Default Smith: On Turkoglu

From his Blog

Quote:
Thereís apparently some measure of consternation out there about Hedo Turkogluís health over in Poland.

Well, I have it on great authority Ė top of the food chain, actually Ė that his ankle is not an issue but heís got some minor soreness in one of his knees thatís causing some issues with his mobility.

No one connected with the Raptors is concerned, itís probably just a result of a lot of games in a lot of days and not a lot of rest time.

They donít expect any lingering issues once camp begins in a couple of weeks; by that time, heíll have some time off and the grind of the NBA season, while substantial, isnít nearly as bad as the grind of five games in five days at an international event.

The trouble with this EuroBasket is that it finishes so close to the start of camp so there wonít be as much downtime as there has been in other years but, still, thereís not any angst among the big Raptors brass.

Besides, itís not as if Turkoglu uses shocking athleticism to get his job done anyway.

I'm getting tired of paying people millions of dollars and having them get hurt doing their sidejobs for free.

And it begins.
If it was a canadian on the Raptors playing for Canada, would you still object?

Personally, I don't give a rat's ass about international basketball, so I would definitely object to a valuable Canadian Raptor playing for Team Canada.

Yes.
its bullshit if you ask me...
I didnt give a crap if Nash played or not and he wasnt even on the raps.
I actually respected and understood his reasons for not participating.... he wanted to be healthy for his real job... you know the job that pays him millions of dollars to perform at a healthy level.

so i guess you wanted Jose to play this summer for Spain right? gimme a break.

I agree, it seems way too risky, but i guess the NBA is trying to keep the flow of players open to entice "stars" like Rubio coming here... i wonder how long it will be before the NCAA starts to open a branch office in Belgium to stem the flow of Euro players to the NBA...

+1

This is what I was complaining about on the weekend. - Click here

Enough is enough, the league has to step in and do something about it. Do these pointless tournaments every couple years instead of annually. We're paying their salaries, not their respective countries.

That's completely irrelevant. SWAN mentioned the Canadian basketball player scenario because it's applicable to us, cause, you know, we live in Canada.

THIS IS FUCKEN BULLSHIT. I cant fucken believe this is actually happening, this idot is 30, went all the way to the finals, now is playing international, and then when it comes time for him to earn his pay here he is going to be 80% or on the DNP list because of injury

Thank you.

My point was we've had this debate over an over again and it's been illustrated over and over again that in other countries the national program is more important so until the nba contracts start forbidding international play it's a useless argument.

how the hell is it irrelevant?
yes or no, Zachus, did you want Jose to play for Spain over the summer?
i'm guessing you would say NO.

Do you want Nash to play for team Canada, you know, the country we live in.
yes or no?
if you say yes you are a hypocrite.

Again, I always bring up hockey.

I'm curious, how many of us would complain if the Pittsburgh Penguins said no to Sidney Crosby to play for the Canadian team? Or Martin Brodeur? Or Luongo? I can go on, but you get the point.

Canadians would be up in arms.

Serving and representing your country always, always comes first and foremost ahead of professional obligations. We applaud and respect men who did it under other circumstances, yet we say no here because we have our own selfish reasons. A player is just as likely to hurt himself in a pick up game as he is in a professional tournament. Unless, you tell a player that he can't play ANY basketball or whatever during the summer/off season then you'll always run this risk.

Oh and why is it acceptable for players to play in the summer league? Can't they get hurt there as well? You never know, that prized rookie could/can hurt themselves real bad and screw up the future of the team. But that's accepted?

Where does the line get drawn?

Yes, but that theory is about as irrelevant as our Canadian National program is.

You guys take way too much ownership over the people you worship on television.

None of you would DARE tell another man, in a civil conversation, to his face that he shouldn't represent his country in a sport if he felt he needed to.

It's none of your business. As for the Pro team, tough shit, work that into your individual contracts if it's an issue, but no league has that right, period.

You guys are losing sight of a few basic facts, and you can't.

No I like it when a guy blows his ankle offseason...hell no. Would I tell a guy I didn't respect his decision to play...fuck no.

Here's what has always boggled me. How do you suggest a Basketball player prepare for BASKETBALL in the offseason if not by playing basketball.

Fuck, Oden blew out his knee STANDING UP IN BETWEEN GAMES ON HIS PS3. Do we start tossing in clauses to keep players from playing XBOX now?

You don't own a player, you own his services. Thats it.

Seeing how how he wrapped his knees, and hearing of the soreness I'm guessing that it's a case of tendonitis. I just hope that he is able to rest them enough to make it a non-issue.
