so, are we happy or frustrated

it's kind of funny that there's a general feeling that the fanbase is upset with the pick, but somehow most people are actually fine with it in their comments. So what better than a poll to judge our state of mind on this topic ...

Don Vito 06-24-2011 10:36 PM

Happy after doing more research and getting expert opinions, also after watching tape. Jonas is the best big in the draft IMO, he also addresses the teams' needs. Drafting a guy like Knight would be a piss poor move.

Someguy again 06-24-2011 10:37 PM

disappointed about jonas' buyout problems

JDMtors 06-24-2011 10:38 PM

I was disappointed to furstrated then how all our players got drafted. Now Im meh...

js12 06-24-2011 10:39 PM

Initially I was very disappointed with the pick since Brandon Knight was still on the board. I was said that I didn't mind Valanciunas as a player- he tries hard on defence and rebounding. I was down on how he needs to wait a year before coming. Patience hasn't always been my thing, but hopefully this pick is for the better of the franchise.

I think that most people are upset because of the European big man label. I know he isn't strong, but he has a high motor and chases the ball. I think Dwane Casey said it best: "I don't care if he's from Tibucktu, as long as he can play ball".

everything you said applied to barg when he was drafted and look where that's gotten us. knight might be a poor move but i think he has less bust potential than JV, only time will tell.

MrClutch 06-24-2011 11:04 PM

im glad with the pick now, we wont have an impact for next season but the 2012-13 season is when the raptors will begin to rise

RaptorsandBuckeye FaN 06-24-2011 11:09 PM

At first I was fine with it and now I'm still fine with it.

Toebee 06-24-2011 11:18 PM

Not disappointed at all about the pick. Knight went lower than most expected. Not being able to watch their workouts and speak to the players, I can't really say it was a good pick or a bad pick. Craptors need a big and point badly. They got one through the draft. I have faith in DC & BC so we will see what happens.

box92 06-24-2011 11:56 PM

im happy about this, its getting other people who are ignorant and just fat out say the raptors suck, without taking into consideration that we are rebuilding, what makes me angry

Blaze 06-25-2011 12:00 AM

I'm holding my judgement till I see this guy play, which is a year from now...

DocHoliday99 06-25-2011 12:11 AM

I'm happy, its the coaching I wanted to see addressed most. I'm more excited about Casey being here and seeing what he'll do. I also liked the pick...I think Jonas will surprise many

rapsmannn 06-25-2011 03:35 AM

i really like the idea in theory that we took the best player left on the board

also i like stashing a guy in europe during a lockout year

another thing it slows down the development of the team overall which means another crucial top pick which is needed considering the talent drain on this team, one more of developign demar into a offensive dynamo and overall player, and hopefully andrea geting a little better which he seems to take smalls steps every eyar

Raptorman 06-25-2011 09:45 AM

I am tired of not being a player in the "Real NBA" sweepstakes.

After a 20 win season, we have kept most of our players, added a draft pick we cant use, and hired yet another unproven coach that is going to learn on our dime.

What is there to look forward to this season or next? That Derozan gets good enough that a real team wants him?

We are a minor league team that feeds the rest of the league. I want to see that changed. TODAY.

PS. I checked "frustrated"

Carlito 06-25-2011 09:56 AM

I was less disappointed, but more confused. Hay, I have my views but guys doing this for a living should know more about these guys because they are watching them.

We need a young center for the future. If we can get a Vet thru FA, this will stablize our team and enable JV to be an NBA player. Time will tell ...

Currently ... I'm okay / happy ...

Well said. Needless to say I am frustrated. We needed a quick change and we got a potentially a good player who might be NBA ready only a few years from now.
I want to remind you all that it was BC who said on Bargs; ``it takes longer for big men to develop`` which means around 3-5 years from. To be honest, I don`t have the patience to wait, I don`t think he is gonna be so good that it`s worth the very long wait. I think he can be very good, but only in 4-5 years from now.

TS13 06-26-2011 11:53 AM

I can not believe what happened:confused2::confused2: Jona had to take Cleveland Cavaliers I can not understand why they left him :confused2::confused2:

Hate to break it to you, but there wasn't a single player in this draft that was going to make Toronto into a contender this year.... Patience is a necessity at this point, otherwise you're just wallowing in negativity.

True, not a contender but a better team for sure. Knowing there were names on the board like Knight and Walker and according to the Raps they are trying to find a C through FA, I don`t see the point of drafting Jonas.
I want the team to get better now because by the time Jonas will be the NBA ready player we all want him to be, the players we wanna keep may not gonna re-sign. We saw it with Carter, Bosh and if we don`t get better fast we may see it from DD, Amir and Ed. It`s a fact, no good players wanna play on a struggling team, knowing other teams want them, simple as that.

Carter re-signed twice actually. Bosh only once. McGrady didn't. I think that's all over-stated. You're right that they could have been immediately better, but this team is so far away from competing they needed longterm high-end talent.

'trane 06-26-2011 02:21 PM

could they really have been immediately better with walker or knight? we're talking 2 guards that still need a fair bit of work, and who would both be playing behind bayless and calderon. i don't see much immediate improvement from that. my hope was that drafting one of them would be a sign of trading jose and moving on from that era, but i didn't think we would be better in the sort run.

we'll be a bottom feeder next year regardless of who we drafted.

Bottom feeder? I don't know about that. I actually think the team has potential to be .500, but if not then we will secure another high draft pick.. in which case 2012 will look bright.

they do have that potential... but so does Milwaukee, Detroit, Indiana, New Jersey.... etc.

