Spurs have interest in Calderon?

The Toronto Raptors are expected to offer unrestricted free agent Steve Nash a lot of money. That number could be upwards of $12 million per year. If Nash agrees to terms with the Raptors, it’s likely they amnesty the final year of Jose Calderon’s contract (worth $10.6 million).
Calderon, 30, is one of the most effective passers in the entire league, assisting on a gaudy 44.2% of Toronto’s possessions. Picking his spots in the defense is an intricate part of Calderon’s game.
He can shoot from the perimeter at a reliable rate and he’s an excellent free throw shooter as well. At this stage of his career Calderon is heavily reliant on his mid-range shot. A shade over half of his field goal attempts came from mid-range (he converted on 45% of these shots).
The problems with Calderon: defense and injuries. Injuries have sapped his effectiveness. Calderon has missed an average of 14 games per year since the 2007-08 season where he played 82 games.
Calderon’s defensive ineptitude stems from his lack of lateral quickness. He allowed opposing point guards to accumulate a 17.8 PER. He also allowed them to attempt more than a fourth of their shots from at the rim. Without Calderon on the floor there is a noticeable improvement in Toronto’s defense. They allow 97.8 points per 100 possessions; a number that increases to 104.4 when Calderon is on the court. For reference, Toronto defended at an elite level akin to the Boston Celtics. They are average defensively otherwise.
The Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in Calderon as well. If the Spurs sign Calderon the Tony Parker scenario (once again) is muddled. Do they trade Parker? Or do they find a way to give them both significant minutes? It wouldn’t hurt to alleviate Parker’s workload but is it worth downgrading defensively? As always predicting the Spurs’ next move is impossible.
So what do you think Spurs fans? Would signing Jose Calderon be a good move for the Spurs?

Jose would be a nice backup for TP

There isn't anything in this that suggests the Spurs are in fact interested. It seems like a blogger speculating an awful lot.

Paul jones this morning said the spurs have interest. not sure who his source(s) are though.

I heard 3 days ago that the Spurs were interested, the lakers are as well.

Like I said, it's just moronic Raptor fans that don't like Jose Calderon.

Shifty.py 07-02-2012 12:22 PM

A lot of teams are interested in Calderon if he is amnestied
But not many would take his full contract. It would be a mistake to amnesty him, he has value as a player, we need to be patient

of course they'd be interested he wouldn't be owed his 10Mil contract. He's a MLE PG (Backup on a very good team). I'd take him as a backup at that price.

True

I can kinda see this as being half true.
He's expiring, so if he breaks down and doesn't provide to his potential they don't need to worry about it, plus the FA class next year is also really good and that opens up space without any effort.

I'd say 90% chance he's traded instead of amnestied.

Superjudge 07-02-2012 12:31 PM

If we had Nash, I wouldn't want him as the back up. I think he's a starter, and really, you can't have two vets, it makes no sense to me UNLESS you are on the doorstep for a title.

If he goes, wherever he does I really hope its to a real team that plays proper ball

So nobody would take his full contract, but we shouldn't amnesty him? Isn't that a reason TO amnesty him?

MrClutch 07-02-2012 12:36 PM

Jose has value and he has an expiring contract, all we have to do is find someone who wants him and get something back in value that helps this team out

A starter on SOME teams sure. I would say he's a certain starter on about 8-10 teams. I think he'd be great in LAL. But when you look around the league even the shitty teams like Washington (much improved mind you), Cleveland, Minnesota, Memphis he wouldn't be the starter. I also think he would be great in Sacramento with Evans at SG.

I'll tell you right now, if it's a choice between keeping Calderon or signing Lin......i'm on team Jose all the way.

JoeyJoJo Shabbadu 07-02-2012 01:10 PM

Calderon will be a great player somewhere else. Calderon's problem isn't his bad defense. Unfortunately Calderon's problem is Bargnani and DD's bad defense PLUS his bad defense. One them has to go and something has to give. And it's not Bargs... and somehow it's not DD... yet. So jose get's the short end. Good player, like him alot, teams just sin't built to hide his deficiencies.

And if 3 teams are publicly interested, then more are quietly. which means they won't have to amnesty him, they will trade him.

Dallas is looking for a 1 year from Nash, if it doesn't happen, you trade Jose to Dallas for Marion. Amnesty Amir.

Now you are looking decent.

Nash
Ross
Marion
Barg
JV

1 year? Who says this?

Raptors1995 07-02-2012 01:41 PM

If he's amnestied, almost every team would be interested in having him; at a minimum as a back up point guard who will give you a solid 20 minutes. I wish we some how get rid of him like the clippers did Williams.

Reports have stated they wont give Nash more then 2.
Maybe the 2nd isn't guaranteed either?
Who knows.

The Mavericks reportedly are only interested in giving Nash a huge one-year contract, or a smaller two-year package, while the Indiana Pacers also have shown some interest.

Shrug.

Gurk 07-02-2012 03:42 PM

I really hope we don't amnesty him. Hopefully we can trade him away, he only has a year left and some team will want him for sure. Amnesty Amir if anything

Dario 07-02-2012 04:25 PM

Some teams would take his contract if they could, I mean its just 1 year.

Toby 07-02-2012 08:09 PM

Don't deal wiht the Spurs. They have a knack of turning gold into lead when you make trades with them. That's why they got so good. Manipulating other teams into thinking this kid in San Antonio has a bright future but we just have no room for him. Let's make a deal.
