I really hope we can sign Pops this summer. He'd be huge part of this team for years to come if we lock him up.

As regulars know, I’m all for keeping him – at a reasonable cost – next season and I found out last night that there’s another twist to his contract that might make that possible.

Among the more arcane parts of the CBA as it relates to the cap and impending free agents is a clause that says guys like Pops, signed until the end of this season, are restricted free agents as long as the Raptors make him a qualifying offer, which I’m sure they will.

So no matter what kind of sniffs he gets out there, and he will get more than a few, Bryan will have the chance to match an offer and keep the fan favourite.

And the more I think about it, a frontcourt rotation of Bosh, Bargnani, Pops and Hump sounds pretty good.

I am ok with trying Pops again next year; I am not particularly excited about the prospect of a frontcourt with Pops and Hump being our two big men off the bench. Alas, there are other areas that more pressing....

I dont mind us having both Pops and Humps, it creates more depth, but Brian better realize a backup center is NECESSARY for this team going forward too.

we can't have a backup center beyond hump (at least not someone better than voskhul). We have much more pressing priorities in the backcourt - assuming we resign marion. With the falling cap, money will be very tight, and we all forgot about the draft pick in our cap projections after the oneal trade - that cuts another ~2 millions from our budget I think ...

I think since its more than likely stubborn BC keeps both Bosh and Bargs, if Bosh has to play a lot of center minutes we're gonna be back in the same position we have been defensively. I really hope Rasho takes a paycut and comes back, hes a top 5 backup C in the NBA easy.

I just hope that other teams don't try to f**k us by driving the price up for him and offering him a contract that we have to top... that would suck.

If we lose both Marion AND Pops it'll be a blow to our team though.... I understand that we can't overpay but we need one of those guys.

You're oversimplifying the process. Nobody in this economy is going to give the guy crazy money because he's not worth it. He might receive offers but they're going to be for what he's worth and that will give BC an option to keep him or not.

A team can't offer him crazy money just to sabotage us because they have to honour that contract if BC declines to match. Think of the Mo Pete scenario a few years back...we matched but it was a fair contract because the teams both wanted him legitimately and therefore were offering reasonable money.

If someone wants to Adonal Foyle the guy that's their problem, but 99% of the time he'll be offered reasonable money.

Lol... I'm not suggesting that some team is going to offer him $8M/yr just to try and screw us... I was thinking more along the lines of a team offering him $3-3.5 and making us REALLY think hard about whether we want to match or not... whereas before we prob. could have had him back for $1M.

Theyre not the only athletic guys in the league, and there are guys who can do more than just provide energy and rebound like them. Marions obviously really good on defence too but again, there are other guys that can do what he does and more especially on the offence where hes just deplorable in the halfcourt. If theres a choice to bring him back for 8-10 mil or let him go you let him go no questions asked. And same with Pops if he wants over 3 mil.

I would love to have Pops back. He is an energy guy and is exactly what we need coming of the bench for this team

I agree with the Pops part. With Marion it all depends on whether Marion is precisely the guy they want or not. If he is then they might very well overpay him, although I'd guess they'd look at closer to 8mill than 10. If he simply is here for the expiring contract, and they want to use the money for another player they know for certain they want, then they probably won't even look at what he is asking.
