Stein: Raps to replace BC with Embry/Raps deny report

Quote:

The working assumption in Canada is that Colangelo, with the draft just two months away, will be in charge of the Raptors' war room June 23 on draft night despite the fact that his contract expires June 30. There are likewise plenty of observers who believe Colangelo, given his experience dealing with changes to the league's economic system and his overall body of work in both Phoenix and Toronto, deserves at least one more season to run the point on Toronto's post-Chris Bosh rebuild.

However ...

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com this week that the Raptors do have a backup plan if the current management -- at the urging of staunch anti-Colangelo board member Glen Silvestri -- decides it's best to make an immediate change. Or a change after June 30.

One possibility management is considering, sources said, is naming Raptors special advisor Wayne Embry as interim GM. In that scenario, Embry and longtime Raptors scouting director Jim Kelly would then either be asked to oversee Toronto's draft in Colangelo's place, or Embry would simply become interim GM as of July 1.

Embry, 74, has already served as interim GM for the Raps once before, taking temporary charge of the team's basketball operations in January 2006 from the ousted Rob Babcock -- even making two trades before the trade deadline that season -- before Colangelo was hired on Feb. 28, 2006.

If Silvestri is successful in blocking Colangelo's extension and the Raptors go the interim route, Embry and Kelly would be entrusted with deciding whom to select with Toronto's expected top-three pick ... or whether to trade it. But with a lockout looming July 1, most basketball business after that would soon be on hold anyway.

Woooow..... and so the downfall of the franchise continues.

jeffb 04-20-2011 03:54 PM

What a bunch of bullshit!!

EggsToTheBBQ 04-20-2011 03:56 PM

I can't say how much I want the Raptors to re-sign Colangelo.

The franchise post Bosh is in much better shape than the franchise post Carter. Colangelo is a big part of that.

Also, I think it says a lot about the fan base that we're still behind Colangelo, and that we can see some good things in the future for the roster he's put together.

EggsToTheBBQ 04-20-2011 03:59 PM

And, given that the interests Silvestri represents aren't a part of the future of the franchise, they should have no say in these decisions.

jeffb 04-20-2011 04:00 PM

Can this guy seriously block him being re-signed? Asshole!

Blaze 04-20-2011 04:04 PM

This is ridiculous, the only reason I see that they don't want to rehire BC is cause of money, obviously they're not looking to get anyone better. This offseason might make or break Toronto and they want to give it to an interim :dead::dead:. I hate MLSE, I hope someone buys them.

We are doomed.

This is such bullshit.... BC needs to be resigned... something has to be done..

JDMtors 04-20-2011 05:16 PM

Wth people can block BC to be resigned? Silvestri sure has a problem with him. I'll really like to see him work with the young core he brought in to Toronto..... Having a new GM might be stupid since he might trade all of our players and try to win

JDMtors 04-20-2011 05:25 PM

dont wanna sound stupid but who is, Glen Silvestri?

Fuck the teachers, get rid of them so we can re-sign BC already.

JDMtors 04-20-2011 05:40 PM

What does a freaking teacher have to do with deciding the future of BC as the GM of the raptors. Man this is just plain stupid. Someone should just show him to Ben Wallace

MLSE is up for sale, and potential buyers may not want to step in to a situation that has a GM (that may or may not be in favour) with a long-term contract. Many new buyers want to see things done their way. According to the OTPP, they care only about money, and having a GM who is signed to guaranteed money may be a disincentive to someone else buying the controlling majority of the team.

Regardless, it's a horrible situation for BC. I just hope it gets resolved. BC has made mistakes, yes, but he is on the right path now, and I think he should have the opportunity to finish what he has started.

Perfectly explained.

Just in case you had any notion left that the ownership of this team cares more about money than anything, here is an ownership that on its way out realizes they can get more money on th sale without a big contract GM on the books. Bottom line.
The books look different with a vacant GM position or with some rookie GM at the time of sale. 1.49 billion instead of 1.5 billion on the sale is waaaaaay too much to put up with no matter what happens to the team.

Too bad we don't have a strong fan organization here. We could negate the difference in the sale price caused by that kind of manipulation by screaming high and low that whoever buys should know that they are cooking the books.

LX 04-20-2011 07:02 PM

At the end of the day - whatever it takes to get the sale through, and a s quickly as possible. This isn't the kind of shit that comes easy. Once it's done we're looking at ownership with a greater incentive to win, and not just put bums in seats. And that could have a much greater impact than anything Colangelo might be able to do.

BC+MLSE was pretty useless. It would be nice to see him have a shot with another prospective owner, and by the kinds of things he was saying on Monday, it's possible that he was making a pitch to a possible ownership that was wary of past results. He seemed pretty bent on being open and honest and showing his ability to handle the prpcess he has begun.

Two things....

1. What if we end up with a dink of an owner who sees MLSE as a money making vehicle first....i.e. this is one of the few NBA money makers, so hire a cheap-ass GM and pocket the change. If Colangelo already has a contract in place, you don't have a puppet to try only to get you between 8th and 10th place every year, keeping bums in the seats. hmmmm Quebec teachers fund? Three legged hobbits pension plan?

2. Colangelo does have some pride, self respect and common sense. Hang him out there to dry too long and a team that is not so concerned about profit- New York? - snatches him up and we are left with fast-talking Bob the rookie GM who needs to learn the ropes at $750,000/yr.
