Default Team Toughness

Since the trade for Rudy Gay and the return of JV, the team has become much tougher - both mentally and physically. Gay is a big reason for this, as he has to play against some of the best players in the NBA for several years and played on a hard-nosed team in Memphis. JV may be young, but he plays with energy, fire, and toughness. He doesn't back down from anyone.

But the other change has been at PG, where Lowry, while not the perfect PG, brings toughness to the court. He gets up on opposing PGs and forces turnovers with this defensive pressure. He doesn't back down against bigger players and actually accepts the challenge. We saw that last week against Indiana when Kyle pushed David West in the back near the end of the 4th Quarter, and this moved distracted West and indirectly led to a turnover.

Last night against New York, he and I think Amir switched off on their players, leaving Lowry on Chandler. Felton took a long-range jump shot and missed. Lowry got inside position on Chandler and boxed him out, even pushing the 7-footer backwards. The Raptors got the rebound.

No offence to Jose Calderon, but I doubt the Raptors beat Indiana and New York with the Spaniard as the starting PG. Those two games were physical, and the Raptors showed up. No longer is this team relying on Amir Johnson to provide the physical play, but now the team has Gay, JV, Lowry, and guys off the bench to also flex some muscle.

Good post, I'm loving the toughness and grit I'm seeing from this team lately. Especially that Indiana game, one of the best and exciting games I've seen in a while.

Even Jack Armstrong was ready to "jack up" Hansborough!

Lowry also was key to stopping Lawson on Denver's last play, pushing him out to the half court line so that he ended up being very rushed with a wild shot.

Lucas has been good at staying in front of guys as well.

lowry definitely got abused by lawson. i'll chalk that up to a bad game though because in general i have been impressed with his defensive tenacity.

Lawson was on a mission that night with 3 key guys out. He's a tough cover with those guys in the lineup. He had to be the guy that night which is dangerous.

Love Lowry but getting turfed out by taking a 2nd T by yelling "Bullshit" at the ref is not mentally tough. I would have wanted to rip into him if I'm Casey or his teamates. Could toughen up on D some.

JV is so tough it's cool. Rudy Gay sucked so bad but definately mentally tough to keep going back at it and playing good D.

Like the team much better this way.

good post - can never have enough toughness especially when this team starts making the playoffs on a regular basis. play off ball gets ugly in the half court and you need fighters.
