Sources: Mo Cheeks a candidate for Raptors coaching gig

Lawrence Frank and Dwane Casey are on the Toronto Raptors' list of coaching candidates, but sources say there is a strong third candidate: Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Maurice Cheeks.

The Raptors are not expected to make a decision on their coach until GM Bryan Colangelo returns from a scouting trip in Europe. They are also expected to wait until they can interview Mavericks assistant coach Casey, after the NBA Finals.

Cheeks, 54, has a career record of 284-286 as a head coach over six-plus seasons, splitting time between the Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers. He last coached the Sixers in 2008 before joining the Thunder under coach Scottie Brooks.

Cheeks also played 15 seasons, winning a championship with the Sixers in 1983 as their starting point guard.

Ahhh, nahh!

I'd prefer one of the other two.

MrClutch 06-09-2011 08:23 PM

he wouldnt be bad to have

Don Vito 06-09-2011 08:24 PM

No thanks.

I like Mo Cheeks.

Good dude, has the respect of players throughout the league and knows how to win.

I remember when that girl screwed up the national anthem before the game, he jumped right in and helped her finish it. Class act.

I'd just as soon have him as Frank.

I just remember him losing a lot the last time he was a head coach.

Well its been 2008 since he was a head coach. Maybe he has a new perspective now after being an assistant and seeing the league change and all.

In Philly, he did lose a fair amount. But he also had a tough situation personality wise. After Iverson was traded for Andre Miller, he got Philly into the playoffs. Iggy played the best ball of his career with Cheeks as his coach. Dalembert also emerged while coached by Cheeks. I like what he did with Philly's younger players after Iverson and Webber were out of the picture.

If I could pick anybody, he'd definitely not be high on my list. However, out of the coaches named so far in the rumours, I think he's as good - if not better - an option than the others.

For those who saw my report that Cheeks is in mix for Raps' head-coaching job. I suspect he's a candidate for Det, too, but don't know that.

I'd take him over Frank and Casey, but not by much.

fancylad 06-09-2011 08:56 PM

Good. Cheeks would actually be my top choice now. This is one rumour i hope has some legs to it.

It's funny, the one thing i remember Mo for the most is like gizzle mentioned, when he helped that little kid get through the anthem. I became a fan ever since.

So did Pat Riley....doesn't mean you're a bad coach.

DonMughal 06-09-2011 09:22 PM

Is he as good as a defensive expert than the others?

jeffb 06-09-2011 09:28 PM

I guess Doug Smith was wrong. Hmmmm, that's unusual.

Unless the information provided to him changed and this new report is based on NEW information.

That COULD'T happen though right? Things never change minute to minute right?

Jeez, I wish we can all watch you do your job and then sit back and say how we can do it better.

Oh calm down, didn't know you were such a defender of Dougie. Hell a lot worse has been said about him and this is what get upset over?
