Please do not take my writing as a DeRozan bash piece; I just believe that there have been several players that have outstanding talents that have never reached their potential for various reasons like injuries, immaturity, and work ethic. Simply put we do not need to put DeRozan on a pedestal simply because he has all of this talent, and needs time to put it together.
Do you remember when players spent four years in College and came out more polished and ‘NBA-Ready’ than they do now? Why should we as fans get excited when we place our hopes on a 19-year old child that likely will take another three to four years to develop and may not resign with their original team?

Sorry I refuse to get excited what makes DeRozan more Vince Carter than Harold Miner? Is it because he has ‘the look’? Or because he was so utterly dominate in College? (He wasn’t) Until the Raptors display an aptitude in cultivating a winning culture that will enlist better players to come to Toronto, or convince current players to stay I do not believe that help is on the horizon. Chances are that by the time ‘the light’ goes on for DeRozan it’ll be back to square one for Raptor fans.

I think DeRozan is a steal at 9 but only time will tell us whether this is true.

That piece would have been spot-on if we had picked Jrue Holiday. Demar wasn't useless in college. He improved greatly as the season went on and became the leader on his team. He was the Pac 10 First Team All-Freshman, and Pac 10 Tournament MVP, beating out the likes of James Harden and Jordan Hill for the award. His team was rather mediocre but he took them to the tournament and averaged almost 20 ppg in the post-season.

I know we're hoping he pans out and becomes a really good player, but the hopes aren't far-fetched. DD showed signs of greatness in college. It's unfair to say he was picked only on potential.

There is actually a longstanding Toronto tradition of fans being disappointed before they even have anything to base their disappointment on.

And also a tradition of hyping up effect of every transaction and news.
9th pick in a weak draft, even if hes got immense potential, takes years to realise. As long as coaches whip him into doing right things and give playing time, its all good.

And this article is based in that. And saying he'll take 3-4yrs to developpe is just him pulling numbers out of his ass, and is based on nothing.

DeRozan could be like Gerald Green and i think he probably will be. Hopefully he develops quicker than most people think. I actually thought we should have picked up James Johnson or even tried to trade up to grab either Evans, Harden or Curry.

It's just not the kind of position that requires years to develop. He's either going to show something by the time the year is up, or he is going to be one of those guys that can't get it done. It's going to be all about having a well-defined role and accepting it. He's not coming in as green as a guy like Green, and he's on a team that is going to require him to not freelance as much as an immature player like that. So if he has an ounce of potential longterm, we'll see some of that translated this season.
