Default So James Johnson...

What do we do with him now that he barely plays anymore?

If this continues for the rest of the season I wouldn't want him suddenly in the rotation in the playoffs because he won't be ready for that kind of intensity. What's especially crazy about all this is that Ross finally has a short leash so we're getting very little production out of our wings at this point, AND Hansbrough is still ahead of JJ in the rotation. I don't get it man. Have they asked Casey once what the hell is up? Trying to work DD back into playing shape isn't holding up as an excuse anymore.

I miss be missing something with all this complaining about JJ's playing time. He must be Kevin Durant.

Hansbrough has done a fantastic job in limited minutes. JJ needs to get back to providing the same. The funny thing is that Tyler was in the same spot last season. He was getting a lot of 3 minute games or outright DNPs. He came into this season with a very different mindset and fully accepting his role and he's been having a big impact in a good number of games. It's called good coaching. JJ will get it when he gets it. For now he's injured.

Fuck KD man. It goes far deeper than that. He's the heir apparent to Pape Sow.

You forgot how people thought he was better than Bosh? I can remember being in the acc and hearing fans express those sentiments.

They should have been ejected immediately. If not, I'd probably just remove myself if I heard someone say that.

The funny thing is the same sort of fans constantly booed James Johnson for taking a shot, and i don't mean a 3-point shot. If he took a shot he got booed. No - in fact he got booed when he merely considered taking a shot. How good is that? Pape was a legend while missing dunks spectacularly. We've come a long way. But the obsession over JJ harkens back to all that.

The weird thing is JJ got minutes even before Demar got hurt. So I don't know why he's getting benched lately

Okay, so looking through the media notes it appears that he was injured on the 30th. That only accounts for him getting a DNP against Brooklyn and Washington.

Going back through the last eight games before that we see...

Jan 16th: His last good game, which was against the Hawks, when the rest of the team played like crap and got destroyed. He had 17/6/3/1/2 in 26:30

And then...

Jan 18th vs. Pelicans: 11:00 with 0/4/1/0/0

Jan 19th @ Bucks: DNP-CD

Jan 21st @ Grizzlies: 7:45 with 0/1/0/0/1

Jan 23rd @ 76ers: 9:00 with 6/3/0/0/0

Jan 25th vs. Pistons: 3:00 with 0/0/0/0/0

Jan 27th @ Pacers: DNP-CD

Jan 28th vs. Kings: 7:00 2/3/1/1/0

I'm sorry, but a player doesn't go from being starter material over Vasquez (who has gotten the nod recently) without something happening that should make its way to the city media and the fans. Didn't he prove himself while DeMar was out enough to warrant consistent PT? Wasn't he the team's best defender by a considerable margin? Hasn't he clearly matured? Isn't he shooting above 60% from the field?!

It's not for nothing that barely three weeks ago Grange wrote this piece about him: Raptors' James Johnson maturing into role - Sportsnet.ca

So I'm still more than a bit baffled as to why we have to be playing these way-too-close games against mediocre teams when we could let JJ shred them in the post and clamp down on their wings instead of running a Lowry/Williams/Vasquez rotation all the time that still jacks far too many threes. Even with us getting back on the winning track lately, I don't see us pulling out any playoff games playing the style of basketball we're seeing.

I love what JJ has done for the Raptors this year.

But lately, the rotation change(starting Vasquez) and JJ's very own subpar play, especially on D, has reduced his minutes and given him a number of DNPs.

He appears to be in good mood. He has been cheering the team constantly off the bench and has been working very hard indicating that he understands and accepts his role with the team.

Why do Raptors fans obsess over him and trash GV and Ross all the time, I have no idea. All three are role players. Their play varies. Their skills are different and they fit in a different way. They are specialists.

the only thing worse than boneheaded coach, is fans trying find weirdest excuses for stupidity. there are plenty of those on this board. And it is sad.

He was not the team's best defender by any means. If that was the case I'd be just as miffed as anyone.

Excuse implies an issues, problem or bad results. Overall on the season and lately the results have been good, issues/problems were there with or without JJ. Lately, less issues, better results while JJ is on the bench. Defense has been excellent at times with JJ on the bench. JJ has been excellent at times. Lately, not really.

For whatever the reason, a good portion of the fan base is delusional and fixated on certain ideas. Last year it was the "WE NEED TO TANK, WE NEED TO GET OFF THE TREADMILL AND STOP BEING MEDIOCRE". The starting gun to that obsession was the article/essay on RealGM. It became league wide fan base obsession #1. Masai was smart and patient and lucky enough not to blow up the team, although he was close, and it turned out nice so far. The team is #2 in the conference after first 3 months of play.

The prime example of that "Treadmill team" were the Atlanta Hawks. In the play-offs for 7-8 straight years yet never getting anywhere. This year, they are the talk of the league, everyone's darling, example of how to build without a superstar etc..etc.. They made the jump. Now, everyone forgets how they were quick to dismiss the Hawks. Yet they've been doing the right thing all along. Being competitive and trying to make the right moves to get better. Sometimes you need time to come up with the right move. Sometimes you need some luck. But by being there and being competitive despite being without a real chance to get anywhere, you put yourself in the position to see what you need to do to get there. And this year, they just might have done that.

The Raptors are doing the right thing as well. But the fans are refusing to admit it and are impatient and needlessly obsessing over small details while ignoring the big picture. Fans see when JV is not in the game the last two minutes, refuse to see the 5 minutes he was there before that. Fans see the minutes but refuse to see JV's improvement this year. Fans get excited but lack the patience to see it through. So they start accusing, searching and inventing problems and issues.

JJ is an exciting player. He can do some pretty amazing stuff on the court on both ends. He can defend a lot of different guys, his help D is quite good/borderline amazing at times. But fans fall in love with the guy and fail to see his shortcomings. His lack of focus at times. Lack of consistent effort and getting caught in between on D. His gambling on D. His non-nonchalant passing. Pouting.

JJ is also a role player. He won't be anything more in the NBA. But he can be awesome at that. Lately, he hasn't been and that, combined with the rotation change, he has been the odd man out.

I'd love to see JJ start over GV. See how that works. How JJ responds. However, GV has done a solid job. DD has been amazing the last few games, bringing all around game. Last five games he is averaging 20.4 ppg, 6.2 rbpg, 5.6 apg, 1.2 stpg, 2 tovpg, 9 ftapg and shooting 45%. It has to do with playing in his natural SF spot, being surrounded by two aggressive and natural perimeter guys. Having the other team worry about Lowry as much as DD. etc..etc.. It has been a good fit lately. Fans refuse to see that. They see a bad shot or two by DD, refuse to see 10 rebounds and 7 assists against the Wizards.

So, as much as I'd love to see JJ start, I love what DD has been doing lately. And DD is a ever improving player, an all-star, a guy that can do a lot more than JJ ever could. If the price of dominating DD is JJ on the bench, I'll pay it, gladly.

actually the hamstring is only recent.. Demar has been back for 12 games now.. JJ's strained his hamstring during practice a few games ago and caused him to miss only 2 games.. so that isn't the reason for him being on the bench
