Rogers Sportsnet has given up the ball in the new NBA agreements negotiated with Canadian television networks.

Beginning next season, Sportsnet will be out as an NBA rights-holder. It will carry neither Toronto Raptors nor any other NBA games.

TSN and the CBC are expected to share the 12 Raptors games Sportsnet will lose.

The CBC will air between 15 and 20 games on Sunday afternoons, up from seven this season. TSN will increase its schedule to about 25 from 21.

The Score will continue to air a large number of Raptors games, about 30, and is expected to increase its non-Raptors game content.

Over the past two seasons, Sportsnet's Raptors schedule has contracted, because the team's owner, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, has insisted the club receive national distribution.

TSN, CBC, the Score and club-owned Raptors NBA TV are national networks. But Sportsnet, a regional service, had difficulty finding a window for the NBA team because of a commitment to NHL regional telecasts.

MLSE, which owns NBA rights in Canada as well as Raptors' rights, packaged the Raptors and non-Raptors games together.

Since Sportsnet couldn't fit a significant number of Raptors games into a national schedule, it also lost non-Raptors games, which, in the past, had been useful as prime-time content in the various regions.

It's a setback for other reasons.

Sportsnet has regional TV deals with five of the six Canadian NHL teams, excluding the Montreal Canadiens.

But without NBA games, Sportsnet will have little to offer, except hockey, during the winter months in terms of major-league programming.

In Ontario, Sportsnet airs 30 Toronto Maple Leafs games, but without the NBA games to supplement the Leafs, the winter programming in that region will be particularly thin.

The new NBA deals are expected to be announced in the next week or two.

More curling and poker for Sportsnet. Good riddance, give all the games to Raptors TV, at least Raptors Postup would always follow up on the same channel.

Sportsnet should really change their name already. They dont fully cover sports, they cover canadian based athletics and their name should be based on that.

I'm glad the score will get more non raptor games though, its fitting since they give the best coverage of all the networks, but I have LP so I dont care either way

no thanks.
I really hope the amount of games that are limited to Raptors TV are few and far between.

Firstly, not all fans have the channel (myself included), secondly i really don't think it's wise for a team who is still very much trying to obtain a national follwing to limit certain games to a "specialty" channel that most people have no desire to get.

at least they have premiership on saturdays though.

But yes... sportsnet/hockeynet is an absolute travesty to television. Not only is their programing pretty much unwatchable, but I also wish Mike Toth, Peter Loubardias (sp?), jim Lang, That "dude" guy and their brutal morning girls would just go away from TV outright.

at least they have premiership. i'll give them that.

Man I love always having an NBA game on one of the four Sportsnets.

Assholes!

I don't think they they have LP for ExpressVu. I'm going to have to convince the chick to switch back to Cogeco.

And Fancy, it's only like a $1.50/month for the Raps channel. A worthwhile investment indeed.

RapsTV is one of the best buys i've made... with the raps games they show and the league games... its one of my favorite channels.

Sportsnet is a complete joke.
worst broadcast people, worst shows, worst everything....

The Score is always better than SNET anyways. Sid and Tim ALWAYS lead with a Raptors game as opposed to SNET and TSN, who would always lead with a hockey story.

Although I do agree with ACIE, it'll be hard now without at least one of the four stations showing a basketball game.

SWAN its like 7 bucks more... i was pissed when i found that out too, but i decided to just pay the extra 7 bucks... its worth it... i just kinda rounded it down to like .25 cents a day for the month. and after realizing that was the cost, i thought what the hell, fuck you rogers, take my money.
its a great investment... rapstv rocks and i like tsn hd.

its 7 bucks and you get about 7 HD channels (including TSNHD and RAPSTV HD), the other channels i cant remember what they are... i think one of them is HDNET - thats Mark Cuban's HD channel, it shows lotsa MMA fighting.

i hated the fact that i had to pay the extra money, but its worth the money... the amount of NBA games that Raps tv plays is awesome... every night they play at least one league game.

That's it exactly. They're not Sportsnet, they're like the HoserSportsNet.

Except a lot of us cannucks also like bball, so it's sad to see that they can't find a place for it on TV. No wonder Vancouver folded (only to go to an equally small US market); for whatever reason bball doesn't capture the national attention.

I hear ya but Raps TV is $2.50 and the best part is that games on Raps TV have Jack Armstrong instead of Leo Rautins as the color guy, that's enough reason for me to root for Raps TV getting all the games.

But you do have a point about the game being on a specialty channel which isn't always accessible to the casual fan.
