Raptors Source: Raptors had a deal in place in the 2011 Draft

Yikes, how gross!

Quote:
Here's an interesting story told by an insider involved with one of the teams. In 2011, most everyone in the league thought the Cavs were leaning toward Lithuanian center Valanciunas with the No. 4 pick.

That included two teams behind the Cavs: Toronto at 5 and Detroit at 8. So much so, the teams had arranged a trade after they figured the 7-footer would go to the Cavs.

A source said the Pistons were going to trade the eighth pick and guard Ben Gordon to the Raptors for Toronto's No. 5 pick and guard Jose Calderon.

The Pistons were going to draft Tristan Thompson at 5, while Toronto would have taken Brandon Knight at 8.

The trade was called off when the Cavs passed on Valanciunas and selected Thompson at 4. The Raptors jumped on the Lithuanian center with the next pick. Both teams appear happy with the outcomes of both players.

I'm guessing BC really likes Ben Gordon?

Or he absolutely detests Calderon, which seems likely since he attempted or contemplated trading him at least 3-4 times before finally sending him packing. lol

Detests Calderon so much to add an extra year on the payroll and take a player who is even more useless, as well as move down 3 spots to get rid of him. yay BC

Take on the worse pick with the worse contract and move down 3 spots in the draft. And to think some Raptors fans still wanted to see him extended. Yuch.

Bet you wanted Rondo with that 1rst pick eh?

Its a draft man, who fucking knows who's gonna be good...another thread chalk full of hindsight wisdom.

well no... With the fifth pick you could've still grabbed the guy you wanted without trading down. Trading down would only mean you're getting something in positive value to make up for it, which clearly wasn't the case in a Gordon for Jose swap.

Who wouldn't have taken a Jose for Gordon swap regardless if picks were in there? Hell I would give them a pick to take Gordon.

You're talking about drafted players, while this article is about the swapping of picks and players. If Val wasn't there, why not just take Knight at 5? Why make an unnecessary trade for no reason but to cripple our cap even more? This isn't so much about hindsight on who to pick, it's about a GMs ability to make good and bad deals. Way to derail another thread.

So since you're here, please tell me the positives about the proposed trade, without going off topic, because I really would like to know how trading for a worse contract and worse draft pick is a good trade. And to top it off, the better contract we'd be giving up(Calderon) is a better player than the worse contract we get back(Gordon). Plus you're a Jose stan. So I don't understand your logic. Go on and explain your comment for once.

of hell I don'tknow Thriller, I am pretty ignorant to most of the more technical parts of NBA trades and all that shit. I wish I knew more but unless I was able to hear why that was on the table...if, IF it was, "sources" say a lot of things, I wouldn't really know Thriller.

What I wouldn't do is sit back like a know it all on a messageboad and bark about how much more I know about basketball than a professional two time award winning GM. You can shine shit up all you'd like, and you can post all these really big and shiny idea's bud, and you do, but that doesn't mean you have a clue so instead of playing the part of the badass here why not just appreciate that you have no clue what you would or wouldnt do if you were in a war room during a draft for an NBA team. So that said, do me a favor and stop trying to call me out for shit neither of us can truly know the answer to. Fact is, one of us aint claiming to be the fucking braniac of all things basketball...you on the other hand...well.....

i will give you this. Toronto needed a young PG, the guy in this discussion was suppose to be the safest bet in the draft. Ben Gordon was a fantastic shooter, something toronto BADLY needed at the 2. Simple enough dickhead, you may disagree, but the point is, it aint all that out to lunch.

Thanks for your typical response. The fans aren't allow to critique the topic at hand because we haven't walked in the managements shoes, and childish name calling to follow. Why even have message boards when the fans shouldn't be able to have an opinion on potential/completed moves because they haven't worked in a front office? How dare I say BC has done a horrific job, despite us not making the playoffs 5 straight seasons, when he has won 2 awards! The audacity!

Delete the message boards!

there is no way this is true, detroit had to pay charlotte a draft pick to get rid of gordon and it's not like it was a secret that they wanted to get rid of him.

maybe the supposed trade was JC for gordon and their pick, that sounds a lot more realistic.
