Star power.

For all the talk about a team not needing a star and not needing a "face of the franchise", Raptors fans, and ball forums would say otherwise.

We said we wanted to see young, athletic guys get after it and see the team built properly and many said that marketing a star is nonsense.

Seems to me that if you want interest in your team, the order of importance is:

1) win
2) get a star
3) sell hope for the future
4) athleticism

I'll say this. The Clippers have a worse record and less chance of making the playoffs than we do. But if Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon where here, there wouldn't be so many talking about losing interest and the forums would be jumping.

LOL

If Gordon & Griff were on our team we would be a top 4-5 team in the east & no one would want to play us!

Jose/Bayless/Barbosa
Gordon/Barbosa/Weems
DeRozan/Kleiza/Wright
Griffin/AJ/Dorsey
AB/ED

Sick!

This is why we tank this season and get Irving! :dancing:

How many Griffins are there out there? I can't expect to see a player like that land here. If one does - then fantastic. But I would personally be happy to see a well-balanced team playing complete games of basketball. I'm actually hungrier to see that than to see any individual greatness.

I understand your point and in the obvious ways, that may be safer for this franchise. But we're starting to show a bit of our true colours as a fan base. There are precious few Griffins. We have good fans in Toronto considering, but it gets clearer what the most important things are for this fan base in terms of interest.

Why would you want Gordon and Barbosa? Both are 6-3 not too much of a variety. I'd say one of the shooting guards should be at least 6-5.

so i'm guessing we'll be trading our picks, reggie evans, uhh ronald dupree, and more picks? :confused2:

Put around better 2-way players, Bargnani could be our star (See @knicks). I think well be ok drafting solid talent with a say 6-11 pick for a few years and getting very solid players if we dont get a start talent with a top 3 pick.
Plus I think if we get a solid starting small forward ala Iggy or Jeff Green it will help us a lot.

i dont know if its fair to peja to let him rot on the bench here, when he can really help light it up for a contender.

If it were up to me hed probably be our starting 3

He's still injured I think

no one inherits the "superstar status" you earn it.

Peja's hurt.

As for Star Power - all of the good teams have it, but all of the best teams not named Miami (or Boston) acquire that talent through the draft.

Bargnani and DeRozan look like pretty decent pieces to build around, but if we can stink this season and get a top 3 pick, those two plus our pick would be a nice core to build around.

Nah.

In basketball you only have two good situations.... competing for a conference shot.... or coming last.

Ok Teams Stay ok for a long time.

You also have Davis that you can possibly build around :) You then would have a C, PF, and SG to build around. In my opinion, we have good upcoming players like Bayless, DD, Weems (maybe), Amir(...maybe), Davis, and Bargs. If anything, we need to draft someone for fill the 3 spot.

Ammo 01-02-2011 11:59 PM

It is starting to look like the pick will be a 3 or a 1, doesn't it? There aren't too many Bargnanis around and the draft does not look promising for centres. We're startting to see that Derozan is not a stiff, there is promise with more seasoning in Amir and Davis, I can't say I'm horrified with Calderon and Bayless at 1, it's just Jose's salary.

What I was describing would be better than an OK team. I specifically pointed to a situation where they were competing.

Having a superstar doesn't mean you're going to be better than OK. Miami was OK or worse for many years, with one of the best players in the league. So was LA. It's being balanced and complete and being able to dictate play every night that made those teams successful. The Spurs right now do not really have a legitimate superstar, unless you think Duncan still fits that bill. And lookie lookie - the best team in the league.
