Raptors Solomon Alabi

Does anyone think this guy will ever contribute?

Quote:
Q: Howdy Doug. I was reading on a lesser blog/chat that the Raptors are unlikely to do any sort of trade involving Solomon Alabibecause they really like his defensive potential long-term, and that he was nursing some sort of leg injury last season that really held him back. I really want to believe because as you know, I dream of the day we can have a centre who rules the paint (and because Alabi seems like a great locker-room guy), but this view of Solo differs considerably from yours last season. Can you shed any light on the subject?

Mike D, Toronto

A: I’m not sure where you heard or read that but it runs quite counter to my reality. This coaching staff saw him as so raw they were afraid to let him scrimmage full out with teammates because his awkwardness created potential for freak injuries. Now, that said, he’s big and young and may very well develop but he is years and years and years away and I have no idea if a new staff will feel the same way.

Now, he was very popular in the locker room with his teammates but not in some “I’m an emerging leader” kind of way; more in a “Hey, Solo, don’t break anybody at practice today” kind of way.

Should have let him play against other teams...if he is that dangerous.

I really doubt he was that much of a liability to other players... I don't see him being an NBA player if he doesn't know how to control his own damn body.

Definitely exaggerated. Even if he doesn't have the proper talent, I doubt he'll take out his anger on his team.

I don't really see him being with this team long-term. Dorsey > Alabi.

The problem is Dorsey is too small.... he's not good enough to be a 6'5" C. At least Alabi has a chance to be a 7' handy stiff.

Dorsey is 6'8'' not 6'5''. Hes a hustler and has a huge body.. he was the only guy capable of guarding guys like Dwight Howard effectively. Call me when Alabi can guard D12.

He was drafted as a project with high upside. I can name a slew of centres who sucked in their first year and didn't play much.

Keep him, see if he can turn into even a back up C (he's got great size) and go from there.

Patience. Patience. Patience.

This is the issue when people fall in love with a 12th man.... Dorsey sucks. You make it sound like he shut down Dwight Howard. lol

Isnt Dorsey 6'7"?

Dorsey is a good bench play with no upside

Alabi has possible upside

What upside? To stand there like a pole? He is slow and has no upside. At least Dorsey is a hustler who never gives up.

Alabi has good jump shot & he shoots FTs pretty good plus he is 7'1"
I'm not sure if he will ever be good but we should at least see what he can do in his softmore season...

Why do you lol at that?

Wouldn't a guy who was a 2nd round pick and is a big body be a VALUABLE commodity? I mean look at Dallas with Haywood off the bench. Look at how badly Miami needs a 2nd big man who would be good off the bench.

The Spurs always needed a good back up, so did Detroit during their run. Glen Davis has been huge for Boston. I could go on.

It's amazing to be honest.

Another one.

Dorsey has at LEAST played in the league for a few years. Alabi hasn't.

Let the guy develop at least a bit. Learn the game now. What's a foul and what's not a foul and go from there.

Dorsey still manages to commit some really dumb, dumb fouls.

To say Alabi will turn into Glen Davis or Haywood is ridiculous.

He also managed to make some really nice plays.

It's always good to have at least ONE big body in the frontcourt who can't get pushed under the basket at will.

If we're losing Reggie this becomes even more of a concern.
