Swirsky: Raptors may pass on Marion to sign Turkoglu

From Chuck Swirsky's blog:

Quote:
Turkoglu ready to cash in: Hedo Turkoglu will opt out of his contract once the NBA Finals is over. He'll look at the landscape of free agency, hoping the Magic will go beyond the salary cap and sign him to a long-term deal. Orlando owner Richard DeVoss should be prepared to take the financial hit and pay him. The Magic need Turkoglu more than he needs Orlando. The Magic will open a new building in 2010-11 and in these economic times, especially with a new arena, it's important to fill the seats. With the Raptors clearing an additional $1 million off their cap thanks to the Jason Kapono-Reggie Evans trade, it appears they may look at Turkoglu to play the small forward position. Of course, that's presuming they'll pass on Shawn Marion and elect not to resign him.
Viable option if we don't re-sign Marion. But that also means we wouldn't S&T Marion, which i don't see happening at all. I just don't see BC renouncing Marion.

Marion>Turkoglu

Chuck is just an idiot. Even if Turkoglu is on the radar, letting Marion walk is stupidity. BC lets Marion walk, and he risks not even being able to sign Turkoglu. Most logical scenario is a sign and trade with Orlando both ways.

Turkoglu ain't that soft. He's not super tough either though, but it's not like it's enough of an issue to discourage us from acquiring him.

not that soft, so he's not tough

can't really tell about his rebounding ability b/c D12 grabs every other board
but he's not as good as Marion

Hes only worth 8-10 mil to the Magic because of the way they run their offence. On the Raptors he wouldnt be nearly as effective IMO, and he isnt the ideal guy to give 4 years to IMO.

They're different though. We want a guy who can create his own shot on the wing, and Marion can't do that. Turkoglu can. Hedo is generally a better playmaker than Marion in terms of making the right passes and what not.

You're obviously going to lose a little bit on defense as far as athleticism and rebounding go, but Turkoglu would fit in nicely. I think he's a little overrated playing next to Dwight, but still a solid player.

true......and Marion is way better on the defensive end.....and Hedo kinda reminds me of Bargs when he was plying the 3spot.......Marion>Hedo because of Marion defensive abilities....we need defense more than we need another playmaker....especially if we can get a sg in the draft......

It could happen as a S&T of Marion but otherwise it'd mean releasing pretty much everyone the Raptors have rights on (Delfino, AP, Joey) to sign Tork which would mean no bench depth.

I'd stick with Marion. Matrix proved he was a good fit with the Raptors, no reason to risk bringing in Tork who may or may not fit in.

Besides, do the Magic need more rebounding when they have Howard?

I like Turkoglu, but like Thriller said, I don't know how well he would fit with the Raptors.
Other than his playmaking ability, he doesn't fit any other need the Raptors have, particularly rebounding and defense.

I would rather have Marion, cuz he provides defense and best of all rebounding

Definately. Plus Marion doesn't need plays called for him.

While Turkey Glue is not as effective of a rebounder as Marion he's still fairly solid at around 5 a game. Marion doesn't really need the ball to score, which is a plus as it doesn't take away touches from Bosh/Bargs but I really do think that Marion's lack of a perimeter game would make the Raptors halfcourt offence a little more stagnant than usual. Turkoglu is much better at creating in those situations, and his outside game is definitely one of the better ones in the league.

You can't go wrong with either of them I don't think.

I agree.

I wouldn't mind swapping these two. Turk's outside shooting is definately something that Marion lacks. He can also drive in as well as create his own shot. His height at 6'10'' also gives him an advantage on both ends of the floor. Though we will miss Marion's better D and rebounding.

We could keep Marion and sign Turks

Just trade Bosh for a quality 2 guard

Jose
Shooting Guard
Turks
Marion
Bargs

Thats not a bad lineup
