Thumbs up Summer '08 Players to Watch - Jose Calderon

Thank goodness for the Olympics this summer. Will definitely help with an actual basketball fix during the lull of the off-season.

Goooo Jose and Gooo Spain.

Ford for the Toronto Raptors, the 26-year-old Calderon averaged 11.2 points and 8.3 assists (fifth-best in the NBA) while posting a 5.38-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, the best in the League. In February he was considered one of the biggest All-Star Game snubs, and later helped lead the Raps to a second straight playoff berth. Calderon’s value was perhaps best displayed when Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo publicly stated in a mid-season ESPN podcast that the franchise would be more than willing to open up the checkbook and do whatever it took to keep Calderon, a restricted free agent this summer.

Between a healthy contract from Toronto or another NBA squad, and a medal shining gold, silver or bronze from Beijing, this should be an offseason full of riches for Jose Calderon.

I hope either Argentina or Spain beats the US when it matters.

I'd say if you gave them 2 years to play together like all the other teams they may win by 30 every game but I'm not so sure thats true because of all the egos involved. Melo, Lebron and Wade seemed to be only concerned about how much they shoot/score when playing in the olympics instead of making the easy/right passes, especially Melo and Lebron. Kobe bought into it, I dont get why those 2 schmucks havent yet.

USA basketball rules.

Period.

Thriller is right, it's the ego thing that kills them. And if you ask me, the selelction process id flawed, they should be bringing team guys and vets. They'd kill.

garnett, duncan, billups

guys like that.

One thing i hate about USA Basketball was when Jerry Colangelo and Mike Cyrz whatever said that it would be hard for the players to get accostumed to each other... hello they all play in the same league. All he had to do was pull them from the NBA, they all already know each other. Spain and Argentina are the two biggest threats, but the dark horse is Germany who has Dirk and now, Chris Kaman.

yeah, thats exactly what I mean, the egos kill them, I would take a thousand times a guy like Battier before Melo. Melo is better, but in a team full of scoring beasts a guy like battier would be awesome.
Im pretty sure they will win this year thanks to Kobe, but they should have tried to build a more balanced team.
Put duncan, Tayshawn, kobe, battier, billups, paul, etc..would be a true team.
In reality the only guysI cant stand there is Melo and lebron.

Yup, rapsfan087 sent this to me this morning.

Quote:
FRANKFURT, Germany -- Los Angeles Clippers center Chris Kaman has received German citizenship and will team up with Dirk Nowitzki for Germany at an Olympic qualifying tournament later this month.

Kaman, whose great-grandparents were German, averaged 15.7 points and 12.7 rebounds last season with the Clippers.

The 7-foot Kaman will add size to a German team seeking to qualify for its first Olympics since the 1992 Barcelona Games.

"We'll be stronger under the baskets with Chris," Nowitzki said Thursday.

The German team is practicing at home for a warmup tournament before it travels to Greece for the July 14-20 qualifying event in Athens.

"Chris is a significant addition and we'll now have to integrate him in time for the Athens tournament," coach Dirk Bauermann said."

If the USA doesnt win this one, theyre gonna be screwed for years to come too because itll be clear as day that the Melo/Lebron era of USA basketball cant get it done, and they cant go in a different direction because then the media would explode on them and the medias darlings wouldnt be pleased. Itd be awesome if they lost and they came right out and said we dont want these guys back because theyre selfish punks but that isnt gonna happen unfortunately.

The problem with USA basketball is that everyone on that team wants to be the guy. Look at the previous teams, of 92 and even 96 but 92 espescially. They had Magic, Larry, Karl, Charles, MJ, Isiah, Hak, Ewing etc. These were ALL guys who were THE guy on their teams. All are HOFers. But somehow they dominated the competition easily.

Now, I know, the competition today is more intense but I still examine that team and they played LIKE a team. Pride for the country went ahead of personal glory. But today, it's opposite and it's more of a cultural thing. It's more of a what can you do for me society and that's translate almost verbatim on the basketball court.

Well Garnett, Duncan and others don't want to play. I'm sure Jerry Colangelo would love to have them though. As guys get older, they have less desire to subject themselves and their families to serious basketball over the summer. The NBA season takes a pretty significant toll on 30+ year old guys.

But yeah, I agree, the selection process is too big name based. Besides Prince, the 2 and 3 positions are just loaded with scorers. Do they really need Lebron, Wade, Kobe and Melo? I mean, yeah they're all great, but Kobe's the only one who is above average defensively, and they're all amongst the most ball dominant players in the league. Plus they're going to keep Tayshaun off the floor, and he needs to be out there more often than not in my opinion.

It also pains me the Jason Kidd is going to be the starting point guard for this team. I love a savvy vet as much as the next guy, but his play has gone downhill in the past few years, not to mention his backups are the best in the league. Start Paul and make Billups the back up in my opinion.

Regardless of who's on the team, it's always the US's tournament to lose. I think they could field about 5 teams and those would still be the top 5 most talented teams in the tournament.

Also, given that it's pretty well acknowledged that the USA's problem is a bunch of huge ego's fueled by professional basketball success, why the hell do they have a college coach? Wouldn't it make more sense to have someone who is used to dealing with professional egos?

Face it.

Younger players are given the keys to the city nowadays.

The original dream team was full of vets. The young guys were bench players.

Nowadays it's about the new young face, and ALL about marketing.

Money talks.

Unfortunately a veteren teams walks.

Come on now, you don't think KG would be on the team if he wanted to be?

As for Billups, well, Kidd, Paul and D.Williams are just fine for that club.

Boom. Hit the nail on the head.

It's way easier to market an all star team than it is to market a solid but unspectacular team.

USA Basketball would be crucified for leaving any one of Lebron, Wade, Melo or Kobe off the roster, even though it doesn't really make basketball sense to carry 4 superstars at the same position.

While on the topic, has anyone seen the USA Basketball/Nike "conspiracy theory" that's being talked about with regards to the team picture? Dwight Howard, the only non-Nike sponsored player on the team, is the only player whose shoes aren't visible. It's actually pretty funny, regardless of whether it's true.
