Raptors Sources: Raptors Open To Trading Calderon

Weekend Dime -- Views From The Professional Watchers - ESPN

Quote:
The Raptors are not shopping Jose Calderon, but would be open to trading him in the right deal, sources say.

In a recent interview with Marca, Calderon didn't deny that he'd "like to have the opportunity to compete for something."

That doesn't mean he's poised to ask for a trade -- "I don't think so, that's not me, that's not my personality," Calderon said -- but the 30-year-old left the undeniable sense that he wouldn't oppose a move away from the rebuilding Raptors if the opportunity materializes.

Quote:

Sources with knowledge of Toronto's thinking say that the team is not just going to give Calderon away, especially when he's back to supplying a typically efficient 10.6 points and 8.7 assists nightly, but I'm told that the Raps are indeed open to moving him.

That's because shedding Calderon's nearly $11 million salary for next season would be another step in the reset that began with Bryan Colangelo's drafting of Jonas Valanciunas in June and the hiring of the defensive-minded Dwane Casey as the new coach. It's an open secret north of the border that the Raptors, as much as they've loved Bargnani's increased production and honest attempts to try harder on D under Casey, won't be heartbroken if their 2011-12 record nets another prime pick in the next draft.

The biggest obstacle to a Calderon deal between now and the March 15 trading deadline is that the Raps would surely want a point guard in return, which would appear to rule out teams looking for point guards -- like the Lakers and Knicks -- unless a third or fourth team joins in. Another option for Toronto, if shedding Calderon's salary is needed for cap space this summer, is merely releasing him via the amnesty clause in the NBA's new labor agreement since the Raps didn't use it before this season.

Yes finally!

Send him to a talented team in need of a distributor like:

Calderon for Shumpert + Knick's First Rounder

Calderon for Ebanks + Laker's First Rounder

Calderon for Nelson + Orlando's First Rounder

We could really use another first round pick...

I`ll take none of those options for a thousand Alex.

Ryan Wolstat had a nice comment on twitter today that this isn`t anything new. They`ve been trying to move him for about two years now.

I don`t think we need a PG for him back. I can`t think of a lot of teams that would really need him right now.

I think now's a good time to move Calderon. He's not going to get better than what he is showing right now. Plus, he's performing up to his potential- able to rack up an efficient double-double game- without the injuries. If we are going to get the most value for him, it would be now.

And I'm with Claudius, we don't need a returning point guard. At this point of the season, it is evident that we are not competing this season. We might as well get a better option at point guard during the off season with a go at free agency. In addition, it doesn't make sense for a team to give up a point guard to get Calderon; any takers for Jose would probably look for help at the PG position.

Agreed! Especially about the injuries thing... He's healthy right now, but if his hammy goes down (anti-jinx), so does his trade value again.

Ideally, I'd trade Jose + a piece, for a young PG prospect and an expiring and/or low draft pick.

Oh, I guess I should mention, too, that if we don't trade him - even next year - and we don't get Nash (I'd love to see him pull a "Magloire"), I'd like to keep Jose as a backup and mentor to a younger PG that will eventually take over the reins. I'd just like to sign him back to a cap-friendly contract.

This is a very sensitive area in my books. I have watched our team play right from day 1. We will never win anything if players never want to stay in Torinto. Calderon really wants to stay in Toronto so why would you want to trade him ? Caldy is a differant breed hes all team its not about him. We keep loosing our best players now we have a guy that wants to stay and we might be trading him. If Caldy actually wants out then let him go hes put his time here. Not..... let him feel that hes part of the movement and guys will see dedication to the organization...he would stay play hard and continue to shine.
Trying to land a top pick wont do much more for us ...it would give the drafted player a chance to play right away and let him develop only to see him leave. There is no mind set here to win and spend and get top players.

All we talk about is the team defence and offence.....this organization has to get players that want to stay here and the organization has to spend and get those right players. If the mind set regarding getting players to stay does not change all we will ever have here is d league organization breaking in the new players only to see them leave.

@raptor123 : maybe !!!

i like the guy, but if BC can trade him and get some more capspace and a 2nd half first round, if possible a young guy who want minutes and is out there doing what coach want... that would be very nice.
and that put this organistion in a better situation.

i have a feeling about caldy, that is more than a call from coach casey to tell him:
run, shitty bastard, run and go attack, don't stay like that and wait their defense lock you out.

LOL.

I say we keep Calderon, if anything Barbosa should land us our 2nd 1st round draft pick. Although ive been rough on Calderon in the past, he likes it here in Toronto and he can mentor whoever becomes our pg of the future

I think that the Knicks & Lakers were great suggestions TBH. Both are need of solid PG play and would benefit from a true pass-first PG.

I'd be more concerned if Bryan wasn't open to trading Jose. Nobody is untouchable, especially the way we're trying to build towards the future.

I agree, but do the knicks have enough salary to send back or can we absorb it... and do they have anything we'd want?

Not sure.... Fields would be nice. But yeah, it would require some tinkering to work a deal.

I'd trade him for a mid-first, especially with our current roster; he's only slightly above average at distributing and we don't have an offense right now that features guys coming off screens and attacking the rim that could really benefit from a PG who can thread the needle.
