Raptors Stein: Lowry is likely next

Quote:
The Toronto Raptors, according to the latest chatter in circulation after Sunday's shedding of Rudy Gay, are by no means done making moves between now and the Feb. 20 trade deadline.
Quote:
The Raptors, meanwhile, have been expected to be active in the trade market since the season began, with ESPN.com reporting as far back as Nov. 1 that everyone on the roster apart from prized center Jonas Valanciunas had been made available. New Raptors front-office boss Masai Ujiri has managed to trade away Andrea Bargnani and now Gay over the last six months to create financial flexibility going forward and -- with Toronto apparently to determined it avoids any accidental success in the Atlantic Division -- is said to be happy to surrender veteran point guard Kyle Lowry next. The priority in Toronto is clearly finishing as high as possible in the lottery with Canadian sensation Andrew Wiggins and several other top prospects expected to be available to teams picking at the top of the June draft. Lowry is in the final year of his contact at a very affordable $6.2 million and believed to be eminently available because he's not part of Toronto's future plans.

if we do trade him it would be for apick, i mean, he is an expiring. worst case scenario just let him be a free agent if we cant get a pick for him

Don't expect the Lowry/Hayes/Patterson reunion to be a long one.
It's for the best. Package him with Amir and get a backup C and 15-20 first rounder

I'm just hoping we can find a way to get another 1st rounder without having to give up either DD or Amir. If we have to then so be it, but I'd prefer to keep them and let them build with the new upcoming draft picks that we are going to select.

With Nash out for awhile, and Steve Blake and Jordan Farmer at PGs, and the Lakers trying to win now with Kobe on the roster, maybe they surrender their mid 2014 first round pick. Its hard to surrender a first round pick in a deep 2014 draft especially for a rental player for six months. Maybe Masai waits it out and some point guard goes down on a contending team, teams get more desperate and would be more willing to surrender their first round pick.

Chatter in circulation. That means very little. The only thing I'm counting on is getting maximum value and/or the ability to improve options and increase options going forward. The chatter likely has no idea what path will be taken or what kind of timeframe will be involved. It is just chatter.

I find it a little bit amazing that people can get paid circulating chatter amongst themselves and then using it as something that can be reported on and affirmed as something meaningful. I mean we do that here for free. Time to take it to the streets and demand a fair wage!

Maybe this is stupid, but I've never understood why you can't trade a pick twoce, what I mean is let's say we traded our 2014 pick to the wizards and it was litter protected, I don't see why we then can't trade it to Phoenix with it being there's if it falls in the lottery

the league wants to make sure that young prospects move through every team, and that the big spenders don't just use pick trades to hold on to star veterans, and that they eventually have to do some rebuilding like everyone else. forcing teams to pick in the first round every other year is part of that. so, from that basis, you can't trade the lottery protected pick this year and then just complete the other trade later because they might fall in back to back years.

It's because of the Stepien rule - a rule that prevents teams from trading their first rounder in two consecutive years. It protects teams from particularly inept GMs.

Anyway, the scenario you describe is illegal because when a pick falls within it's protection, the team still owes a pick, it just gets bumped back a year. So, let's say a team has traded it's 2014 1st rounder, lotto protected. Your scenario would have them trade their 2014 1st rounder, but reverse-lotto-protected, to another team.

So, if it lands 15-30, the pick goes to Team A.
If it lands 1-14, the pick goes to Team B.

Here's the issue. Let's say the pick lands 8th. Team B gets the pick. The pick debt to Team A gets bumped back to 2015. But the next year, the team gets better and makes the playoffs. Their 2015 pick lands at 18th. So the pick goes to Team A.

The team traded a pick in two consecutive years. So this scenario is illegal.
