Stein: Spurs Hoping to Land Bosh

That figure will come down slightly by opening night when the roster is pared to 14 or 15, but even so the Spurs will still sit more than $10 million above the NBA's $69.9 million luxury-tax threshold.

The organization's unspoken fantasy used to be stockpiling as much salary-cap space as possible for the ballyhooed summer of 2010 to chase Toronto Raptors big man Chris Bosh. As a Texan -- and a lefty like David Robinson -- Bosh seemed an ideal target to pair with Duncan in his twilight years, theoretically reprising the old twin towers effect in San Antonio, with Duncan cast in the Robinson role this time.

Apparently, every one needs Bosh except some overzealous Raptors fans. Really, how can you not want Bosh? Even teams with LeBron and Wade on payroll, won't mind to have Bosh riding along

at max contract, (taking into account that Bosh as a player has plateaued, which so many seem to think and say) Bosh is not worth the 22+ million a year. If he gets bigger, and improves his inside game, well.....thats another story

The Spurs want Bosh to play sidekick. The Cavs would want Bosh to play sidekick. The Heat would want Bosh to play sidekick. Getting the picture yet?

Wrong. Try again. And they want to pay him max money as well. Funny huh?

Gotta say that out of all the teams that have implied interest in Bosh so far, San Antonio seems the most likely to appeal to him, if winning is realy what he is after. When you think of winning organizations in the NBA, you think of the Spurs.

And if I can clarify things after reading the article in full - they had planned on landing Bosh, or opening up enough space in their payroll to attempt to - but they ended up not wanting to wait another year for that to happen after they disappointed last season. So it's extremely unlikely that they will be an option unless Jefferson decides he wants to opt out, and that ain't happening.

Spurs don't want him as a sidecick. They want him to play with Duncan in his "twilight years", which means he'll be there next generation PF, eventually taking over for Duncan. Duncan is 33.5 years old. Bosh would be their next leader, or at least one of them. At least that's what i got from reading that.

They would still have to pay him max money to lure him away! That's the point that was made..he's a max player...period.

We know he isn't the lebron/wade/kobe type of leader, but he's still a max contract guy in the current nba landscape and we have him! So let's keep him and figure out how to surround him with the best combination of players.

It doesn't matter if he is sidekick or not. They are willing to give him a max contract, which means <superstar>+Bosh will eat up most of the payroll.

Why you don't look from this point of view: sign Bosh and get another superstar (get deep into MLSE pockets) along with him to go for a championship?

If you don't give Bosh a max contract, somebody else is going to give to him. Do you know other superstar willing to play in Toronto for max contract and to be a better option then Bosh? Probably, you end up after you trade Bosh with a couple of first round picks and some old garbage, the same we got for Carter. And then you have to trade one of the first round pick to get rid of garbage and the other first round pick could be easily a new Joey Graham.

Maybe you're right, maybe not but this year will be a real telling year for Chris Bosh. I'm still on the fence.

i'm pretty darn sure that with parker, manu, rj and duncan under contract they don't have anywhere close to the room under the cap to sign a free agent of any calibre, let alone cb and his expected contract. Bosh is only going there if they can manage to shed at least one of those contracts (probably 2 or more) or in a trade. i suppose Bosh could agree to sign for the league minimum, but i hardly think there's any chance of that...

I'm not sure it matter if its true or not. Its not a realistic scenario.

If Bosh goes somewhere else next summer, it's more then likely going to be a S&T, which would be the only way SA could do it anyway.

so if you're buford and you're looking at your spurs team, and you realize that you need to give up at least one of parker or manu+rj (we'd be nuts to do this deal for just manu or just rj), does that not pretty much make you decide not to go after bosh? a team with td and cb, but no pg or no wings wouldn't be nearly as strong as their current lineup, imo.
