Default Thanks BC

Today I have seen the nba luxury tax status on the espn site.
Only one franchise under the luxury tax has a better record than raps: atlanta.
Lakers $21,430,778
Mavericks $17,891,714
Celtics $14,324,318
Knicks $14,107,734
Cavaliers $13,011,251
Magic $12,574,601
Spurs $10,185,572
Wizards $8,658,888
Nuggets $5,490,379
Suns $4,887,977
Jazz $4,858,225
Hornets $3,331,809
Heat $2,817,658
Rockets $2,611,747

Well done BC.

Very good point.

I think to actually contend for a title MLSE has to be willing to go into the tax.

Besides Detroit in the last decade has there been a team that has won the title that hasen't been in tax?

Nice catch Straight-8.

Though nobody are taking money out of my own pocket to pay those, that makes huge sense. Poor but successful.

I like that.

Mods, please, fix the title of the thread - that typo screws the meaning up completely.

Why? Who cares? Let them spend $21 million over the cap and sign Bosh and Wade.

Its not our money. Ticket prices reflect demand, not finances.

Spend away!

Ever bothered to understand the CBA?

We can't sign Wade this summer even if he wanted to come as we will be way over the cap. The results pointed out in the original post of this thread illustrate BC's ability to get a good bang for his buck, so to speak.

So how do the Lakers get Gasol and go $21 mil over the cap?

Here's what over spending has done for teams IMO.

Lakers $21,430,778 Gasol = RING

Mavericks $17,891,714 Marion, Howard, Dirk = Perennial contenders

Celtics $14,324,318 Allan+Garnett = RING

Knicks $14,107,734 F*** Ups that sign old and busted

Cavaliers $13,011,251 Spending all they can to keep LeBron

Magic $12,574,601 VC + Lewis+ Howard= Fianalists

Spurs $10,185,572 Duncan+ Parker+Manu = RINGS

There's the top 6 spenders. I'd say they are all doing well going against the CBA and paying a tax (except Knicks of course). And really, those numbers mean nothing to teams that are paying them. Pennies.

So why dont we spend spend spend like the Leafs use to? We can keep Bosh, get another marque player (Joe Johnson?) and get in the game!

can only get a player like Johnson if we trade for him, we don't have the cap space to sign him as a FA next year
luxury tax is there so you can retain players

Like i've said before, you have to spend to contend. Yeah BC's done a good job in terms of business but if we're going to contend we'll need to get into the tax bottom line. Atlanta isn't there yet but they will be, or they'll break up the team.

something wrond there... Magic didn't spend much more to be a finalist... this year they go over the cap and see money will buy them a ring or not?

I have to agree spend when you got a chance. If a hard cap comes in to play thats a different story but for now they should SPEND SPEND SPEND. Yes we won't get David Stern gift deals like Gasol to Lakers for some basketballs but at least Raptors have a fighting chance. IF the MAGIC out of all small market teams can find money to go over the tax the Raptors can

Why are you thanking him? Do you have a share in MLSE?

I'll thank him when we have a championship.

I think what the OP is trying to say is that given the resources that BC has, he has done a remarkable job in building a team.

Any GM can create an elite team if he was given unlimited money to work with.

In Toronto, BC doesn't seem to even have the green light to go over the cap, even though MLSE emphasizes they will spend money to win. However,we know that ain't true, given that MLSE is a business-first.

BC started with a team that was $12.4 million under the cap, had Bosh and the #1 pick
what happened to building thru the draft like other teams have done successfully i.e. Portland, OKC and others

Draft schmaft!!

The fact is, unless we're picking in the top 5-7 it's a crap shoot most years. And BC has aquired Amir, Beli, Jack and drafted Bargnani & Derozan who are all 20-25yrs old and are probably better then most mid first round-late first rounders the Raptors could have taken.

This team currently has alot of young players that were taken in the first round and all have talent.

Bosh, Jack, Amir, Beli, Bargnani, Derozan all young talented players that were drafted in recent years and who are all in their early-mid 20's. I have absolutely no problem with that talent or the lack of our own picks so to speak.
