Sporting News: 5 Players primed for a breakout year

Quote:
Andrea Bargnani, C, Raptors. Bargnani benefited from a coaching switch. In his third season, he thrived with coach Jay Triano after wilting under the criticism of Sam Mitchell, who wanted Bargnani—a 7-footer with a great 3-point shot—to play more like a traditional center. "The thing with Andrea —I think you have to let him be who he is," Triano says. "You would like more rebounding, more defense, more of those things. But you have to emphasize the positive, too."

You forgot...

Quote:
Amir Johnson, PF, Bucks. Johnson has talent, but getting him to use that talent on the floor was a challenge in Detroit, especially because the Pistons were trying to contend in the Eastern Conference. Now, heading into his fifth season after being drafted out of high school, Johnson is in Milwaukee with the rebuilding Bucks and tough-minded coach Scott Skiles. Oh, and he will become a free agent next summer. If ever there were a perfect opportunity for Johnson to show he belongs in the NBA, it has arrived. "We think he has a lot of potential," Bucks general manager John Hammond says. "But, to be honest, he needs to show it."

Might as well not have Johnson on that list since he will be fighting for playing time in Toronto.

True, but the list was put out before AJ was traded to Toronto. Who knows, maybe he works to the point where he's the first Big off the bench.

Actually, the list was made one day after the trade and the writer was misinformed. But you're right, he could work his way to being the first big man off the bench.

I agree with the above, Amir has the potential to be the first big off the bench, but it is unknown if he will reach that potential. I want to see him in a couple of games before i assess him.

Yeah, I heard he's been working pretty hard though. Let's hope for the best, though I think I would perfer Evans experience off the bench over Johnson right now, until we start to stay proven, then we take the chance on Johnson.

Bargnani's season is going to be deemed a "breakout year" because of stats when in reality he was playing that well in the second half of last season. I think of it as right after the Vince Carter trade when Bosh suddenly started posting numbers. Well, that was not viewed as a "breakout" because his season averages weren't amazing even though the second half of that season he was posting all-star worthy numbers. Next season he posts the same numbers as the second half of the prior season and suddenly he's having a "breakout year" solely because of his season averages. It all boils down to stats and how they're viewed. Stats is a wonderful tool to use but stat's should not be the only source of any proclamation on talents, skills and abilities.

So he wilted under criticism, and now he is going to break out because he's not going to get the criticism, or I guess it is going to be handed out to him as though he were a pre-schooler?

I don't see where the guy gets anywhere without criticism period. Just like anybody else.

In the second game of the season last year, the guy scored 19. A couple of weeks later he tore it up again, but as a SF. His success had less to do with coaching directly than it did with just getting minutes. He'll get even better with more experience this season. Hard to figure huh?

Obviously. He can get into the 20s for ppg and possibly 1.5 bpg. I predict 19.5 ppg, 7rpg, and 1.5 bpg.

He's going to be close to 20PPG. In terms of rebounding its pretty difficult to tell. If he grabs six per game that's a big overall improvement from last season.

It's going to be Hakim Warrick. His per 36 numbers the last 3 years have been 17/7. Now he's going to play 35mpg at PF for the Bucks and will be like the #1 option if Redd is out half the year. Pick up Warrick on your fantasy teams

Tyrus Thomas will be big as well. The West to Rose's Paul. Amare to his Nash. Kemp to his GP. In theory as a huge athletic finisher who can shoot from midrange, the Rose/Thomas pick and roll should be devastating