I'm not smokeing anything, I just think with the chemistry and new coach that we could be pretty good. We have some good players who are serious about winning. Sorry for seeing the glass half full. I guess because I'm a raptors fan I should see the glass half empty, like you? :tombstone:

we were awful, and so far we've added almost nothing. we can wait to see what we add in free agency, but with barbosa picking his option up we don't have much cash, and with a lockout looming it's hard to imagine the ownership will want to spend much. i can't imagine our players will develop enough for us to be much better. maybe we'll be 6th worst instead of 3rd worst...

js12 06-26-2011 02:56 PM

With the team as bad as it is, let's just say a shortened NBA season could do us Raptor fans a favour.

we also had alot of injuries... ill-timed.... and our young guys are going to be improving, not stagnant.... we could be a .500 team though it's not likely. I like his optimism.

baigs353 06-26-2011 03:02 PM

hello

MARTYNAS 06-26-2011 03:15 PM

Guys, sorry, but no way Raptors will be .500 team. I am not a psychic, but the one with unbiased opinion. Raptors was 3rd worst team in the NBA last season. How come they get good just like that, with no reason,? And don't forget all worst teams also improved. Minny got Rubio and Williams. CAVS got Irving, Thompson, and don't forget how many injuries CAVS had. An so on...

About Jonas. Rebuilding is long precess. Fans are impatient and thats understandable. But think for a sec. Raptors do not need quick change or get better right now. Whats the point? Teams like Lakers needs that, not bottom feeders.
You know what happens when you try to rebuild quick and chase for instant change? you sign a guy like Turkoglu... Yeah, Raptors tried the instant change thing, and it was total failure.

We might have the cash to pick up a significant piece, but I agree that it probably won't happen now. Just a hunch. Even if there is a season, I think the Raps might avoid spending, unless a wonderful opportunity presents itself. It might not be worth it to spend right now. Depends on the new cap situation.

Once the CBA is worked out, it's possible that the Raps could have close to $15 million to use on a couple of players, I think (I could be wrong). Jonas is not coming over next year, so I think his cap hold comes off the books. That means the Raps have about $45 million allocated to 10 guys (9 who can play, 'cause Kleiza is hurt). Colangelo will probably fill a few "end of the bench" and "practice roster" spots with really cheap contracts, which would only need to take up a few million, so the payroll would still be below $50 mill.

According to a couple of reports, the league is offering the players a $62 million cap. I can't see the players countering with something lower than that; it would obviosly be against their interests. So, assuming the Raps fill a couple of vacant roster spots with cheap players (which makes sense because there won't be minutes for them), B.C could then spend close to $15 mill going after a Center and SF.

It might end up really sucking that Barbossa picked up his option. Depending on how the CBA situation develops, the Raps might have had over $20 mill to spend on a Center and SF. In that type of situation, I could see Colangelo being motivated to make a move right now, because that's a lot of cap room. When you have that much money to use, there would have been some interesting options. Maybe he could have offered a frontloaded contract to an interesting RFA, like one of Denver's wings or Nene. I feel like we might be overpaying Barbossa at $7.6 mill. I'd much rather overpay (at the start of the contract) a young wing, like Afflalo or W.Chandler, who will grow with the club.

Damn you, Barbossaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Sorry but if you think were going to improve by nearly double the amount by adding nothing (pending free agency) just because of a coach? Theres nothing currently to be optimistic about.

Bill Haverchuck 06-26-2011 03:54 PM

If John Wall is healthy, Washington will probably improve a bit. He started last season with some nagging injuries that held him back a little bit.

Cleveland was playing better after Baron arrived. If the team is healthy, they will be deeper and more talented than last season.

Wing play was one of - if not the - biggest problem for Milwaukee last year. Salmons shit the bed big time after signing his new contract. And then Delfino got hurt after he started to pick up the slack. Also, they missed the offensive boost that Ridnour use to provide off the bench. The acquisition of Stephen Jackson and Udrih might really help the Bucks address those weaknesses. I could see them making the playoffs again.

Indiana is young, and picked up another decent piece in the offseason (Hill). Just based on internal improvement alone, I think they will be better. In addition to that, the Pacers cpotential cap space is a wild card.

New Jersey will have D-Will for a full season now. He'll make them better.

Detroit? Meh.

Bobcats? Too bad we can't play them 40 times next season, then maybe we would be .500.

LX 06-26-2011 07:55 PM

I think we're wonderfully positioned to go through a lockout rather painlessly. We're as good as any other team if we don't play any games.

Scully 06-26-2011 08:14 PM

A rookie wasen't going to make this team, even if we took Irving. I am still waiting to see what happens in the off season through trades and or free agency before I resign my self to complete frustration. Jonas has 2 -3 years before he was going to make a difference, It s probably a good thing I don't have to be in direct visual contact with his development. As long as some one is ushering him to the weight room and making him shoot free throws.

komot 06-26-2011 11:57 PM

on the fence until he becomes a boom/bust player, thats when the true emotions will come out.

Northern Neighbour 06-27-2011 12:34 PM

I like the pick, as I think JV has a great upside. I'm also a fan of Bayless, so I would like to see how he progresses with another season under his belt.

Carlos Danger 06-27-2011 01:35 PM

At first I was really frustrated, but now that I've given it a few days to sink in, I don't think there was a better choice then Jonas. I'm excited to get to watch him in the U-19 tournament in a few days, and hopefully the Euro tournament.

As long as he can stay healthy and put on about..15 pounds?? He should be good for next season, and Jonas alongside another top 10 draft choice next year should help us improve by a fair amount.

rbreezy68 06-28-2011 11:43 PM

at first i was disappointed , then i saw tapes of val, he's a true center, plays hard and can even shoot free throws, tyson chandler can't shoot, haywood can't shoot, so for a rebuild situation this is the best pick.
