IF..we get rid of Jose and make Bayless the starter..and pick up a solid backup PG.
IF..we pick up a big defensive center.
IF..one of JJ, Davis, Amir becomes a reliable offensive threat(15ppg) to back up DD and Bayless when they're not hitting shots.
IF..we somehow miraculously learn to play defense.

We could make the playoffs in the east next year.

if we can hit a home run in the lottery and land williams or irving, i think we're a playoff team. Either one of those players would address a tremendous need.

Here's a few facts people... If there is an NBA season next year, the Raptors will not make the playoffs with a starting lineup of this: Bayless, DD, Johnson/some rookie we're gonna end up drafting, Davis and some defensive center you people are proposing we trade Bargnani for... How can you guys genuinely (stop reading if you were being sarcastic) believe that we can make the playoffs with one of the worst starting lineups in the league.

That lineup will not only fail to make the playoffs but will struggle to win 15 games... You would probably have better luck sending 5 headless chickens to start every night than to expect anything significant out of these guys. Hate him or love him, if you want youngsters to develop properly you don't send them out with youngsters, they need a Jose to lead them. Jose is not what is stopping us from making the playoffs, and the PG combination of Bayless and Calderon should remain. Jerryd has a lot to learn before he is ready to captain any ship, and who better than a man who hits almost the fewest icebergs in the league. Bayless can score no doubt but unless he adds a proper passing game, where he can actively and consistently drop 7-8 dimes per 30 minutes, leaving him as our main PG option will do nothing for him but may actually lead to him regressing, and no guys will not sign another veteran PG who can produce Jose's numbers via trade or free agency..

At SG, we are pretty secure with Demar DeRozan, who I have little doubt will improve again over the summer. Our bench however is a different story. Barbosa, I believe is the one who needs to leave this team the most. He's already polished and does not have a future with this team anyway so why not cash in on him before he walks out on us for nothing. Weems, if he stays is a solid player to have on the bench but I don't see him winning any 6th man of the year awards any time soon.

At SF, James Johnson, in short is not a starter on any team on this league except for a team which has scrubs at that position. Julian Wright is a scrub and the only time he will ever shine is on NBA 2k11, and that's only if Julian himself alters his stats to make him better. We can't possibly expect a serious run with this guy on our bench. He belongs in the D-League or as an 11th or 12th guy at best, despite his hustle. Kleiza, is still a member of this organization and when he comes back will solidify the position along with Johnson.

At PF, Ed Davis and Amir are young guys who play hard but they just aren't great scorers yet, until 1 or the other can start averaging 15 to 18 points a night on a regular basis, alongside 7 to 9 boards, the playoffs will allude us, plain and simple. Reggie Evans needs to go. He's a rebound hoarder, who adds nothing to this team in the long run.

At center, I am a fan of Andrea Bargnani and I whatever I say, will most likely come off as biased but I really don't think he's the reason why we're a 22 win team this season. Trading him for a defensive center will leave us hungry offensively as we would need to find 22 + points from somewhere, no matter how overrated most may claim that to be. He does however, need to be kicked int he ass to start playing like he cares, like he did against New York and Miami. He is still young and unpolished, and there is always hope that he can improve on those aspects. I still see him as a perfect number 2 option, rather than a number 1, that he was forced to become. Place him, next to a guy who draws the defense's main attention and you have a lethal combination right there. What we should really focus on, is adding a proper backup center or if you get a starter like Marc Gasol, move Bargs to PF and run that front court combination with Davis and Amir backing them up. Ajinca is a scrub and needs no words.

-------
Even with all these suggestions, which I believe are realistic this team will still find difficulty making the playoffs and would still only be an ~30 to 35 win team next season and would be about 10th in the East which is exactly where we don't want to be. But then again, what are predictions.. this team may actually be able to gel and start ballin' and may prove us all wrong, which I would love. I mean who would have thought that Demar would have exploded onto the scene as he did this season.

hard to say until we see the final roster come pre-season

there's a lot of Euros supposed to go in the first 15 picks but i hope BC doesn't snag one of them, Kanter's really the only one id want but we're good at PF

i think it's Irving or bust at PG, which likely means we'll draft Derrick Williams, Harrison Barnes, or Perry Jones

i reallly hope we dont draft Walker with a top 5 pick.. we need a PG but not if it means sacrificing our pick for someone who would likely get picked outside the top 10.. gotta draft the best player available and then shuffle around the roster accordingly.

its not hard to make the playoffs in the East record wise, but unless we make a substantial trade i can't see us being more than 30-33 win team

Until we get out of being one of the worst teams in defense (points allowed, opponent FG %) we will not make the playoffs. People use Indiana as an example, they play defense. They have players in important positions (PG, SF, C) that can actually defend their position.

I disagree we were dead last in the league last season and we essentially a layup away from making it. Being bad at defense prevents you from being elite, not can make the playoffs and even get a top 4 seed in the east, playing solely score more than you basketball.

Playoffs are a possibility. I don't see tanking being a part of the package, but then I don't see a full season in the books either. If this team is able to commit fully to defense, and provides the same amount of effort as they did this season, then it makes the playoffs.
Sea of red kinda backfired when New jersey showed up wearing their red Jerseys. Pretty idiotic actually....hahahaha

playing some kind of defense, as well as just playing harder than the other team most nights, is going to be enough to get a pretty good number of wins in the east. And when this team succeeded they got stops in crunch time at least. Then they lost key guys to injury, AP got older, and they never got back to the same level of defense, or the playoffs, in short order.

We need to build a strong identity first before we make the playoffs. I don't want to become a playoff team next season and then a lottery team the season after.

If we are going to make the playoffs at the expense of the development of your young guys then no thanks.

The question will be: Who are the Toronto Raptors?
Will we be a mediocre team fighting for the 8th seed
or a bright young team who plays hard and has a bright future.

I think we'll be in the mix for 7th-8th. I think Colangelo will make a couple moves this summer that will make us better going forward so we'll be better overall. Probably 35+ wins.

Then again, there won't even be a season.

Unfortunately, this team will not be making the POs next year. Out young stars will improve though as they have the summer to work and get starting minutes. I see ed davis getting any where from 8-10 RPG and 12-15 PG and 1.3 BPG next year as our starting PF. Now with being said, we still don't have an idea where this team is headed. Who do we keep bayless or Jose. This season we have seen that Bayless is horrid coming off the bench compared to when he started. Do we keep Jose and play him until the trade deadline to boost up his value and trade him for pieces or what? We will also need a back up SG and SF as i do not see JW coming back, not sonny and barbosa will be dealt for younger pieces a he is a vet and an expiring contract. Now for the real issuse with the team, C. We all know Bargs will not take us far with him at C. With his contract, he can not be a guy getting off the bench. Do we keep him for one more year or do just give up on him and trade him. This team is still all over the place and next year if there is a next year will not be enough time for us to find our identity and answer all the question marks.

i have high hopes for next year. I think we'll grab 8th seed and make it for sure. We need a true C like you said. PG is ok for now i guess. Trade jose and Bargs and get a PG to play behind bayless(or in front) then draft kanter. And pick up some more players to come off the bench. We need to build our starting five first then start buliding our 2nd unit players off the bench. then BAM! playoffs
