Raptors Stein: Raptors contemplating making a pitch for VC

This wouldn't shock me, but not sure it would be the right move.

Quote:
2. If we're reading No. 1 correctly, Dwane Casey did enough to get a contract extension. Right?

Yes.

Yes, indeed: You read it right. And, yes, it's hard to muster any sort of argument against Casey ultimately getting a new contract.

Everyone remembers that Raptors GM Masai Ujiri inherited Casey, so the season began with most coaching insiders expecting Ujiri to be on the hunt for his own man by now.

But Toronto's turnaround -- and the way Casey connected with Lowry after more than one coach before him tried and failed -- has spawned the expectation around town that he'll ultimately score, at worst, a new two-year extension.

4. What will the Raps be missing even if they get those two deals done?

They obviously need continued development from Jonas Valanciunas and Terrence Ross, for starters, but the Raptors clearly need more size to be a viable playoff contender.

More length, more toughness and an injection of speed in the backcourt or on the wings wouldn't hurt, either.

Quote:
5. Any offseason surprises in store from the Raps?

There's a pretty tasty free-agent scenario in circulation ... if it comes to fruition.

Word is that the Raptors have been kicking around the idea of making a free-agent play this summer to try to bring Vince Carter "home" by trying to sign the former face of the franchise away from the Mavericks.

It would be cool i guess, but hes old.. I wonder how the players would react to it as well. Hate to say it cause i think Salmons is a good guy but VC is a huge upgrade.

Salmons is as good as gone cuz of his contract situation so who cares if he's a good guy.

VC for the bi-annual?

I believe it's just under 2mil/yr?

2yrs/4mil?

Btw, with the salary cap going up 5mil does that mean the various exceptions go up? Might be a stupid question but I was just wondering how that works.

Need more defensive oriented players. Hopefully they think this is also for our winning culture and not just a stunt.

VC is one of the biggest bargains right now... I hope we get him, and not for publicity's sake.

Is he though. I won't pretend to say I've watched him a lot, but whenever I have, he's absolutely shit the bed. He's seemed a chucker, who can't score. He also seems too slow to play any legit defence on the wings.

Nope. Only max salaries are tied to the salary cap. Exceptions are pre-set values.

He'd have been useful in the playoffs vs nets. And against anyother big SF. If he'd come here as a bench player replacing salmons or starter for Ross when he chokes, I'll be happy. Yea he's old but casey loves old people lets get an old person who can play unlike rasul butler or salmons.

No thanks. The VC story wouldn't fit with the identity the team has built.

Even though that article says we need size/length/speed, another shortcoming of our team is lack of veteran leadership.

Oak did it back in the VC days. Ironic if VC came back to provide it.

VC has been playing well and has been saying the right things. I don't want old VC back to pretend Vinsanity is back. I'd take new VC for all that he can offer our young players.

Is VC really a veteran leader?

I'm not sure that this is the right fit unless we're assigning value to the nostalgia factor. I would sign him to a one year contract if we weren't able to sign a better player. Need to keep as much cap space free as possible for 2015.

Why not? Brings us a veteran wing who can still play, had a solid playoffs.

Would have been nice to have him put up those numbers with Ross' struggles.

yea.. and still more athletic then allot of dudes in NBA, vince ads some size, veteran leadership and can easily stretch the floor with his 3pt shooting.

Bring him back

I still like VC but he shouldn't be part of the Raptors future after what he did to the team. IMO he would be just a marketing gimmick but in the end a distraction to the real core and direction to the team.
