Exclamation Something to think about

Just read this post from dagger from the RealGM (accfan for those who remember him from back the old ESPN board days) and what alot of you don't realize is how little money we still have to work with (unless there are still more trades) this summer for about 3 to 4 positions that still remain.

Check out what he had to say:

Yes, a trade is theoretically possible (assets being Bargnani, Hump, AP, Joey, Moon, Kapono, future first rounders, and cap relief for the other team), but it not only has to make us better now, it also has to fit in next season's finances without incurring a tax hit. So parcelling our remaining expirings (AP, Moon, Joey) for equivalent money wouldn't bust the bank this year but would leave almost no room to manouevre next summer. So a trade of expirings would have to be really to our advantage. At the very least, the player coming back would have to be equal to or better than AP on the wing.

Moreover, if we did a 2-for-1 or 3-for-1, we have to leave ourselves even more room to round out the roster - or at least get to the 14 player minimum.

So the wise money says we're going to do very little in free agency. Delfino is probably gone. Forget giving anyone a full MLE.

There is no sign MLSE is going to pay luxury tax.

if we're worrying about maneuvering our cap for the following season now to avoid l.tax, you might as well realize that this team is not committed to winning. i understand arranging contracts to work with JO's expiring, but if we're gonna sit and wait on it, that's pathetic.

Exactly.

Why don't we just forfeit the next two seasons...

Yeaterday, Doug smith stated that the Raps had 5.7million to spend on MLE and around 2 million on top of that. I guess BC will have to get creative.

kapono will most definitely pay off this year. If smitch plays him, he will get open looks galore!

I was thinking the same thing. Assuming (and praying) both Bosh and O'Neal remain healthy, its going to free and open up alot of open looks for guys like Kapono, Parker and Calderon. As long as Kapono's shot can fall like it did against Orlando, we'll should definitely see a much improved Kapono next season.

You know if the NHL had a salary structure the same way the NBA does, MLSE would be paying out crazy cash and absorbing luxury taxes for the Leafs.

This might be helpful for people to understand. It's from a member at the RealGM and a pretty accurate breakdown assuming a few of his assumptions (see Jose & Garbo) fall into place.

I will update this thread when actual NBA values are released in early July, or IF trades happen and new players come in or existing exit.

And rightfully so. MLSE is a business.

Until the Raptors start generating anywhere near the same revenue as the Leafs, they're going to be 2nd tier to MLSE.

That's like expecting the Raptors to give as much money to Calderon as Bosh. Why would they do that when one generates significantly higher returns than the other?

We don't need to get ourselves into the luxury tax anyway, unless it's a can't miss situation. That's only going to limit our flexibility down the road when there will be alot more we can do with the money.

This summer is not a bad time to be poor.

Miami? He was waived by Miami. That's last place and everyone is in suits on the bench Miami. But Sam wouldn't give him a chance to do anything? You know what guys - he had every chance here.

the Raptors income from the NBA television rights would probably pay well more then the leafs entire salary cap. hockey's huge for mlse because it's canada, but the money is in the nba.
