Based on what I've seen Walker will probably succeed and have a career at least as good Nelson's because he also seems to have the 2 qualities that have served Nelson best so far.... Work ethic and Heart.

I'd be very surprised if he's not in the ROY race.

The other guy who I'm starting to think could have been special is Tristan Thompson. I think that he would have been an ideal running mate for Davis and Derozan and something about his personality tells me that he's the kind of player who's going to become a team leader... something that we're still looking for.

We'll see how things go.... Right now I just worry that it's 2006 all over again with BC telling us that "this is a pick for the future and we know that there are probably other players in the draft who are going to come in and contribute more right away".

Hope it's a different outcome this time.
Would you trade a #5 pick for Jameer Nelson? I wouldn't.

Would you trade JV for Jameer Nelson? I wouldn't.

Tristan Thompson might end up being a very good PF, but he plays the same position and a similar style to Ed Davis.

Its a natural reaction. If JV is good, he'll be happy.
In some of the interviews there was definitely some enthusiasm about the prospect of playing with Demar, and they were guys that knew him from the past. You're right about cutting him slack. It's a moment of immaturity from a kid basically, while hoping to match up with someone he knew when he was a kid for real. If he had been made happy by the pick, I could see a moment of immaturity turning into an extended period of immaturity, at least potentially. Now he has a chance to mature and become a pro with his head in the right place.

I think that Kemba will be Nelson at WORST.... I think that his ceiling is probably higher.

I'm thinking that Thompson is probably athletic enough to play the 3... which would have made a nice pairing up front with Davis. We'll see though.

i agree with the kemba thing, mainly because i don't think nelson is good at all, he's just an average PG, above average at best, in my eyes nelson is not even better than jose, especially a good jose

You may be right, but I'd caution about Thompson at the three. Guys always look more athletic in the college game..... I bet he's alot like Ed.

I feel sorry for Thompson in one way.....He is being put in a situation where the fans wanted to climb out from the rock they're under right away. They thought the draft picks would do it and they did not like the pick at #4. If there is one thing we know in Toronto, it's about what happens to a player when he is identified by the position he is picked at. I hope Cavs fans have some patience left and I hope they do not expect he and Kyrie to step in and carry them to the moon right now.

Kyrie could ask Jose how to carry gatorade to Moon.

I think it's a bit early to project Kemba's floor as Jameer Nelson. But have you considered my questions? Would you have traded the #5 pick for Nelson? Would you now trade JV for Nelson?

I haven't heard anyone suggest that Thompson would play the 3 until you suggested it. I think he would be too slow and it would take away from his core strengths. Besides, his biggest weakness is shooting and creating his own shot. If you play him with Davis you basically are giving up any mid-range or outside scoring from two forward positions, which makes things pretty easy for opposing defences. When you add Derozan's deficiencies at shooting the 3-ball, you basically give up any chance of stretching a defence. On defence, Thompson would struggle to cover many of the SF's in the NBA. I don't see it happening. It's no surprise that the Cavs traded their PF (Hickson) after drafting Thompson.

At worst? Those are some strong words and worthy of a thread bump in several years. Let's remember that Jameer was an all-star in 2009. That same year he was arguably as importing as D12 to lead the Magic to the finals, averaging 19 pts a game. The main concern with Nelson has been for him to stay healthy.

My issue with Kemba is that he is too small at SG and too much of a scorer to play at PG. He will probably have good stats since he will play for Charlotte but I'm skeptical of him being equally effective on a top 8 NBA team. Walker seems like a poor man's blend of Jason Terry and Ben Gordon. There's no way the Raptors should've picked him 5th overall.

I posted this in the "Live JV" thread too. Maybe those who are disappointed with the selection of JV should talk to a few other NBA GMs.

From the Draft Express Twitter feed.

Text from a NBA GM who is here in Riga: "Jonas Valanciunas is the steal of the draft, by far." Agree 100%. 16 rebounds in 1st half. #FIBAU19 about an hour ago

Jonas wins every one over with his style of play. He is extremely competitive. He's also definitely not a chucker, he's a tough post player, exactly what the Raptors need.

Anyone playing for the Raptors that has their doubts about Jonas will change their minds once they play with him.

The same can be said for any fans that haven't seen him play much.

One ESPN analyst said the country of Lithuania love their basketball. If that is true, if Lithuania loves their basketball as much Canada loves their hockey, you can see the passion and intensity in the kid. I hope the kid continues to get stronger, and brings the some passion and fire in the Raps uniform. However, the Patric Young dunk was nasty.

Without exaggeration Lithuanians are more fanatical about basketball then Canadians are about hockey... and we know how important hockey is in Canada. Watch this clip to get a better understanding of Lithuanian basketball:

- Population: 3,500,000
- 3 bronze Olympic medals, two 4th place finishes
- 3x Eurobasket Champions, 1 silver, 1 bronze
- 1 bronze in Fiba World Basketball
- Legends: Sabonis, Marčiulionis, Karnišovas, Kurtinaitis, Chomičius

Which dunk do you mean?

The one on 6'7" Skucas?

Or the one where he fumbled the entry pass and dunked almost completely uncontested on a falling backwards JV?

Or was it the throw down on the horribly out of position 6'2" PG Toni Katic of Croatia? Yeah, you celebrate that dunk Patric!

Sorry, but Patric Young is not long and athletic enough to be as unskilled as he is. NBA Comparison: Pops Mensah Bonsu.

thanks for the video.

yeah, gotta agree with you, although his body looks awesome (in a non-gay way!) none of those dunks looked massively impressive to me. And he really over-celebrated them!

Pops is faster and he can actually handle the ball in transition.

PY looks like a bum to me.

Young talked a lot of trash about Jonas, Said he is not a lottery pick... But in fact, he looks way worse than JV. He never scored big or dominated the boards in this championship, 9/7 is 2x worse what Jonas doing right now. And his team is not better than Lithuania, like he would play on a way better team and would have very small role, but no... Maybe he is defensive minded, but Jonas put 25 and then 30 playing against USA, Young, and most of his points were created by himself (team guards just can't run pick n roll), against constant double teaming.
And Young projected to be lottery pick next year? Irony... Maybe Young is young..? I mean he is way younger or smth? No, he is actually older than Jonas.
Hm...

Pops is way better than Young.

Young being in high school and Pops being an NBA vet is irrelevant when comparing the two.

I love sarcasm too!

Pops gets far too much love on this site in terms of skills being embellished, overrated, overstated..... he was a hustle guy that made you think he was doing more than he was on the court. He was not that good. I'd even suggest Dorsey is/was better than Pops.
