Default Smith: Teams Would Love To Have Bargnani

I think he has a future in the league and may blossom into a great player. However, I really don't think it will be with this team. Of course hindsight is 20-20 and no one knew Roy would be the superstar he is, but he's the "type" of play I see fitting on the current roster. So my question is two-fold: (i) is Bargnani a trade asset at this point; and, (ii) are there any young players out there who might fit the "type" we need? [Don't get me wrong, if AB could consistently do 14-7 off the bench, I would keep him in a heartbeat.]

Stephen J, Toronto

A: Yes, he is a trade asset. Youd be surprised as the number of scouts who tell me their team would love to have Bargnani. Just about every coach we talk to speaks highly of him and is intrigued by what he can offer.

So if Bryan is ready to give up on him and dont think he is but I think hes closer than hes ever been to cutting his No. 1 pick loose hell have takers.

hmmmm, no wonder BC is so reluctant to pull the trigger.
makes sense, if alot of teams are high on bargs, he doesnt feel the need to be desperate, and is hopefully waiting for the right deal.
or not.

Look at teams that need a PF. Hell, look what Milwaukee got for Yi. Bargs has a higher upside (I hope) than Yi does. I think the market is there, but if we deal him, how much weaker does our bench become?

Yet again, Doug Smith delivers in bright vague color!!

What i dont get, is if ppl are saying nice things, why cant you name the ppl?? They arent saying they are making moves for him, just saying, he would be nice to have.... yet its a big secret?? Or are they just being nice, because Doug talks to them when they are in town for the most part and they dont wanna be like, that kid flat out sucks and BC is a moron?? o well w/e

these "people" are usually not supposed to say these things to the media, and only do it because they trust someone like Doug to keep their name secret ...

you can call doug many things, but I never got the impression that he's the lying type.

as far as bargnani, as claudius said - look at what Yi got for the Bucks, and Andreea has more tools than Yi, who is having a bad year, despite playing with a pg like harris who makes everybody's life easy.

Believe it or not, Bargnani reminds me a bit of Darius Miles, or Jonathan Bender. Everyone sees the talent, the big problem is putting the pieces together, and I'm starting to doubt Bargnani will ever do it, much like those guys.

the secret to raps success is playing 6 ppl, throwing Bargs into the lineup since he disappears half the time anyways

or put in the executioner to quietly... execute lol

There is no doubt there is a market for Bargnani. I am sure there are more than a few teams that do not have an All Star Player playing as 4 spot and would be willing to give Bargnani a shot. I have held the opinion for a long time that Bargnani thinks he is a natural 4 and could actually be productive somewhere else playing at that position on a consistent basis.

I don't buy into the big difference between the 4 and the 5 in today's NBA, and if he's so in love with the idea of being a natural 4, then how does playing behind the arc make any sense in that regard?

The guy needs to feel like he belongs. When he hit that shot to win the game against the Clippers (or was it Portland?) two years ago, you could see the relief on his face, like he knew he could be a player in the NBA. He doesn't need to start games, but he does need a bigger role than he has now, with some chances to make the big plays in the clutch, like he did two seasons ago. I think he earned that right with his play early in the season, and since the Denver game - in which he looked very ready and focused - he's just been given Triano's standard minutes in the regular rotation. And he doesn't look like he gives a fuck anymore, just like anybody who feels they can contribute might feel when they get squeezed into a very limited role, as though there really isn't much of a place for him on this team.

If Colangelo or the fans don't lose patience with him, he's going to lose patience with this team. Right now it's a lose/lose scenario, and considering what we saw from him not so long ago, I think that's outrageous. Just one more WTF to add to this franchise's current history.

I know teams would like to have him. He is a number 1 pick and as long as he doesn't fail on 2-3 teams he isn't labeled a "total" bust

I think the raw talent is definitely there. But he needs more one-on-one coaching, preferably with a big's coach. Between O'Neal and Bosh, he's never going to get into a groove.

If his stock is high, I would definitely trade him. He's just not working here.

Yeah, I rather get rid of him now while his stock is relatively high before the team ends up getting less than Denver did for Skita.

actually it's a very big deal when a coach comments on another team's player, and even if it's a harmless comment, the league can still call it tampering.

He had a good game today lets trade him while he's hot.

Smith thought D Harris shouldn't be in the All Star game, it should be Rondo and Calderon, so take what he says with a grain of salt

Interesting point. I have to think about that one...is there really that big of a difference between a 4 and 5 in todays' NBA? I think I'm with you...but not sure yet.

Yes, there's a huge difference. All you have to do is watch Bosh try to play the 5, and you'll see how badly he struggles at it (defensively).
