Raptors Stein: Latest on Nash

Quote:
Nash himself, I’m told, is still days away from giving his future deep thought. He said many times late in the regular season that he’ll listen to any pitch that comes this summer, hoping that the next contract he signs -- preferably for three seasons -- will be his last. But he admitted last month at a press conference in Toronto that he hadn’t even started the process.

More, then, is known about the teams chasing Nash. It’s a list that still starts with the Phoenix Suns, who cling to the hope that they can keep the most beloved player in franchise history, but it’s also destined to be a longer list than you think once free agency actually starts, since Nash is seen around the league as far more gettable than D-Will.

Sources briefed on the matter told ESPN.com that the three teams with salary-cap space best positioned to make a credible run at the 38-year-old, at this early juncture, are Portland, Toronto and Brooklyn (should the Nets lose D-Will).

New York and Miami are also frequently mentioned as potential Nash destinations, but neither the Knicks nor the Heat have the requisite cap room to make a serious bid. The Blazers, by contrast, have coveted Nash for years in trades and will finally have the financial flexibility to chase him, offering the closest proximity to Nash’s Vancouver roots than anywhere else on the NBA map among other perks. Sources say that the Raptors, meanwhile, will be determined suitors in the Nash Sweepstakes, with a serious offer forthcoming to try to bring the newly installed general manager of Canada’s national team back to home soil after 16 seasons south of the border with the Suns and Mavericks.

Also: CSNChicago.com reported Sunday that the Chicago Bulls intend to join the Knicks and Heat on the list of glamour teams that will take a long-shot run at Nash. You can go ahead and put Dallas in that club, too, should the Mavericks fail in their attempt to bring DFW-area native D-Will home.

The New York Daily News, furthermore, reports that the Suns plan to “go all out” for Williams if they end up losing Nash. The safest forecast of them all: This won’t be the last story that mentions both Williams and Nash, since they’re two of the certifiable stars -- albeit at vastly different stages of their career -- in a free-agent class with precious few of them.

Toronto, Portland and PHX probably have the best shot...

Portland - Nash is already old .. I think he'd want a healthy 3 seasons if those are his last...

PHX - They have no talent to surround Nash with currently...

Toronto could edge out the others as the best destination for him if he's not seeking a ring..

Can't believe no one brings up Indy like, at all. With Indy Nash would just have to pass the ball to George, Granger, West and Hibbert. Nash, George, Granger, West and Hibbert isn't a bad starting lineup

Do we really want Nash? I feel like someone younger would benefit us more.

I wouldn't mind Nash here although it wouldn't be the end of the world if he didn't suit up for the raps.

nash or even better, deron, would be amazing in Indiana. They are desperately lacking a PG and with deron they could be the #1 team in the east if they retain all their players and add a bench scorer like crawford.

the problem is, if they don't get deron or nash, they're fucked - their cap space will be eaten by hibbert and then all the other rookies they have. It's their last change to get a high powered FA.

which bring an interesting point, they may be able to get gordon in which case granger becomes expendable (george can move to SF) and we may be able to get granger in a package around Jose. Not a big fan myself, but those who are eager to win now would probably welcome the idea. Add Nash to replace Jose and you have a playoff team easily.

Indy value Granger a lot.

Speaking of Jose, here is something I found written by someone on Bleacher Report, granted - I know it's an opinion and not an actual report/news, etc - but it is an interesting idea.

Utah Jazz: Jose Calderon Should Be Main Target This Offseason | Bleacher Report

After getting swept in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs, the Utah Jazz must make some adjustments if they want to reach the second round next year. Devin Harris did not have a strong season for the Jazz last year, so Utah should consider upgrading at point guard. One player they should consider is Jose Calderon.

Jose Calderon has been with the Toronto Raptors his entire career. But with Toronto focusing on defense with new coach Dwane Casey, Calderon is expendable. While not great defensively, Calderon is great at distributing the ball (8.8 assists per game last season) and is a good all-around shooter.

The Jazz have a $10.9 million trade exception from the Mehmet Okur trade that expires in December. Calderon makes just over $10.5 million next season, so the deal works perfectly for both sides. The Jazz will get the point guard they need to get past the first round of the playoffs, and Toronto has a trade exception they can use on a small forward.

While Jazz fans may be concerned about adding another salary, Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson and Devin Harris all have expiring contracts next year, making them attractive pieces in the trade market. Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors will continue to improve, making one of their high-earning big men expendable. Teams are always looking for a backup point guard, so Harris will not be a struggle to trade either.

Calderon will make the Utah Jazz a better team. He is a great shooter and, more importantly, will elevate the play of other players on the team. The Jazz must use their trade exception this offseason, and it would be a mistake if it wasn’t used on Jose Calderon.

We know BC has been all about maintaining cap flexibility (hence why he wanted no salary whatsoever coming back for LB).

LOL ... just because he's Canadian doesn't mean we should desperately sign him. Calderon can get the job done, all we need is a young PG that values a pass-first mentality than those attention-seeking And1-esque PGs.

I like Marshall but I'm worried he'll be like Jose with a worse/non existent shot

his being canadian is the only reason we have a chance to, but the reason we would sign him is because he's been a stud PG for a long time and would be our best player immediately... that's reason enough to sign him.

Well, IMO, he's too high for the 8th pick, I'm hoping towards getting Lamb. We could aim for Scott Machado in the 2nd round.

Yes, he's a stud but I don't think we should overspend to an aging player like Nash. Getting a quality SF should be our main priority.

I agree with you on that, especially given how well Jose played this year.

On premise I agree with you but he has and has stated 3 years and he's done. he's 38 with a wonky back on a team thats young and rebuilding. To me that contradicts any reason to have him here.
