Smith: Are the Raps shedding the soft label?

Quote:

The little contretemps between James Johnson and Joey Graham – which was an absolute “much ado about nothing” thing as the guy once wrote – got me to thinking.

Is this still a “soft” team?

I don’t think so, I thought they have had had a bit of an undeserved reputation in the past but this group does seem to play hard and, when necessary, a bit physical.

That said, the flagrant foul on Johnson was just the fourth by a Raptor this season.

The others? Two by Jerryd and one by – ta-da! – David Andersen.

Do you think that Joey Graham knew James Jones is like some sixth degree black belt when he kind of tried to get at him after a flagrant foul?

I’m thinking not.

Of course, everyone made sure there were like seven guys in between the would-be combatants because that’s what they do when alleged “rough stuff” starts in the NBA.

That was awesome last night. Joey makes me smile..he acts all tough and entitled...I'm sure he is a tough guy but he's still a scrub. He'd have gotten his a$$ handed to him by JJ. :yeah:

Why he calling him "James Jones"

RAPMAN 04-07-2011 10:33 AM

The team is still soft. However having the "dirtiest NBA player" voted by players does help remove the image. Also James Johnson and Bayless bring the right attitude. Even Amir Johnson stood up against Garnett and Perkins this year. BC tried to bring some grit with Matt Barnes and Tyson Chandler. I think BC has changed his ways.

maybe...but we're definitely not shedding the "shit" label

Well we'll shit now, but later on maybe not. I don't know, would you want to be called soft or shit?

This team is more aggressive now and I don't think they're soft. They're fighting for possessions and getting after it when games get rough. Having Amir, Ed, Reggie, and Bayless here set the tone of aggressiveness. Hell even DD.

defensively they're mostly soft..... 4 flagrants all year and one by David Anderson. I bet we give up more and ones than most teams too.

Well played, sir.

The main we lost to Cleveland, and why three other teams have lost to them in the last two weeks, is because they are playing a tough, and very physical style. Hollins borders on being out of control at times, and they all make sure to get in the way and bang a few bodies. And they do so consistently. I don't see that at all with Toronto. I see the potential with the right guys. There have been some nice hard fouls here and there all season. But it's not something that they all have in mind on every possession.

A little of that, a little of B-Dizzle, and a little bit of late season hangover in the NBA (IMHO).

Who plays soft on the Raptors besides Bargnani? Even Julian Wright and Joey Dorsey are not soft.

Remember when we were a soft three point shooting team? And now we have absolutley no shooters.

I sure miss guys like AP...:sigh:
