had a change of heart before or after the end of the season, WE'LL NEVER KNOW. and therefore no point in speculating.

Then i hope you're not one to say we should have traded him.

respect to Masai Ujiri for pulling this theft

But we couldn't really do the same last year. Before LEbron with his decision and Bosh with the sneaking away there was no such notion as big all-stars deciding they want to play together for a specific team. World was a more innocent place.

Would you have traded Bosh at the all-star break? I wouldn't. We were the hottest team in the league and we were 5th seed. Hell would've broken loose on this forum if we did.

Things went downhill, but keeping Bosh at the deadline was the right move for in that situation.

while superficially similar, I think the situation is nothing like ours
bosh and lebron had a lot more leverage than carmelo. With the new CBA, there's a risk that he either can't leave anymore (if a franchise tag is introduced), or that he'll get significantly less money, tens of millions etc.

so carmelo had all the incentives to announce his intentions to leave, so he can light a fire under NY's ass to try to get him now. Bosh and Lebron had no reason to do the same.

Carmelo will go to NY one way or another, but he'll much rather do it now, via S&T, even if that means NY will lose some assets. From NY's perspective, they also know they'll get him, potentially for free in the summer, so they are in no hurry. However, by spreading the rumour that he might sign an extension in Denver, carmelo is trying to create some urgency on their part.

I'm also not convinced that Denver is getting THAT much in return. If they could trade those players into draft picks later, that'd be a fantastic move. If they decide to keep them all and move forward with their new core, they'll just turn into Indiana, a .500 or so team that's not good enough to make waves and not bad enough to get good picks. Felton, Laywson, Gallinary, Chandler and Nene are good complimentary pieces, but they're not winnining a playoff series with that alone ...

Just to be clear, am I to believe that some people actually think that the amigos decided on decision day where they wanted to go? Life is tough if it's that easy to be tricked.

A guy will look you in the eye and lie, screw your organization and come back into town looking to shake hands and kiss babies.

If we can't learn from it, we're doomed to keep repeating it.

And the main diffenence with Carmelo is he did not want to commit an act of mailce against his own organization, so when he spoke up and said he wanted to work with his organization, that is what he did. Contrast this to saying that, but sneaking around and day after day telling people to their faces that nothing is going on.
