SUN: Raptors won't overpay for upgrade at SF

It's fun, but not fair to blame Heat's failures on LeBron | Basketball | Sports | Toronto Sun

Itís no secret the Raptors are aggressively shopping for a talent upgrade at guard or small forward.

Memphis small forward Rudy Gay and Philadelphia swingman Andre Iguodala have long topped the wish list of the club and ESPN put fuel on the fire on Wednesday by reiterating as much.

However, according to sources, the report that the Raptors have been trying to package a young player like Ed Davis with the No. 8 selection and a veteran (Jose Calderon or Andrea Bargnani, according to the report) is not entirely accurate.

The Raptors are not inclined to both solve the salary cap problems of a team like Memphis by taking on Gay as well as surrendering that significant a package of assets and have let that be known.

The price would likely have to come down for Toronto to agree to a deal.

Yeah, this seems obvious. Good to see though.

Sure, but it means nothing since we are under the cap.

bosh's was, but there was also one from the barbosa deal.

moremilk 06-07-2012 01:44 PM

thanks god for that, that means we'll almost certainly keep our pick
let's better hope colangelo doesn't get distracted by the trade talk and focuses most of his efforts on the draft and not on trades.

If we fuck this up, the most responsible party will be the narrow minded MLSE who made the mind-boggling decision to have the GM's contract expire during a rebuilding phase. That creates the wrong incentive and Colangelo is impatient by nature, so it may be very hard for him to resist the temptation.

If he does resist though, my respect for him will go through the roof.

if we get iguy i would be please.
but it should better be for one vet + a young asset ot a pick not for all we have in tank to offer.

iguy + 15# for Bargnani + 2*2nd rd.

You just unloaded half of what's in your tank with that offer.

That would be a steal for the raps.

The MVP of West Hollywood 06-07-2012 03:33 PM

The endgame for our "not overpay" is something where we give up Kleiza, 8th, and Ed but Memphis throws back the 25th pick and Pondexter, and then we make some package deal with our 2nd where we get Austin Rivers or Damian Lillard, and then BC says that we basically gave up nothing because the diff in value between Rivers and 8th overall is practically nil

Does your cousin work for MLSE? :reporter:

Fuck the draft. And including #8 wouldn't be overpaying imo. And i still doubt we keep this pick if BC is serious about getting a player of this caliber.

It's BC - a wacky trade's going to happen.

shortcuts don't work, unless you're getting all stars, we're going to regret this.
say you have nash and igoudala for jose and davis and #8. Sure, we'll win 45 games, maybe 48. We'll definitely make the playoffs for the next 2-3 seasons and we may even win a round. And then nash will be 40 and igoudala 31 and bargnani almost 30. We'll have few young players outside JV and virtually no tradeable assets.

On the other hand, if we get two good players from the next two drafts, we could have a core of JV, Davis, Demar and two solid young guys paired with Bargnani and possibly cap space for two max free agents in 2013 if we play our cards right (amnesty and/or trade amir and kleiza for cap relief).

Now, which situation sounds more appealing to you?

trading bargnani for igoudala or gay makes no sense, the whole point of a trade like that is to make a push for the playoffs now. Having AI instead of Bargnani may give you 3-4 extra wins if that.

Anyway, I have this strong feeling that Colangelo is only to feel the market, the trade for AI would be pretty good because we get to keep a mid first rounder. He's probably looking for a bargain before the draft.

Worst outcome for the raps would be 9th place next season.
