Sun: Calderon Will Be Costly

[Captain Obvious]Did you guys hear? Jose's a RFA this summer and is going to command some big dollars. I don't think we can keep him. We're screwed. [/Captain Obvious] ;)

Talk to people in the NBA and they will tell you, off the record, of course, that the Raptors can't afford to have both Jose Calderon and T.J. Ford on the same roster come next season.

The bottom line is the bottom line with Calderon becoming a restricted free agent on July 1.

The Raptors have already stated they will match whatever offer is presented to Calderon, who is enjoying a break-out season, even at a time when his game has suffered in recent weeks.

Ford will make $8.3 million US next season. Calderon earns $2.5 million this year, but many believe he's in line for a raise that could quadruple his salary next year.

Besides the money, insiders insist Ford will not accept a long-term role as a backup.

what? I had no idea!

INSIDER 03-20-2008 01:40 PM

why do i have a terrible feeling BC will do a sign and trade....
i think he takes the easy way out in this scenerio...
if you think about it, it makes sense.
1. we solve the PG situation
2. we trade jose for a stud wing player

i'll bet money we trade jose to miami for the 1st round pick (beasley).
miami gets a allstar (he will be one next season) PG... and they DESPERATELY need a PG.
we get a promising SG/SF with allstar potential in BEasley.
throw in some fillers, its a done deal.

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 03-20-2008 01:41 PM

SHUT UP! Where'd this come from...left field??

Acie 03-20-2008 01:44 PM

Isnt' Beasley a PF?

I trust Colangelo will make the right decisions.

fho 03-20-2008 01:56 PM

Let the dice roll.

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 03-20-2008 01:57 PM

This is all Jose's fault! If he didn't suck so much in his rookie year BC wouldn't have had to trade for TJ making this controversy even and issue. Damn that spanish bastard ;) :D

Here's how the deal goes down:

To Miami:
Jose Calderon
Andrea Bargnani

To Toronto:
Mark Blount
Marcus Banks
Miami's 1st round selection

A lot of people won't want to give up Andrea, but it seems like he's struggling a lot and regressing to an extent. There's no real improvement this year. Miami get 2 players to put into the starting line up

Blount is a crappy player, but he needs to be added to make this deal work (I would rather have Udonis Haslem, but I don't think Miami would give him up that easily). Blount's contract ends at the end of the 09-10 season, just in time for the summer of '10 bonzanza for Colangelo. Plus he could be used as bait after next as an expiring contract.
Banks becomes a back-up PG for TJ.
and Toronto's own selection could turn out to be Thabeet from UConn, Hibbert from Georgetown, Arthur from Kansas.. or a pick that could be packaged for a bigman (Blount + 1st rounder to Philly for Dalembert?)

so, next season, you could see a line-up of:

C - Dalembert
PF - Bosh
SF - Beasley
SG - Parker
PG - Ford

Nice thought Hoops...(please change your name to Hoops)

My only problem is I am not sold on TJ being a PG that can get us to the next level...Jose and Bargs are my 2 favorite Raps, but I would still give them up for a good return, I am a Raps fan first. I would love Sammy D here...but TJ is an injury away from us not having a pG>

MangoKidHoops 03-22-2008 01:14 PM

i think TJ can become the player he was before the injury/set-back. He did average close to 9 assists a game last year. If we can get better scoring options (ie Beasley), TJ might not feel like he has to shoot, that he has options.

Miami wouldnt trade the Beasly pick for Calderon and Bargs alone, nevermind throwing in more. Ppl are overvalueing Calderon in trades, his value is going down by the min as his stats do, as of right now he has played great for about 1/4th of his career, its not enough to give up a player of Beasley's potential, who will come in the league and IMMEDIATELY and yes i mean right from the 1st game, be a better player then Bargs, and potentially a perenial all star to put beside Wade. No, i think Miami wouldnt do this.

Also, being in last gives them 25% chance at 1st pick, right? Why every post i see assumes they will win it? 75% of the time they dont.

Krazy Ivan 03-22-2008 09:45 PM

I still say that Raps should trade TJ to New York for Crawford... salaries match and this would be move similar move to Fred Jones for Juan Dixon... thing is that if you are moving flawed & high risk player, like TJ is, you will only be able to get flawed & high risk player in return... you weight the risk and hope that you can work on the flaws.

Also New York is still bad enough that it wouldn't hurt us much as if TJ ends up in Cleavland or Orlando.

The MVP of West Hollywood 03-22-2008 09:54 PM

I think NY turns that down, Crawford's been their best player this year. Plus they already have Robinson and Starbury. But then again, this is Isiah.

I maintain TJ playing on the Knicks would be gold though, if we could somehow make it happen.
