Arrow Teachers shopping MLSE, Rogers not the only potential buyer

Quote:
The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is actively shopping its most high profile asset, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, but there is "absolutely no deal," to sell a majority stake to Rogers Communications Inc.

According to sources close to the preliminary discussions, "there's nothing concrete" in terms of a sale that would include the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors NBA basketball team, Toronto FC soccer club and the Toronto Marlies, the Leafs minor league hockey team.

Teachers owns a 66% stake in MLSE, which is valued at approximately $1-billion.

In fact, sources familiar with events say Teachers has also been in talks with BCE Inc. which recently bought CTV, Larry Tanenbaum, the chairman of MLSE, and at least two potential U.S. buyers. BCE was not immediately available for comment.

Mr. Tanenbaum holds a 20.5% stake in MLSE, one the most profitable professional sports ownership groups in North America. TD Capital Group holds the remaining 13.5%.

BCE = Bell, who owns CTV, who owns TSN.

Let's combine our funds here at RF and make an offer! Surely we can eclipse 1 billion. I'll start with $14.

I've already contributed enough as someone constantly ripped-off by Rogers. And I know I'm not alone. The cost has been passed on to us long in advance. Let's just get this done.

Leafs fans should be use to overpaying for a terrible product. The most profitable franchise just so happens to be one of the worst teams in the NHL?

I think it is smart of MLSE to sell now. I think the value of the leafs has peaked.

I saw some study on the average leaf fan and basically it ended up being something like white, 40-45 years old and middle class.

- There are less white people than ever and the trend is continuing that way

- 40-45 year old age is far too old for your average fan age especially considering that it is rising with time because they aren't attracting younger fans to the game to replace them

- The middle class is shrinking big time too. Corporations can still get the seats but those seats are to appeal to the "hot ticket in town" and if the other trends continue it will be less valuable.

I think as an investment, it's a good time to sell.

(Let's keep in mind this is from an article I read while eating a sub about a year ago, so my memory could be hazy)

UPDATE

Quote:
The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan is throwing cold water on reports it's looking to sell its share in the company that owns the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors and other sports teams.

Reports surfaced this week that Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI.B) was trying to buy the fund's 66 per cent share of the sports corporation that owns the NHL and NBA teams.

But the pension fund issued a statement Friday saying it is not in negotiations to sell its take of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

Well thank god, a corporation like Rogers running the sports teams in Toronto is a recipe for disaster.
