Post Smith: Raptors big man Andrea Bargnani fully recovered from leg injury

Via thestar.com

Quote:
Andrea Bargnani is rested and finally healthy, still bitterly disappointed with how the last Raptor season unfolded and under no illusions about what awaits him this summer.

“Work,” the 7-foot forward said. “Lots of work. Getting better.”

Bargnani remains confounded by a season that could have been his best but instead turned into his worst. He was a like a re-born big man at times, aggressive on defence and as effective as usual on offence before losing more than half of the abbreviated season to a series of left calf injuries.

He has been doing rehab and training, getting back to normal in Toronto, since the season ended (“I’ve been around the city, I have a few friends here, I really enjoy Toronto,” he said) and he’s back to 100 per cent.

“No more treatment to do,” he said. “It’s good to be 100 per cent again so I can start to work this summer.”

The enthusiasm in Bargnani’s voice is palpable in a short telephone conversation. He talks about almost constant contact with Raptors director sports science Alex McKechnie to keep his training regimen going and a constant dialogue with head coach Dwane Casey.

There is disappointment when Bargnani talks about last season; it dissipates quickly when the conversation switches to next year.

“The feelings for last year are the same but I am really positive about next season, I wish we could start tomorrow,” he said.

If he can fit it into his schedule — and there are a few tugs on his time back in his homeland — the Italian hopes to at least make an appearance at a mini-camp the Raptors will hold for free agents in Las Vegas before the team’s July appearance at the summer league.

Bargnani, if he goes, will join a host of Raptors veterans who will get some individual workouts in with members of the team’s coaching and training staffs, a key component to an off-season program the franchise was robbed of a year ago thanks to the prolonged NBA lockout.

It will be a good leg up on next fall’s training camp, the first tine Casey will have a full month before the season to work with the team.

It remains to be seen, of course, who might be on that team. Toronto will get an idea of its draft prospects after Wednesday’s lottery, general manager Bryan Colangelo could be active in July’s free agent market and trade talks are sure to heat up.

Bargnani isn’t about to suggest what kind of specific improvements he wants to see.

“I’m just glad that’s not my job,” he said. “I don’t think about it; everybody has to trust and have confidence in Bryan.”

And Colangelo can work some magic this summer like he did on his first year on the job — when he added nine new faces and saw the team’s win total leap from 27 one year to 47 the next — Bargnani can spend next spring doing something more than working out and hanging with friends.

“I watch the playoffs, it’s been a long time and I’m always reminded of what it was like,” he said. “I’m reminded every day of what a great feeling that is and I want it again.”

Well it would seem as all the other darlings (Derozan???) are talking bout practice....Bargnani is actually in town, with the super trainer, practicing.

Seems to me a funny thing that the players talk about how happy they are that that dude got hired, and from what I see (totally could be wrong, hope I am) Bargnani is the only guy taking advantage of having him in the offseason.

If Bargs can play next season like he did the first 13 then I would be really happy, along with the rest of us!

Good to know he will be with Casey a lot.. This season was bound to be an injury prone one with the condensed sched. Can't wait for the next!

i find it funny how its only 13 games that he played well, i wonder were the toronto media went in Bargnani last 7 games before he got injured again, he played well, cleary it took him time to get back in shape, timing and shooting back but once he did he looked pretty good

i'm confident that he'll bring his game again this following year, what worries me is that our roster will be full of young players, two rookies, derozan, ed davis, all core parts of the future of the team, don't know if a team can rely on such young players to make a difference and make the playoffs

i guess we'll have to wait and see how free agency pans out, experience is something bc has to address, not the kind that sits on the bench and gives mean faces to players that play but ones who can play and help win games,

First couple of years: He's developping
Next couple of years: Bosh is stealing all the touches and rebounds
Next couple of years: He has a different role, he's learning how to be option #1
Last Year: Injury, but boy he did play like a franchise player for those 13 games, nevermind the 18 games after the injury he shot .392 from the field and grabbed 4.9 rebound per game.
What excuse for next year.

Yeah, i kind of agree with this. It's always something with him. He can't seem to put one full impressive season together and there's always a reason why. I had given up on him then those 13 games teased us all. Now i wonder if he can come back next season and play like that for a full season and stay healthy. There shouldn't be this many doubts about a player going into his 7th season at nearly 27yrs old, especially a #1 pick.

I agree that it would be best to trade him and move on, however, your using the 18 games is somewhat ingenuous - it was really 11 games in which he shot just terribly after his injury, and then for the final 7 games he returned to a very good level (not quite the level of his 13 games earlier, as it was lacking the rebounding) but still very good. In those final 7 games, he had a .595 TS%, a .523 eFG%, and a PER of 24.5 - the TS% and PER were significantly better than his 13 game stretch. His rebounding was (and is) never going to be good, but that's no surprise.

People lumping in his the rest of his season together clearly didn't see just how AWFUL he was when he was coming back from injury, and how much that skews his season statistics. For the first 11 games back, he shot a .443 TS%, a .357 eFG%, and a PER of 9.2. He was truly awful, and he actually returned to a better form than his 13 game stretch (offensively) in those final 7 games. Ideally, if he doesn't get injured again for the end of the year, those 11 games could have been more of a blip than a season defining injury recovery.

Give any decent shooter a starting role no matter what, preferred match ups on D and disregard his lack of effort, and I can assure you he can put as good numbers for 13 games a season.
I'm hoping that 100% healthy message gets through to the potential gamblers.
